Chapter 1

Alana

The wind didn't howl or whip as it always seemed to in thrillers. Instead it gushed past her with the consistency of gelatin, playfully dancing with the back of her shirt as it passed her. It seemed to mock her, that it should be allowed to dance in the darkness while she was forced to sit in the dank crevice between the dumpster and the alley wall.
"Ala-a-na," the deep, cruel voice taunted, stretching the syllables of her name into a twisted joke, "come out, little duck."
She gripped the gun as she heard the voice's owner marching into the alley. Griffin's last words to her slunk into her mind. Clear your mind, don't let your emotions get in the way of what you need to do. Alana took a shaky, inaudible breath, just enough to fill her lungs with the air required to complete the gruesome task ahead.
The foot-steps grew closer. Their splashes in the damp alley sent projectiles of muck towards her. He was less than a yard away.
"Alana, you're a very clever girl," The voice said, making her skin crawl, "It's too bad I have to kill you."
The speaker's feet were visible now from her spot behind the rusted green bin. She would have one shot.
     Three.
     Two.
     One.

She jumped up and pointed the gun towards her sizable target.

     Bang.
