He ducked
his head down to kiss me, but stopped less than an inch from my
lips. "I love you," he whispered, then softly pressed
his lips against mine. I'd waited for that moment forever,
but it wasn't how I thought it would be. He gently pulled
away, and immediately apologized. "I'm sorry that
was..I shouldn't have done any of that..It was a bet..I am
so sorry Emi," he started. "A...a bet?" I asked,
my voice quavering with tears. He looked down. Just as he was
whispering I'm sorry one more time, I turned and ran down
the hall. I ran to the stairs and started down, tears flying
across my face. BAM!! I ran into the wall, and fell backwards
down the stairs. Wish I didn't wear slip on shoes now. I
tried to get up on my feet, but fell back down the moment I
took a step. "EMI! EMI, WHERE ARE YOU?" I heard JD
yelling from the top of the stairs. Or maybe it was my
imagination. I was dizzy. The last thing I remember is JD's
face when he looked over the ledge and saw me on the floor.
***
JD'S POV
I shouldn't have made that bet, I know. STUPID! She'll
never even look at me anymore, and for what? some cash? GOD
WHY?! The thoughts tumbled around my head, guilt building in my
stomach, making me sick. I heard a crash from down the hall.
"Emi," I whispered. "Emi!" I yelled,
realizing that something was wrong. "JD, do you know where
Emi is? Coach is looking for her," Becky, one of the girls
on the softball team with Emi, asked. I didn't answer.
Something was wrong. I ran to the stairwell, faster
than I'd ever run in my life. "EMI! EMI, WHERE ARE
YOU?" I yelled as soon as the door to the stairwell flung
open. I glanced over the ledge, and saw her. Unconscious, tear
stains on her face, she lay still on the floor, her ankle at an
unnatural angle. "EMI! No!" I flew down the stairs to
her side, trying not to cry, my voice choked from holding back
my tears. Her heart was still beating, and she was breathing. I
relaxed the slightest bit. "I'm so sorry, it's all
my fault," I whispered, tears flowing down my cheeks one
after another. I picked up her limp body and carried her to the
nurses office. "She..she fell. Down the
stairs..unconscious..ankle. Look at her ankle," I choked
out, looking at her ankle dangling and swaying as I wobbled,
fear sticken and feeling sick. I layed her on the bed, and
broke down on the floor, sobbing. If any of the other football
players saw me right now, I'd never live it
down..

"All day. I was watching my him all day. I can't believe I'm falling for my best friend. No. I'm not falling for him. I'm just...confused. Yeah. Confused," I thought to myself, staring at him, in last period. I can't like anyone, I don't believe in love, it's never right. I always get hurt. I kept thinking. "EMI! Please answer the question," my teacher said, Mr. Noes, said. "I'm sorry, could you repeat the question?" I asked. Mr. Noes rolled his eyes. "Translate this sentence from French to Enlish: Voici une maison bleue et blanche. Il est jolie et petite," he repeated. "Here is a blue and white house. It is pretty and small," I said easily. He glared at me for a second, then moved on with the lesson. I glanced at JD again, and realized that he was smiling at me. "Good job," he mouthed. I smiled back, and mouthed thanks back. Mr. Noes ended the lesson. He gave us the last 3 minutes of class to talk. JD came over. "How do you memorize these French words! I thought he said the dog is blue and white. He has a small body," he said. I laughed. He looked into my eyes, and I looked up into his. Neither of us spoke, we just stared into eachother's eyes. The bell rang, but neither of us moved for a second. "C'mon Emi, we gotta get to practice!" said Becky, pulling me away. JD followed. "Wait, Emi, can I talk to you for a second?" I looked at Becky. "I'll be there in a second," then followed JD to the other end of the hall. "You looked really pretty today," he said. I blushed, looking at my shoes again. He gently pushed my chin up, so I was looking into his eyes again. I wasn't expecting what came next.

