Smooth Ride
Chapter One

The air was cooling my sweaty neck as I sped around the course. I was zooming around turns and flying over fences. I needed to slow down to fit another stride in before the next jump, and avoid chipping in. I couldn't afford to make silly mistakes like that during competitions.
"Kelly, what are you doing?" Ella, my trainer yelled as I struggled to make the distance and get to an even pace. My face turned red and I could feel everyone's eyes on me. I was the youngest in my group, only 14. Everyone else was at least 16 and none of them thought I belonged with them. I was trying hard to prove myself.  I came to the last jump in the course, an oxar that had to be at least 3'6". I stretched my short legs as far around my 16 hand horse as I could and squeezed. I gave him a light tap with my crop, signaling for him to stake off for the tall jump. Bang. The top rail fell to the ground. I groaned. This was definitely not helping prove myself to the others. I walked back to the group with my head down.
"Kelly I don't know what to say. If you keep this up you will never win any ribbons. Felicia show her how to do the course the correct way please."
"Pay attention Kelly." Felicia said in a way that made me want to punch her in the face.

The horrible lesson was finally over. I was so embarrassed. I took care of my horse as the other riders handed them off to stable hands and left.  I was the only rider that took care of their own horse because my family didn't have as much money as the others. The houses near the barn were huge, many of them belonging to the kids who rode with me. My house was a little further away, and a lot smaller. They all had their 10 bedroom houses, while I had to share a room with my sister.
"How was it Kelly?" Juan asked me.
"Lets not get into that conversation right now." I said grumpily.
"Don't worry about it, tomorrow will be better." Juan was always supportive of me.
I finished up with Rieley, the horse Ella always had me ride and went into the parking lot to find my bike. I hopped on and sped home.
