After They Chase You

Chapter one

“I’m not the biggest fan …” I admitted, looking at him for his reaction as I put another pickle slice in my mouth and leaned against the wall. I was at my mother’s house for the weekend and her friend, Claire, was picking up some recording equipment she left, and brought someone, who looked about my age. I didn’t know his name or his relation to Claire. I assumed it was her cousin or nephew or something, since I was aware she had no children.
“Hm...” he grunted his mouth full of chips. “I must admit I’m surprised.” He said after swallowing. I noticed his accent straight away. It was Irish, I thought, but I wasn’t completely aware of the sounds of most accents, other than the ones you hear here in the states, like southern, Boston, etc.
“So, where are ya from?” I asked, sliding my foot in and out of my shoe nervously. I had to admit, he was cute, and it was making me nervous. He had blonde hair, a silver dog tag, stunning blue eyes, and a tight polo shirt that fit snuggly on his flat stomach. Everything about him made me nervous.
He gave me a confused look, which then turned into a more relieved look. “I was raised in London.” I nodded, realizing his accent was English.
“That’s cool…” I said, finding my gaze fixed on the floor, still playing with my flip flop using my feet.
He nodded, looking at my garage door. I could tell he was waiting for Claire to finish inside so they could leave. Thank you mom, for leaving me alone with a complete stranger in my garage with nothing but pickles, chips, celery, and carrots. I suddenly felt really awkward and insecure. I crossed my arms over my stomach and pursed my lips as I looked down. He must have noticed because he cleared his throat and said something I’d never forget.
“Why don’t you look me in the eye?” He asked softly, the tone of my voice assuring me he didn’t mean it in a rude way.
“I… I don’t know…” I said nervously, still looking down.
“Want to know a secret?” He asked, lifting my head up slightly with his pointer finger under my chin.
He caught my gaze and our eyes met. I nervously played with my hand behind my back.
“One day, girls like you are going to be asking for my autograph...”
I was confused… what’d he mean when he said ‘Girls like me’ and why would somebody want his autograph?
