PROLOGUE
Ever wish you could
change your past? Like go back and fix a broken friendship? Or
tell your first crush how you really felt? Or maybe take a risk
once in a while? Of course you do. Everybody does. I know I do.
And lucky for me, I get a chance to start over.
My name's Kate Thomas, and I'm nineteen years old. I
finished high school last year, and took a year off from
schooling. In that year, my best friend Olivia Wilson and I
decided to move to London, England. We purchased a flat, and just
moved in last month, so we were still pretty new to the
town.
I'm not the smartest person you'll ever meet, so I
decided not to go to college, which is why I'm moving to
another country. I'm ready for a new start, for new friends,
and most of all, for some fun.
"Kate, get dressed we're going out." Olivia yelled
to me from her bedroom. I walked over to my closet and went
through my clothes, trying to find the perfect outfit, in case I
ran into a cute guy at the club. I decided to wear a coral and
black tight dress, which was club appropriate, but not too
revealing. I paired it with my coral heels and a heart necklace.
I straightened my hair and put on my makeup, then walked to the
small kitchen of our flat.
"Ready?" Olivia asked as she walked out of the
bathroom, dressed in the same dress as me, but with a different
pattern, leopard print and a cream bottom.
"Ready!" I said as we walked out of the apartment and
took the elevator to the lobby. We hailed a cab and told him to
take us to Club 18, which was a club where you only had to be
eighteen to enter, hence the name.
When we got there, we showed out ID's and walked in, the
music blasting and the dance floor full of people.
"I'm going to get something to drink, you want
anything?" Olivia asked, and I shook my head. Even though
the drinking age in England was eighteen, I chose not to drink. I
was always the designated driver, but I didn't
mind.
I was scoping out the club, my eyes alert for cute boys. So far
the only guys I saw were either completely wasted or too old. I
rolled my eyes and walked over to where Olivia was standing at
the bar, talking to a semi-cute guy.
"Hi, I'm Kate." I said, shaking his hand.
"Jake. Can I buy you and your friend a drink?" he
asked.
"No thanks, but Liv would love one." I said, gesturing
to my friend and walking to the bathroom. I checked my makeup,
which looked fine, like it always did. Why weren't there any
cute single guys in London? I closed my eyes and took a deep
breath, smiled at myself in the mirror, and walked back out to
the dance floor.
That's when I saw him. I'm pretty sure he saw me too,
because we held each others' gaze for more than five seconds.
If that didn't give it away, I realized he was walking over
towards me. So I pulled out my cell phone and did the whole
'fake phone call' thing. It didn't work, because when
I turned around after I thought he was gone, he was standing
right next to me.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't help but notice your beauty
from all the way across the club." he said. Yeah,
right.
"How many times have you used that line?" I asked,
knowing a pickup line when I heard it.
"Caught. I've used it before, but this time I actually
mean it." he said, his accent catching me off
guard.
He was tall and tan, with brown hair and beautiful brown eyes. He
looked like he could be a model. So why was he talking to
me?
"Care to dance?" he asked, and I followed him onto the
floor. I lost myself in the music, throwing my arms up and
swaying my hips. After a few hours of dancing, and multiple
drinks for Olivia, I decided it was probably best that we
left.
"It was nice meeting you." I said, batting my eyelashes
at the guy. We never exchanged names.
"Can I have your number?" he asked, once again, his
accent made me swoon.
"No. But you can meet me at the coffee shop downtown
tomorrow morning at 10." I said, then turned my back to him
and walked away, dragging Olivia as we exited the club.
I had a feeling that this summer was going to be exciting, if
tonight was and indication of what it would bring.
