It's not as complicated as it seems. At about 14, we start high school at 9th grade (freshman year) and continue there until we graduate in 12th grade (senior year). 10th grade is known as sophomore year and 11th grade is known as junior year. So it is basically what the people in that grade/year are called.
At a lot of schools, freshman are made fun of or disliked (not usually to an extremely mean way, but a teasing way) because they are 'newbies', which is why the other grades hate them.
