Losing Hope
Chapter Three

That night, I sat at the end of the dinner table. We were having pasta with homemade meatballs. The dim of the light above us made the dinner table have a yellowish glow and casted shadows across our faces. I picked at my food with my fork. My cheek rested on the palm of my other hand. “Eat your food, hunny.” Grandmother persuaded. I looked at her, with my lifeless eyes. Her mouth started to form words. But I got up from the table before she say them. “Nia come back here!” Mom yelled as I climbed the steps and headed for my aunt’s room. I kicked open my door. Which hit my wall with a big bang. Tears streamed down my cheeks. I ran to my window. Snow fell from the clouds. Everything was covered in white. The footprints and snow angels the kids made before were getting covered up. I felt my stomach tighten up. My mom started up the steps. Her foot steps were growing louder and louder as they got closer to my room. I sprinted to the door and locked it before she got there.I kicked the door and slumped down on my bed. I looked at my clock, it was 8:35. The red numbers shined on my pillow. I closed my eyes. I could feel tears stream down my cheeks.

Losing Hope
Chapter Three

I slammed my door shut. My aunt’s old room smelled of mildew and mold. Some of her old toys were still sitting on dusty shelves. Pictures of her when she was in the hospital were hanging on the wall, closest to the bed. She had cancer too. But she was too late, and they tried all they could to save her. But she told me, when I visited her for the last time when I was 4, that all she wanted to do was visit god in heaven and be able to see her friend Olivia again. I walked to my window to look out and see the snow glowing. Kids were sliding on the ice. Once a little girl fell and started crying. A older boy, maybe her brother, helped her get up and hugged her. It made me smile. I touched my hand to the icy window. Snow started to fall again. Making some of the kids go inside. My stomach dropped. I felt like I was alone. I quickly pulled away from the window. “Nia?” My mom called. “No,” I whispered. I crossed the room to the door. Locking it before my mom could start crying in front of me. “I’m fine!” I called. I put my ear the the door, listening to what my mom and grandmother were talking about. “Mom.” My mom started to say. “Nai...has, has Melanoma skin cancer.” My jaw clenched together. I hated that word. Melanoma. The knot in my stomach tightened. I could hear grandmother start to sob. “No. Please don’t cry.” I whispered, started to feel my eyes start to sting. “Please.”

Losing Hope
Chapter Two

The cold, dry, winter air surrounded me when I climbed into my moms used Honda. I noticed myself in the mirror, when I was struggling to buckle and I turned ghostly white. Even my ocean blue eyes looked lifeless. I shifted in my seat, starting to feel uncomfortable, and switched the radio on with my shaky hand and sat back in my seat. My mom clutched the steering wheel. Her knuckles started turning white. Just as white as my skin, and the snow on the ground. She soon settled, when she caught me looking at her in the corner of her eye. “Nia.” She said. We were stopped at a red light, so she decided to try to make conversation. “I’m sorry. I-” The sound of a car horn cut her off. Mom jerked the car forward when she realized the light turned green. “Please..please don’t say anything else.” I thought in my head. “It’s already hard enough to hold back the tears. I don’t need to talking to ruin it.” I shifted closer to the window. Outside, kids played in the snow. Screaming and having fun while they were throwing snowballs at each other. I looked at them. Wishing I could be one of them. “Please Nia, can we talk?” My mom asked, trying to make eye contact. We pulled up in the drive-way of my grandmother’s. We were staying with her while we were searching for a house closer to the city. “Please?” My mom tried again. “No.” I thought. Then I unbuckled my seat belt and slammed the car door behind me. “How was it?” My Grandmother said, while holding the door for me. I just sighed at rushed past her. ”

Losing Hope
Chapter One

I sat in the lobby of my local hospital. My elbows were rested on my knees, and I interlocked my fingers and rested my head on them. My mom went to the bathroom. She said she had to go pee, but her voice started to quiver when she was talking. “Mommy, what’s wrong with that girl.” A little girl next to me whispered to her mother. I looked up at her. She was about four or five. Her hair was completely shaved off and she had a breathing tube in her nose. I smiled. Trying not to look nervous. But her bright green eyes just stared at me. Her mother looked up from her magazine. She grabbed the little girl and sat her on her lap. My smile faded and I looked back down at the floor. “Hi sweetie.” My mom sighed as she sat in the seat next to me. I looked at her. Her face was wet and her eyes were red and puffy. She’d been crying. I tried to avoid eye contact. My eyes started to sting and I got a lump in the back of my throat. “Mom, I’m gonna r-.” A squeak of a door cut me off. My eyes shot up. A doctor and a nurse, who helped me take my test, walked toward us. I got up and stuck out my hand to greet the doctor. I noticed my hand was shaking and I stuck it in my coat pocket. “Hello Nia.” The doctor said. “I’m doctor Gadge.” His eyes showed sorrow. My heart stopped and waited for the bad news. I sat back down in my seat. The soft cushioning sunk, just as the same time as my stomach. “Nia.” Doctor Gadge went on. “I’m sorry, but I may have bad news.” My mom grabbed my hand. “Mrs. Dulce, I’m afraid Nai has,” He paused. My eyes shot towards him. “Has, Melanoma skin cancer.” The earth stopped. Stopped breathing, stopped spinning, stopped living. I could feel every bone in my body turn into jelly. My mom dropped my hand and ran to the bathroom. I found my spot on the floor again. And took a deep breath. Doctor Gadge touched my should. “I’m so sorry.” He whispered. Then left, with the nurse trailing behind him. I looked up, and saw the little girls green eyes locked onto mine. Her hand stuck out in front of her. “Hello, my name is Hope.”
