So I like Disney movies as much as the next girl. I mean, come on I
basically grew up on them. But lately I've been thinking that
they set completely unrealistic expectations for
young girls. Like, completely.
Every Disney movie ends with a 'happily ever after.' I
don't want to be a debbie downer, but life doesn't
always end happily ever after. Life is not easy most of the
time, and making girls think that life will always work
out perfectly is not beneficial.
Then there's the whole prince thing. In
the princess movies, it always follow the same format: a beautiful
young girl with a hard life (aka a damsel in distress) gets into
some sort of trouble and in the end, a handsome prince magically
shows up to save the day and ride off with her into the sunset. ?
Where did he come from? How did he know that a young girl was
poisoned by apple somewhere in the middle of the forest? Or that a
blonde girl had a sleeping spell put on her at the top of a
tower?
I don't know about you, but the chances of anyone
finding this so-called perfect 'prince' is highly
unlikely. And it's rather disappointing because as a kid, I was
taught that every girl will have a prince.
But now that I'm older I realize: no. Not everyone will have
this fairytale life. Not everyone will end up riding a white horse
off into the sunset with a rich guy who has really fancy
clothes.
So, yes, this has been extremely pessimistic and I apologize for
slamming Disney movies. I do still love them.
I just needed to rant.
