1. They say the eyes
Are the windows
To the soul.
But I say
The heart is the
Window to the mind.
With the slightest push,
It can be flung
Wide open.
With the slightest pull,
The blinds can
Be shut tight.
And without a thought
Though light as a feather,
It will be tossed
On the wing
And aflutter away
Like a blackbird
In the night.
2. They say that
Sticks and stones
May break one’s bones,
But words, they
Cannot hurt.
So why is it
That a heart must be
Killed with a stick
Or a stone
To no longer ache
When a loved one’s words
Or enemy’s curse
Can break it to the bone?
3. Friendship and love
Are two.
Friendship and love and the heart
Are one.
4. She trudged into
The snowy mountains.
Her heart had fallen
Into the snow
Farther back on the path.
Soon to her mind this occured,
And she collapsed
As the pain
Of solitude sank in.
All about her
It was still.
5. I do not know
Which to prefer;
The utter peace of
Lying alone-
My heart beat
In my mind-
Or the beauty
Of breathing beside another,
Ear warm against chest.
6. It was evening
all afternoon.
It was snowing
And it was going
To keep snowing.
They sat together
By the fire
That heated
Their hearts.
