“Look, Slater,” that was my last name.
“I’m not, but I’m sure if you were my
tutor…” He gave my body another appraising look.
“I’d enjoy math a lot more, if you catch my
drift, sweetheart.”
I flung my math textbook in his face and then laughed.
“You always were hilarious, Holmes.”
“I wasn’t joking…” he mumbled off
until our teacher yelled at us for talking.

Creative Writing was my last class before we all met up to
head to lunch, Mia came to my locker to wait for me.
“So?!” I elbowed her in the stomach a couple of
times. She made a loud eeeepp noise.
“So what?” she asked.
I looked over her shoulder at the blonde shadow behind her.
“Oh, Serena, this is Sam. Sam, this is Serena. And
yeah,” she looked around for Sam’s hand to hold.
I was so happy for her, Sam was exactly what she needed, and
he wasn’t like the other boys she always fell for.
He had really changed her for the better.
Sam and I talked on the way to lunch as Mia called her mom to
ask something.
“Serena and Mia’s boytoy, over here!” Joel
shouted across the open café area.
All the walls of the café were complete glass, letting
in all the beautiful light.
There was a salad bar on the far left, and a sandwich/soup
area directly across from it.
Then of course, the main meal section was in the middle.
The tables were round, made of granite and the chairs were
plush, in all different colors.
Joel, Jake, Violet, Jasper, and Joel’s girl from this
morning were all sitting at a table in the middle.
“Alright, everyone is coming to my house this Friday to
play True American, okay?” Jasper said, just as Sam and
I reached the table. “My parents aren’t going to
be home all weekend.”
Joel and Jake high fived each other.
Violet pouted. “My familyyy,” she said, dragging
out the y which made it sound like she was totally lying.
“Is having a family reunion, so we should like
reschedule.” She took a sip of her diet coke.
Joel laughed at her. “You want all of us to change the
date just because you can’t go, h0e?” he turned
to face Jake. “Sorry, your little girlfriend
isn’t coming then, sucks,” he said to Violet.
And that was when I remembered why Joel and I were such good
friends.
