The Summer Everything
Changed
Preface
New York was
amazing. I loved everything about the city. The apartment i lived
in. My mom. My sister. My boyfriend. My friends. The ability to
walk around all day and never get lost. To be able to just pull a
taxi over and take it wherever I wanted to go. It was the city
that never sleeps.
There was just so much drama though. You could always here a
police cars sirens echoing down the street. You could hear the
gang fights if you made a wrong turn. The guys thought they could
do whatever they wanted to the girls. They thoughts they could
cheat on them. They thought they could cheat on me.
So I needed a break. How could you blame
me?
I was a tired girl living in a restless city

The Summer Everything
Changed
Chapter 5
Oh my
gosh, how did this happen?
I was walking down the beach my heart thudding as he told
me another embarrassing story from when he was little.
This wasn’t my idea. I hated the perky blond lady
that was sitting at the table and laughing at my dad’s
jokes. I think she did like me though, so I’m that deep
in. I basically just kept to myself until I couldn’t
stand eating dinner with them anymore.
Derrik was working in a huge library in progress in our
house. He insisted that he could work great with tools so dad
let him put in some of the shelves, that’s were I went. I
opened the door that reveled the large book room and a tall boy
my age working on it. He kept to himself, not whistling or
singing like most boys I knew would do.
It was apperent that he didn’t know I was there.
After a couple minute of pounding on the shelves, he stepped
down to get more materials.
His brown hair was matted in sweat at the top and he kept
pushing I tout of his eyes. I was studying him carefully when
he realized I was standing there. “What the-!” He
stepped back. “How long have you been there?”
Bewilderment showed in his voice.
“Only a few minutes.” I sat down in a chair
and followed me over.
“What did you think of Grace?” He sat down
like this was his own house.
“I don’t know.” I answered truthfully,
“She seems to make him really happy.”
He chuckled but didn’t reply. We sat there for a
minute before I finally broke the golden silence,
“I’m going to beach for a walk.” I stood up
and dusted my sun dress off.
He stood up as well, yawing, “I’d better get
home then.” We walked through the small door again and I
saw that dad and Grace were still laughing at the kitchen
table.
“Dad. I’ll be going now to the beach.” A
concerned look crossed his face.
“Alone? It’s already nine and that’s
usually when bad things happen.”
I rolled my eyes at him “Dad, I’ll
be-,”
“I’ll go with her,” Derrik cut me off
with a smile, “It would be nice to catch up on the 14
years we missed.”

Four
“Um, Dad…” I swallowed hard waiting for a
response.
“Sweats, you won’t have anything to worry about, she
will love you! Your so mature for your age and you are seventeen.
If you want I could let you go to the beach, the waters great
this time of year.”
“Yeah, that sounds okay.” I looked over his shoulder
to the black door. “Can I go now?”
“Well… I was hoping you would want to meet Grace.
She’s just amazing and if you’re staying with me for
long, she might become your new mom.”
“Alright dad, whatever makes you happy.” I smiled
graciously at him. He had to be giving up so much by moving here.
“Let me get changed.”
“Right, you have the room in the loft. There’s your
own bathroom but if Grace moves in you might have to share it
with her. She doesn’t think it’s appropriate for a
male and female to share a bathroom.” He pointed towards
the stairs that spiraled up a little onto a platform hallway.
“Thanks.”
***
The room was nice with a cozy couch and full sized bed. It
wasn’t too big for my style like I thought it would be. The
walls were painted a sunset orange that made the whole room feel
not as new as it really was. There was an open door that led
outside to a balcony that overlooked that beautiful ocean. The
curtains were flowing into the room and the warm light from the
sunset trickled in leaving a picture perfect scene.
I felt my phone buzz in my pocket ruining my moment of
beauty.
One new message
From Jack
Hey Susie, what if I move up near where you live? I’m old
enough to move out aren’t I?
I sighed and hit reply,
Jack,
I don’t think that’s a good idea. Ur family
needs you and you shudnt live on Ur own
I hit send and put my purple suit case on the bed to get a summer
dress out. I chose a light blue one with a streak in it. I
slipped it over my bathing suit because on the way home dad said
the pool was open 24/7.
“How do you like it here?” I turned in surprise to
see a very young woman standing in the door.
“Oh my God, are you Grace?” She was way to young to
be my dads girlfriend. She laughed and shook her head.
“That would be odd. I my parents live next door with my
younger brother, Derrik. I’m visiting from collage and I
remembered you a little from the last time you visited us. You
were little.” She smiled seemingly remembering a good
memory. “You had a crush on my brother.”
“How old was I? I don’t remember that at all.”
I wrinkled my nose at he thought of having a loud partying boy
live next to me. Well, maybe he was cute.
“You were both like four I think.” She played with
her brown hair awkwardly.
“Do you want to sit down?” I asked, patting the
bed.
“Sure!” She smiled. I had a weird feeling that she
had some kind of disorder. “Actually, my brother wanted to
come over and help your dad with something. I’ll go get him
real quick.”
She ran out of the room before I could say anything else.
Derrik, I thought, what a strange name.
Little did I know he would be the boy that changed my life
forever.
Thanks guys, love you all, I will
