MIRRORS
Chapter Five
It's been about a month since my mother was arrested, eighth
grade ended, and I moved in with my dad. He lives nearby, so
unfortunately I don't have to switch schools. The first
conversation between us in eight years was very awkward.
"Uh...hi, Dad," I said uncomforably.
"Hello. Your, um...room is upstairs. I didn't know what color you
wanted, so I picked pink," he mumbled.
"Thanks."
"Yeah."
"Ok..." I started to trudge up the stairs with my bags in hand.
Ugh...that wasn't the long-lost-father-daughter-reunion I was
hoping for. As Dad said, my room was pink with a pink and
purple comforter on a queen size bed. A small bedside table was
next to it, and directly across was a huge vanity. The room
wasn't half-bad. "Thanks, Dad," I muttered to myself. I
started to unpack my clothes. I noticed a box sitting in a
corner. Curious, I went over and opened it. A brand-spanking new
MacBook was inside. A piece of paper was on top of it that
read "Here you go. A little welcome-back present. Love,
Dad." Awesome! I made a mental note to thank him
later.
Awhile later, after I had finished unpacking, it was around
nine. I went downstairs to get something to eat. I opened the
pantry door...then stopped. If the reason I was gaining
weight because I was eating too much, then maybe I should just
stop eating.

Chapter Four
"WHAT? HOW?!" I exclaimed. Mom's in jail? I couldn't believe
this, but then again, I could. I feel like I'm betraying her but
I can't help thinking that she deserved this.
"Well, while your mother was hitting you, a police car had driven
up and the police man had seen her. I'm sorry, honey," says the
nurse sadly, pats my head gently, and walks out of the room. It
suddenly feels very lonely.
Who will i live with now? My dad? I hadn't seen him in eight
years.
*FLASHBACK*
A five-year-old Destiny plays in a sandbox in a
backyard. She digs her finger around a small, shabby
sandcastle, making a rough moat. She giggles, feeling a rush
of energy and happiness. The sun shined bright in a cloudless
sky, and a soft, warm, breeze caressed her skin. Her mom and dad
were making lunch for her in the kitchen. Destiny heard the
clink-clank of china. Then, she heard a very different noise
coming from the open screen door.
"Get out! Just GET OUT!" her mother screamed.
"We can work through this! It's all gonna be fine!" her
father yelled back.
"NO! This is--" her mom suddenly got quiet, and Destiny didn't
hear what she said. "--we're talking about! It's
serious stuff! YOU caused all this, so GET
OUT!"
"Or what? You'll call the cops?" he taunted.
Her mom screamed in frustration. The front door slammed, and
an engine gunned to life. Her dad's car sped away. It was
the last time Destiny would see her father for a long
time.

MIRRORS
CHAPTER
THREE
Mom
approached me, jaw clenched.
"Let's go," she growled. I followed her out to our beat-up Chevy.
It was missing all of its windows (besides the windshield) and
was a dirty, ugly brown. As soon as I was buckled, she took off.
Did i mention that she drives like a maniac? She's not the
world's most responsible driver. 3 DUIs and 4 speeding tickets.
I'm surprised that she hasn't had her car taken away permanetly
yet. She gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned
white. Her hair is frazzled and messy, and her eyes are
wild and angry. I can tell that she'd been drinking.
"You had better be grateful that I came and got you. I had
to leave work. Charles wasn't happy. I might get fired!" Mom
snapped. She works at some dirty bar for some dirty man. A
stoplight ahead turned red. Mom slammed on the brakes and I
lurched forward. She turned to me, fire in her eyes. She suddenly
slapped me across the face. I shrunk back, letting out a small
whimper. Mom kept hitting me, letting out all her drunken rage on
my head. She does this a lot...sometimes she uses more than just
her fist.
"Please stop!" I sobbed. I was scared...she was really mad. The
street was vacant of cars and people, until I saw a police car
drive up beside us. My vision started to distort and change
color. I saw stars. Mom was stil hitting me and screaming, and
the last thing i remember is hearing a siren wail.

I wake up in the hospital. I hear a constant beeping. I sit
up, and suddenly feel dizzy and nauseated. I fall back against my
pillow. Let's try this again. Woah...ok, less dizzy. There's a
table next to my bed with wilting tulips in a vase. A thick metal
medical bracelet covers my wrist. I see my reflection. A few
small Band-Aids dot a swollen face covered with purple
bruises. It's appalling. I panic. Where's my mom? When will I get
out? The beeping noise gets faster. A nurse rushes in with
an IV.
"Is something wrong?" she asks anxiously.
Eying the needle cautiously, I inquire hysterically,
"Where's my mom?"
The nurse looks away nervously and replies. "Honey...I don't know
how to tell you this. But...your mom got arrested. She's in
jail."

