Well, the answer is simple. You dont know it, but in this world, this life, you're already chosen perfectly so you'll end up moving into a house so that somebody that's died while living there sometime in the last 500 years will get along perfectly with you. These people become your roomates, even though at times it gets a little crowded.

Thats what I thought.
Now say theres a girl. This girl lives in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She has no idea about any of the "souls" roaming just about mindlessly around her large penthouse apartment. She also doesnt know that the "souls" can see her, and everything she does. She just cant see them.
