Oh you're British! That's super cool.
How was Spanish? I'm pretty good at Spanish because my mom (& her family, obviously) is Spanish.
Ouch. i never liked biology.
It's such a good season!

Haha, yeah I am! You're... American, I presume? I don't actually know I'm just having a guess based on the vast majority of people I meet online being American, haha!

And it was iffy. The Spanish-English article translation was quite nice, as was the English-Spanish. I totally regret my essay question choice (I wrote about characters of a book rather than symbolism in a movie) and some of the listenings and readings were solid. Could have gone worse considering I revised, uh, a few hours? I was panicking for biology.

I am American!
It sounds as though you've done okay. There's not much you can do now, but for me, (and a lot of people I know) the exams that seem hard tend to be the ones you do well in.
I'd panic for biology, haha.
reply

Yeah, I've just shoved it to the back of my mind now because whatever happens, happens. And yeah, in the past, whenever I thought I'd done well on an exam, I tended to have flunked it! Biology exams in particular are like that. If you find them easy, it's because you're surface-level skimming and don't fully understand the question. If you find it hard, it's better because it means you know you need a complex answer.

But oh, I am totally panicking for bio haha!

That's the best thing about exams. Getting them done and then just forgetting that they ever happened.
Ah, I can imagine.
Hahahah oh god I would be!
I'm so happy I'm not in education atm. I'm not sure if I want to go to college though, because I took a year out for my mental wellbeing and now I'm scared it'll all go down the drain if I force myself into education again. So I have no idea what's going on in my life.

Oooh, yeah, that's a tricky thing. I'd think it over in depth (albeit you probably already have!). I'm intending to go to university provided I get good grades. Mental health is important so definitely prioritise that!
reply

What would you like to study?
Mental health is extremely important. I've realized this. I've been the happiest (probably better described as content) I can remember in this year out. I barely managed to finish high school because of numerous things and it was all a mess.
So that scares me. But it also scares me to think that I could end up doing nothing and achieving nothing.
Sorry to unleash the emotions hahahahahah.

I'm hoping to study geography, followed up by a masters degree in vulcanology and maybe even a PhD! I really like volcanoes, haha.

No, no, it's fine! I've suffered badly with anxiety for all my life and it was only last year I got some help with it. I've realised it hasn't fully gone, but it's better. But honestly, the fact you managed to finish high school itself whilst struggling with your mental health is a huge accomplishment. I don't think that by not going to college that you'll have achieved nothing. College is a great way to expand your education but there are so many other ways you can do things and achieve great things without going to college, and there have been so many people to prove this!
reply

That sounds so cool! I'm more of a history nerd but I can see the appeal.

Anxiety is poopy. Getting help was definitely a good decision of yours!
Yeah I'm proud of myself for that. It was such a struggle to get through and my family moved a lot too so it was never even constant. I'm just glad I got through it.
I'm definitely going to look at what my options are. My dad is very pushy (he's Chinese and he definitely fits the stereotype of pushy Asian parent) and thinks I should continue my studies, but my mom is very much supporting me whatever I choose.

I'm glad to hear you're proud of yourself because you should be! It sucks that your dad is pushy but it's great that your mum is supportive. I'd interpret your dad in a way that he has high expectations of you (probably because you're amazing, no doubt!) but hopefully whatever you do choose, you'll have the support of both of your parents. <3

It was definitely hard to do but I'm glad I did it instead of dropping out because I don't know what I would've done then.
He probably is. He pushed my sister a lot and she's done really well, but I think it's just harder for me because of my awful mental health. I don't see my dad much at the moment but I think he'd just have to deal with whatever decision I make.

It's like evening in the UK isn't it? How has your day been my lovely?

A lot of parents can be like that but I'm sure if he sees it could potentially be detrimental to your health, he wouldn't do push you anymore. Either way, it's your decision and your decision alone!

It is! It's almost nine here. I've done nothing but revise pretty much the entire day because I'm boring/panicking. How has your day been so far?

I'll probably talk to him at some point. Possibly when he comes down to see us in the summer/I go and visit him. It's weird to think that I'm in control of my life. I'm 19 and I still don't think I have the ability to make good decisions, haha.

Oh Christ, that's late. It's only just turning 1pm here. Ah I'm glad to know you're preparing! My day is going quite well. I've spent most of it watching Harry Potter and eating, so far. I might go out with my mom later but i don't know yet!

Haha, I know that feel. I'm 18, technicalllllly an adult, but I'd still eat ice cream for breakfast if I could.

Yeah, it is getting quite late. Are you on the west coast then? For most of my American friends it's about 4pm now. Harry Potter is great! I went to Orlando last year and spent a small fortune on getting myself a robe and a wand.

I just feel like a child still. I'm vegan so I don't eat ice cream but I relate hard. I eat chips for every meal of the day.

There's definitely no place like home, although I'm not nearly as fond of my city albeit I love my side of the country which is the North (we're so much friendlier and kinder and sweeter don't let our Southerners fool you!). Aw cool man! Hufflepuff is an awesome house.

There really isn't. As much as I lived in "homes" in the other states they didn't feel right. All my best friends live in California and it felt wrong leaving them. Oh my northern English people have really cute accents don't they. I've been to London and that's it.
Hufflepuff is great. We are 100% underrepresented.

I think it's because it's pretty easy to remember. Just three 9s so you can't really forget it.
When you have your elections, we get a lot of news reports and television things on it. I think people are just curious though about it. For tragedies, if they're big enough like school shootings, people care quite a bit.

What's a mall?
reply
QuitePie 1 decade ago
show buttons

a traditionally enclosed building. It's a large building with a lot of shops and stores inside of it. If you need clothes you'll find a mall will have many different clothing stores, a food plaza, sometimes a movie theatre, maybe some shops for electronics and games. They're fairly big obviously and you can walk for a while checking out the sales seeing what's new. Because they're big and popular it's a good place to meet up with and talk to your friends, particularly in teenage years when you are unable to drive to other locations yourself. Getting dropped off by the 'rents (Parents) and then you can get a few hours to yourself in a semi-protected space. The variety of stores can also mean that a family can visit a mall and each member can split up and meet up together (at perhaps the food court) in a few hours. There's a store for everyone.

Sounds kinda like a shopping centre except way bigger.
reply
QuitePie 1 decade ago

well we do have shopping centres too and I suppose the only real difference is the size. Malls can range. There are tiny malls that you wouldn't even spend time in. And there are malls like Sawgrass Mills Mall in Florida which is if I recall correctly a mile long. All one one floor. Most local malls are more reasonably sized, and usually (but not always) have two floors.

Can I ask a question about America?

What are 'blocks'?
reply
QuitePie 1 decade ago
show buttons

streets are often layed out in a grid like pattern. Many streets going north-south and many going east-west so a block refers to the distance between two parallel streets. For instance the film 16 Blocks has Bruce Willis traveling to a courthouse that was basically 16 streets away. It was an ironic title because 16 streets away isn't a great distance but it was an epic adventure. More casually blocks allow us to estimate distance.

As a side note blocks usually are separated by _major_ streets. Sometimes there are small side streets and/or alleys but if I say "it's 4 blocks on the left" that means 4 major streets not the mini side streets that may dead end or so.