MIRRORS
Chapter
Two
The
laughter of my peers followed me into the bathroom. I tossed my
stuff on the floor and hurried for the nearest
stall. Sinking to my knees, I started to cry. What they
said was true. I was so fat and hideous. Their cruel words
haunted me, ringing over and over in my head until it hurt. I was
breathing heavily, and then i started to vomit. I heard the
all-too-familiar click clack of heels sound in the
bathroom.
Someone opened my stall door and said something close to "having
fun?" followed by laughter. I was dizzy and couldn't get this
waahhhhh noise out of my head. I felt a nudge on my
knee. I stopped throwing up long enough to turn around, just to
see a pair of perfectly painted toenails on a pair of perfect
feet wrapped up in strappy heels. I looked up. Victoria...I threw
up again.
On her shoes.
Big mistake.
"EW! GROSS! THAT IS SO DISGUSTING! You just THREW
UP! All over my SHOES! They're MUI-MUIS! Do you KNOW how
expensive these are?! More money than your mom's annual
SALARY!" Victoria shrieked. I flinched away. She stalked out of
the bathroom in a flurry of rage. Uh oh...I just made my life ten
times worse. Shaking, I stood up and flushed the
toilet. I rinsed my mouth, picked up my stuff, and went to the
nurse.
Nurse Amy said I should call my mom to come pick me up and bring
me home. She suggested a nice long rest and a few Tums. I knew my
mom probably wouldn't leave work to pick me up, and if she did,
she'd be furious, but i did anyways.
"Hello?" grumbled an irritated voice on the other end.
Mom.
"Hi, Mom. I, uh, got sick today at school. Could you, um,
pick me up and take me home please?"
"Whatever. I'll be there in ten minutes," she said. I heard
a click; she must've hung up.
"She'll be here in ten minutes," I told the nurse. Soon
enough, but still later than ten minutes, my mom walked in. Her
eyes zoomed in on me, her brows making an angled V. Oh, Lord.
That's her angry face.
*Faves? Follows? Feedback please!
Suggestions would be awesome:)
thanks!*
MIRRORS
~
My name is Destiny Walton. This is the story of my
miserable life as a fat teen. ~
I heard murmurs coming from all sides of the hallway. I
picked up a few of the conversations.
"...gross! Look at that shirt!"
"...muffin top. So fat."
"...ugly."
Did people really think that blocking their mouth with
their hand covers up the sound? And the pain of the words in
them? I mean, is it really that hard to make it a little less
obvious? Evidently not. I'd heard it all before, but it
hurt a little more each time i did. I wanted to sink in to the
ground, unnoticed. It was a wasted hope. it gets harder every day
to become invisible when you're already seen.
I clutch my books tighter to my chest when i see the queen bee of
the school, Victoria Wellbourne, strut down the hall. Uh
oh, I thought. Here it comes. As I predicted,
Victoria and her two best friends, Christine and Raquelle, see me
and immediately head my way. The Alpha and her Betas. I walk
faster. Maybe I can get to my first class before they get to me.
I knew I couldn't; they were walking so fast in their 3-inch
Mui-Muis that i could barely hear my own terrified thoughts over
the rapid clickclickclickclickclicks. It's middle
school, but that doesn't mean its not a runway too. Suddenly they
were right in front of me, blocking my path.
"Hi, Destiny. We were just wondering where you got your
adorable shirt. Wait, don't tell me. Clearance rack at
Goodwill?" Victoria said in a snotty soprano. The Betas giggled.
Victoria smiled smugly and flipped her pencil-straight blonde
hair over her shoulder. Alpha was right, of course. It wasn't my
fault my family was having money troubles. But I wasn't about to
tell her that. I don't even know if I can say anything
at this point.
"Um...no, a-actually. I got it at...um..." I stammered.
"Oh, I know. Target, right?"
"...no..." I said. I was wearing a slightly-too-small green shirt
with a butterfly and a brown stain on it. Mom had
gotten it for only a few dollars at Goodwill. My
rolls of fat were even more defined than normal.
"You know, you should really wear clothes that don't make
you look so fat. Here's a suggestion. Get rid of your
entire wardrobe. And lose a billion pounds," Victoria sneered,
and the Betas smirked. I gulped and glanced around. Almost
everybody was staring at me and the intimidating trio. Tears
welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill over. Where were all
the teachers in the hall to protect me? I stuttered out something
unintelligible and turned to run for the
bathroom.
