Chapter 1
“Kendra, sweetie, please don’t forget to pick up my
dry cleaning after school.” My mother turned to leave the
house. Turning back around, she said, “Oh, and Kendra,
remember to pick up Leah from daycare at 3 o’clock sharp.
If she stays later than that we pay extra.” She turned
around again to head to her car. While she was still facing that
way, she said, “Oh, Kendra…” She turned to
face me and when she saw me holding out her lunch, she smiled
gratefully. She hugged me. “You’ll do great at your
first day of work,” I said while remaining in the hug. I
pulled away, waved good-bye and closed the front door. I ran up
the stairs to get ready for my first day of school. After I was
ready, I looked at the clock. 6:30. I woke up my little sister,
Madison, that shares a room with me. She is three years younger
than me, making her 13 and me 16. I don’t think I got to
properly introduce myself. I am Kendra Brooks. 16 years old. I
love to play soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, softball, basically
any sport imaginably. I don’t have much time for sports
though, since I am way to busy with school, my job at the diner,
babysitting, and taking care of my little brothers and sisters.
So basically helping out my poor, single mom in any way I can. We
just moved to the small town of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, a
few weeks ago. Today is the first day that the kids at my new
school get back from Christmas Break. So today is my first day of
school. “Madison, wake up,” I whispered while I shook
her gently. She awoke. I did the same for the other four of my
siblings. At 7:30, Madison, Trey (15 years old), Peter (14 years
old), Alana (10), and Leah (4), were all downstairs in the
kitchen. I made their lunches and handed them to them. 8:12.
Great, twelve minutes late for me and Trey’s first day of
school. After dropping Peter off at Kennett Middle, Alana off at
Kennett Elementary, and Leah off at preschool/daycare, I finally
drove us to our school. “Sorry, Trey, that your
late.” “Oh, it’s fine Ken. The less school I
have, the happier I am.” he shoot me a smile and we went
our separate ways. I found my 1st period class and slipped in.
The teacher turned. She was short with long gray hair and an
adorable yet wrinkled face. “And who are you?” she
asked smiling. I grinned a little even though I had butterflies
in my stomach for my first day at a new school. “I’m
Kendra. This is my first day here.” “Oh, yes.”
She grabbed a piece of paper off her desk searching it.
“Kendra Brooks?” I nodded. “Great.” She
handed me a textbook. A big textbook. “Welcome to Algebra.
How about you sit there,” she said pointing to an empty
desk in the corner of the room. “Thanks.” I made my
way to the empty desk. I sat down and opened my book to the page
she told the class to turn to. “Hey, you said your names
Kendra?” I looked up to see who was talking to me. I saw an
extremely attractive guy, with wavy brown hair and light piercing
blue eyes. I said shyly, “Yeah.” “Cool.
I’m Blake. Algebra sucks,” he whispered so that we
wouldn’t get in trouble for talking during class. I
grinned. “Tell me about it.” He laughed. “Well,
it’s nice to meet you, Kendra.” The first half of the
day went by very slowly. Then it was lunch. I grabbed my lunch
bag. It was really only a water bottle and a chic-fil-a sandwich.
I told you my mom doesn’t have a lot of money. Neither do I
cause all the money I make from working at the diner and
babysitting, goes to my mom and her taxes and food and stuff. My
mom’s job gets her a bunch of free chic-fil-a sandwiches
for some reason. When I got to the cafeteria, I planned on
sitting at an empty table because I didn’t really know
anyone yet. But before I could even walk towards an empty table
in the back, I heard someone say my name, from behind me. I
turned and found myself face-to-face with Blake. “Want to
sit with me and my friends?” “Uh… sure,”
I agreed, but inside I wondered why he wanted me to sit with him
at lunch. But I couldn’t turn down the offer. We walked
over to a table with kids at it. They were obviously football
players and cheerleaders. Is this the type of guy Blake is?
“Hey, my man,” a blonde guy said to Blake as they did
some kid of handshake. He asked Blake, “Who’s this
chic you got?” He was checking me out. “This is
Kendra. She’s new.” Blake said. He turned to me and
said, “Kendra, this is Jasper.” Me and Jasper just
nodded in acknowledgement “How’d you guys
meet?” another guy asked. Blake responded as we sat down
next to each other, “Algebra. She sits next to me.”
The guy said, “Ah, with Mrs. Fowler. Worst teacher ever. By
the way, I’m Luke. Nice to meet you.” Lunch was the
highlight of my day. The rest was blah. 3 PM came slower than I
wanted it to. After the last bell rang and school was over, I
rushed to my locker, grabbed the books I needed for homework and
rushed out the doors of the school. I ran right into
someone’s chest. Someone much taller than me. I looked up
and recognized those blue eyes. It was Blake. “Your in a
rush,” he said smirking. I looked at my watch. 2:50. I
responded, “Yeah I have to go.” “Why
can’t you stay a little bit longer?” I didn’t
want to tell him that I have to go pick up my brothers and
sisters, get them home, and then get to the diner to work.
“Sorry. Can’t, “ I responded. “See you
tomorrow, walking around him and towards the parking lot. I heard
his footsteps after me and he called my name. I turned to see him
close to my face. “Can I at least have your number?”
I quickly grabbed a pen from my book bag and jotted my phone
number on his arm. “Thanks. Bye, Kendra,” he said. I
waved and ran of to my car in the parking lot. Trey was standing
next to it. “Who’s that guy you were talking
to?” “Don’t go all protective brother on me,
and get in the car,”
Feedback. Comment. Fave... And i need a
