By Amna Tahir “Come do the dishes Kathy!” My wicked step-dad yelled at me as he pounded on my door. I jumped up quickly hiding my phone underneath my excuse of a bed and opened my bedroom door facing my step-dad. “I got it.” I muttered to him as I walked to the kitchen which wasn’t very big but it was enough. Today I was going shooting with my best friend Sky but my parents weren’t fond of him so I had to keep it a secret. I finished doing the dishes quickly running upstairs and changing into jeans and a T-shirt. “Kathy do the laundry and help your mother with the plants!” He shouted at me and I huffed. I was already late. I sprinted downstairs to the basement and shoved the clothes in the washer after organizing it into colors and black. Then I ran over to the backyard and helped my mom quickly but not too quickly so she wouldn't get suspicious. “Kathy! Come back here!” My mom shouted ruining my happiness once again. I walked over to her with a huge fake smile. She inspected my facial expressions for a good 5 minutes as I miserably stood there. “Okay you can go. But come back down for din--” Before she was done I ran upstairs throwing on the first thing I saw. Then I opened the window carefully because it made a lot of noise due to the fact it was very rusty. It squealed and I slammed it open quickly I snuck out my window and landed on some bushes but thankfully my window was in the front yard and not in the back. I heard someone coming and I quickly shoved my window closed and ran across the street aware of cars around me. I ran across the street and kept running until I reached his house. I rang the doorbell and panted trying to catch my breath as he opened up. “Come on in.” He said eagerly and I sat on his black leather couch inhaling the wonderful smell of cookies. Sky and his brother came out of the kitchen holding a plate with a batch of freshly made cookies and a glass of milk. I thanked them and started to scoff them down. We all knew how much I loved cookies and their maid Olivia loved making them so it was a win-win situation. I came to Sky’s house mostly in my free time and mostly when ever I could. I tried my best not to get caught even though I was really close to sometimes with my nosy Step-dad. he needed to mind his own business like I was 17 I could take care of myself. I know the only real reason he wanted to marry my mother was because she was beautiful. Even at 30 she rocked it, she made young lads fall to their knees with one wink. I wish I had somewhat inherited her good looks but I got them mostly from my dad except my nose which I got from my mother. I really missed my dad. He passed away when I was 8. I remember when we used to go to the park and he used to push me high on the swing. When I was little I thought I could fly. “Come on let’s go to the car Tristan!” Sky shouted excitedly at his older brother tugging his arm hard making him fly forwards but he caught himself before he fell. I shook my head to clear the thoughts away because well I had enough time to mourn so I had to move on. I got up and walked out to their car which was a Honda but I loved it all the same. It brought back a lot of memories because my dad used to own this car but when my step-dad came into the picture he wanted everything that reminded my mom of dad to be gone. He sold the car which Tristan bought because he knew how mush it meant to me. We were going to move but my mom convinced my step-dad to stay. I’m glad he agreed because I would be really sad if I had to leave Sky and Tristan because well they were like a second family to me. They meant so much. I felt arms wrap around my waist. I knew it was Sky right away because after all he was my boyfriend. We were planning to get married soon because we loved each other and we settled that already. He had already proposed and I was 2 weeks pregnant but no one except Tristan and Sky knew which they supported me with. I was planning on moving out as soon as I turned 18 because then my parents didn’t own me and I was my own person. I knew Sky was the one after he saved me that day. “Come on Kathy let’s go.” Sky called out from the car and I made my way inside the car hearing the music playing right away. The song was Dead Bite by Hollywood Undead. I loved them so much. I started singing along and I heard Sky and Tristan’s laughter as it echoed off the car walls. But soon enough they joined me and we all laughed together. My eyes met Sky’s and I almost melted there. He had this effect on me even though we’d been together for almost 4 years. “We’re here!!” I shouted jumping out of the car and waited for Sky and his brother to come out and instantaneously they did, big bright smiles on their face. We went to the office to get hooked up with bullet proof vests and so they could set up the field. Sky didn’t wear a bullet proof vest which got me terrified. But he told me he was going to be fine. Tristan didn’t wear one either, they wanted to take risks knowing well enough that nothing was going to happen. They laughed at me and called me a worry-wart. So I gave my bullet-proof back and decided to take a risk. I had this bubbly feeling in my stomach that something horrible was about to happen but I pushed the feeling aside and decided to live a little, be a rebel. When the person came to give us the guns I let out a loud gasp immediately and slapped a hand to my mouth but it was too late. “Hello, Kathy how are you?” Asked my ex boyfriend Josh Carson. He was my ex for a reason. We dated when I was 12. I was very naive so I couldn’t really tell the difference between a good boyfriend and a bad one. He was my first date, kiss and well hug I guess. He was a very nice boy until he started to be over-protective and mean. It all started when I met Sky. Josh said that Sky only wanted to be my friend so he could steal me away as his and I believed Josh. Some time later Sky became my best friend and Josh became jealous of that so he wouldn’t let me hang out with him anywhere even at school. I hated it but I never mentioned it. Then one day I caught Josh making out with Stacy, the school’s mean popular girl. I was devastated but Sky was there to pick up the pieces of my broken heart and mend it back together. As cliché as that sounded it was true and now here we are. I felt an arm wrap around my waist pulling me to a chest and I immediately knew it was Sky. He was being jealous but he had a right to anyway. “What are you doing here?” Sky sneered at Josh making him uncomfortable. “I work here.” Josh stated plainly, I saw his eye twinkle and I knew he was up to no good but I was here to have a good time and no ex of mine could ruin that. “It’s alright Sky let’s just begin shooting.” I said soothing Sky and then after awhile he agreed and we went back to Tristan. We got the guns and were shooting dummies.
I shot almost all 5 right in the head. Sky looked at me and I looked back at him with a cheeky grin and there was Tristan who looked like a pedophile, he smiled at us creepily. But I knew he meant no harm, we always did this. “Let’s have a contest!” Sky announced loudly gathering unwanted attention. We all agreed that we had shoot the 3 dummies right in the heart and whoever did so won. We all took turns so it was fair. Tristan went first; he held his arm out shutting one eye to get better aim. BAM! He shot the dummy right in the stomach. “Ha, I’ll beat that!” Sky said winking to me and I made myself to the line where we all were supposed to stand. “Hey I’ll be beside the dummy to laugh at you when you fail.” Sky said running out beside the dummy and standing there grinning like a fool. I didn’t want to ruin his happiness so I went with the flow. “Here goes!” I shouted to him and he nodded excitedly. I held my arm out like Tristan’s but don’t close my eye because I needed all the vision I could get. I put my other hand on my shooting hand to steady the gun. Sky gave me thumbs up. Right as I was about to shoot someone ran into me and I pulled the trigger by accident. I missed the dummy and instead shot Sky in the heart. I turned around to curse at the person and realized that it was Josh. That little-- “See? You got the dummy in the heart but with my help of course.” I pushed Josh away and ran to Sky as he fell down and laid motionless in a pool of blood. Another sound of a shot surrounded the air but this time it hit me. I fell to the ground as I clutched my leg crying in pain. “If I can’t have you then no one can.” Josh said deviously then he turned around and made a run for it. I laid there as I clutched my leg and cried for Sky, Who knew? Who knew our happily ever after was a happily never after.
