I think it's more about reclaiming the slur. It's good to be careful about using the phrase in reference to other people, but using in a general sense or to refer to oneself should be acceptable.

Tensions have been escalating between Israelis and Palestinians since Israel was formed. In the past 7 years, Israel has bombed Gaza three times (Gaza is one of the most populous area in the world with over a million inhabitants so any bombing garuntees the death of civilians)
Hamas was firing rockets into Israel. As retaliation, Israel has begun to bomb the crap out of Gaza.
One article (http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/07/us-cautions-israel-civilian-casualties-201471822402778906.html) says that 65 Palestinians, at least 15 of them under the age of 18, have died since Thursday when Israel started a ground invasion. In all, 307 Palestinians have died & 2260 have been injured.
Israel has warned Palestinians of bombings and warned them to evacuated but Egypt has closed it's borders to Palestine and Israel has blocked their borders as well.

It's all really complicated and a lot to take in.
