Today in French class, my teaching was telling us that when you have a masculine plural word that ends with "al" you change it to "aux". So, everything was going all fine and dandy when this kid asked, "What if it's a feminine word?" She said, "Oh, then you just add an "s", just like normal. Yeah, masculine words are all complicated, weird and hard to remember, but feminine words are easy, normal and make sense."

When you forget someone's name say, "What's your name again." They'll respond with their first bame, albeit somewhat hurt that you forgot. Then emphatically reply, "No, no, your last name." Much relieved they'll happily oblige. You now have their first and last name without insulting them. Works every time.