Her alarm sang out its monotone
beeps. She slapped the snooze button, and fell back asleep.
Three snoozes later, she slowly crawled out of bed. She
grunted, sounded groggy, and collapsed to the floor.
"Forget school," she said/yawned. Her dad walked in.
"Emi, it's time to get up. Get dressed. Now.
You're gonna miss you're bus, and I don't know who
you'll get to pick you up and drop you off." Ick.
School. Emi slowly got up and started doing her hair. A simple
messybun. No, scratch that, a horribly messy messybun. She
didn't care. She put on light mascara and some lipgloss,
and slipped on her school uniform. Ick. Their uniforms were
gross. Whatever, she plunked down the stairs and grabbed her
bags. Another day at school. Great. "Bye mom," she
said. And with that, she walked out the door.
***
Two silent, boring bus rides later, she was walking through the
halls with her friend Elana. "Ellie, do you ever wonder if
Mr. Right is right in front of you?" she smirked when
Mark, Ellie's crush, was walking with his friends right in
front of them. Ellie pushed Emi into the bathroom before Mark
could even turn around. "C'mon Em, what was that for?
Must you? HAVE YOU NO DECENCY?!" she said. Emi laughed,
and Ellie had the slightest trace of a smile on her lips.
"C'mon, we gotta get to homeroom before the bell. Mr.
Romby will kill me if I'm late one more time," Emi
replied, then walked out of the bathroom. Ellie followed
quickly, and grabbed her shoulder. "Seriously, please
stop?" she said just as Mark was passing by to go to his
homeroom. Emi pushed Ellie right into Mark and darted down the
hall. "Catchya later Ellie!" she yelled back. She was
looking back at Ellie, her red face visible from that far away
and growing brighter by the second. She was never going to
forgive Emi. By the time she turned around, it was too late.
She ran into Kayla. "Whatch it, nerd!" Kayla
screamed, pushing Emi's books to the ground. She pushed
passed Emi and strolled down the hall. Her posse followed,
knocking Emi to the ground. A crowd had gathered, everyone
laughing. Ellie stood at the back, watching, her face sad,
pained for Emi and this humiliation, but afraid to make a
stand. Emi understood. Making a stand for the school nerd in
front of this big of a crowd was social suicide. Ellie risked
enough just hanging out with Emi. She began picking up her
books quickly. When she stood up, she bumped into JD, her
crush. Not even Ellie knew she liked him. He handed her a book
she missed. "Thanks," she said shyly, staring at the
ground. "You know, those may be cute shoes, but you
don't have to stare at them," he joked. What a corny
line. She couldn't help but giggle. She looked up into his
eyes. He took her books from her arms, and walked her into
homeroom. "Maybe today won't be so bad," she
thought.

She closed her eyes and tried to
sing along with the music she was playing, her voice cracked
under the pressure of trying so hard not to cry. She sounded
like a dying animal. She giggled at the thought of her voice,
then remembered more and more about how much her life has
changed. She wanted so badly to cry, to run to him crying and
for him to pull her into a hug. He was her bestfriend. Did she
want more though? "No," she whispered, "I
don't want a boyfriend." It was true, boyfriends and
dating brought too much drama and pain and tears. She just
wanted her bestfriend. She kept thinking. Her last relationship
ended so randomly, her life was slipping away from her grasp,
and she was losing her mind. She didn't know what she could
do. She was getting on her family's and friends nerves.
Except his. Gosh, her mind kept fluttering back to him. Why?
She couldn't wait for the weekend to end so she could walk
to classes with him again. She needed to clear her head. Going
for a walk always cleared her mind. She glanced out the window.
Black out. "Great," she thought. That's out of
the question. The song changed. She had never heard this one
before. She listened closely to the lyrics. They made her hurt
more, reminding her of herself, but as she kept listening, she
realized it was a happy song. She thought more. Maybe she
shouldn't be reminiscing on old memories. She should forget
the past. Right? But if the past is forgotten, it is often
repeated. That's why we remember. She hated the thought of
repeated the chaos in her life, but remebering the past hurt.
Again, she wished and longed for his arms. He wasn't
amazingly strong, but she felt safe with him. And happy. He
always kept her smiling and giggling with his teasing.
"Why do I keep thinking of you?" she asked out loud.
Of course, no one was around to hear. She was barricaded in her
room, as usual. Her urge to cry grew, but the tears behind her
eyes faded. She knew that now she couldn't cry, no matter
how much she wanted to. Life confused her so. She wanted to bad
to give up, but knew she couldn't. She no longer believed
in love, and her belief that she would have a bestfriend always
was fading too. But somewhere deep down she felt that she had a
purpose. That was the glimmer of hope that kept her going each
day. She wanted to lay down and just die for a moment, not have
any worries. Of course that wouldn't happen. She layed her
head back against the wall she was sitting against and closed
her eyes again. She didn't remember opening them, but that
didn't matter. Her mind floated back to her previous
relationship. She was so convinced he was the one. She let out
a long sigh, and curled up on the floor. From that she fell
into a restless, nightmarish sleep.

I
try
I try not to
show how much it kills me that we arn't even
remotely friends anymore. Remember all the laughs and
how we always had eachothers back? And how a boy got
between us? I miss the times when I could come to
sobbing and 3 minutes later I'd be crying even
harder, but from laughing so hard. I miss how we
could just glance at eachother and know what the
other was thinking. I miss having you as a friend,
but we'll never get another
shot.
