Road To Nowhere

ch. 1 Jazz: When I saw the SUV barreling down the dusty highway being closely chased by two Raider Jeeps, I knew this wouldn't be an ordinary day.

      My name is Jazz Monroe. I'm seventeen and I live with my younger sister-Andrea-,younger brother-Locke, and anyone who can carry their own weight.

      Technically, the world has ended. You can't grow food in the radiated earth and if you stay outside longer than a few hours, you'll suffocate from the gas in the air. Most people who survived the 'apocalypse' went insane from the neural decay of their own minds.

      Unlike my parents. Sixteen years ago, before Andrea and Locke were born, our parents founded this safe haven for anyone who wasn't completely crazy.

      I narrowed my eyes and reached up then pulled the red and black checkered bandana from my face.

      "Locke!" I called to my brother on the platform below. "Hand me Jessie."

      "One second," he replied. The barrel of my sniper rifle-Jessie-poked out from where the latter to the watch tower was. "Here." I reached over and took a hold of Jessie. I balanced her barrel on the slot in the watch towers side and peered through the scope at the driver of the SUV. It was a light haired boy, a terrified look on his flushed face. Probably seventeen. I narrowed my eyes then adjusted Jessie to point at the driver of the first Raider Jeep.

      It was an atypical Raider. Bulky, tattooed, shaved head, and guns strapped here and there. I lined up the shot to be between the eyes, then pulled the trigger.

***

Kane: The car behind me swerved suddenly off the road and rolled in the dust that made up the road banks. The second Jeep did the same, crashing into the first. I gasped and slammed on the brakes, making the car drift to a stop. I sat behind the wheel, a shocked expression on my face. I blinked.

      What was that?

***

Jazz:      "Locke!" I yelled to my brother, standing up and slinging Jessie over my shoulder. "Go find Andrea and Vick. We're going out."

      "Okay," Locke called back and I heard him clambering down the latter. Then, I added as an afterthought,

      "And tell them to bring guns."

preface: Alice

        Half the time, the dreams don't make any sense, but there's always one thing that is forever constant in them.

        The raven.

        It lurks in the shadows of the dreams, nightmares, whatever they are. I just can't seem to get rid of it.

        I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. A little confusing, yes? I thought so. I guess I'll just start at the beginning.

~~~~
        My name is Alice Cinder. I started to have the dreams when... well, when Jay died. Jay was-is my older brother. Not a perfect sibling, but enough for me to love him with all of my little busted up heart.
        Exactly a week before my 17th birthday, he got in a car crash with a drunk. Of course, Jay was killed and the drunk could walk away from the crash, unscathed.
        Aunt Lacey took me to meet that man. The drunk. I just... couldn't look at his stupid face unless it was hurt. So, I swung a fist at him and caught him in the jaw.
        I was screaming as I did it. Crying, too. Right then, I was little more than a twisted up ball of rage, grief and depression. Mostly because, that's the same way my parents had died. Same exact way. Drunk, crash, they died, the drunk didn't.
        I just couldn't believe that it had happened again and that I was utterly alone. After my parents death, Aunt Lacey took Jay and I in and cared for us.
        Lacey has been a family friend since before Jay and I were born. A tall, slender woman with bright, kind blue eyes and a quirky disposition. My mom had said that she was always like that.
        My dad had said if you took Lacey to a cemetery, even the dead would smile.
       After Jay died, Aunt Lacey was more careful with me. Not saying his name or going into his room at her house. I-on the other hand-was always in there. Laying on the bed and crying. Wishing that he would come in any second and yell at me for getting his pillow wet, but then ask me what was wrong.
        "You died."
Ch. 2
 Collin
        My heart stopped. That was the exact moment I fell in love with Ash. When she was diving after a girl she didn't know. There was a moment when both Ash and the girl where in the air. Then, the little girl hit the water with a sickening slap. Ash plunged into the water after her. Everything went silent. No one moved. I don't even think anyone drew breath. I was praying-no, pleading-that Ash would come back to the now glassy surface of the water.
        Then, Ash burst from the water, gasping and sputtering. The little girl in her arms. Everything exploded into movement. People cheered, medics ran. I flew down the concrete steps. A pale, dark-haired woman in a black bikini was taking the girl from Ash.
Ch. 1
Ash
        My name is Ashlynn Hall-Ash for short. I have longish light brown hair, navy blue eyes and dimpled cheeks. My best friend in the entire world is Collin Frost. He has curly gold-bronze hair that I usually have to brush out of his pale green eyes. I knew everything there is to know about Collin and he knows everything about me. Like how he knew I was absolutely terrified of the dark and of heights and how I knew that he hasn't been in a relationship with a girl longer than a week. Not even with the gorgeous Angeline. What I didn't know, was that it was because of me.
. . .
Collin
        It was hard to love Ash. Especially because she had absolutely no idea that I did. That just made it harder whenever she took my hand in hers or pushed the hair out of my eyes. I had known Ash since I was in preschool and we had built our friendship nowhere but up since then. I didn't love her like I do now right from the beginning. I started to notice her around when I was 13. It was her birthday. She was turning 12. Ash's parents were throwing her a party at the pool about a block or 2 away from their house and I was invited. 'Of course you're invited!' Ash would've said. On that day, I started to notice her as more than just my friend. I showed up at the party about 3 minutes late.
         "You came!" Ash cried and threw her arms around my neck, not caring who saw. Because that's the way Ashlynn Hall is.
         "Of course I came," I replied, peeling her off and holding out the brightly wrapped present I had brought. "You're my best friend. Why wouldn't I come?" Ash narrowed her eyes at the gift I continued to hold out to her.
         "What is it?" she asked. I chuckled.
         "Why don't you open it and find out?" I held out the box to her. She raised and eyebrow, but took the box out of my grasp. Instead of opening it, she set it aside on a folding table with maybe 10 or 12 presents stacked on it, then smiled at me. I blinked at her.
        "Come on, let's go off of the top platform," she said, taking my hand. Now, this was before Ash was so terrified by heights. I think this is why she is. Ash dragged me behind her as she scaled the winding stairs to the tall concrete platform that was at least 40 feet in the air. The platform was packed full of people, all waiting on someone I couldn't see.
        Then, there a was scream. Not a scream of surprise or that feeling you get when you ride a loopty-loop on a rollercoaster, this was a scream of pure terror. Plain and simple. You see, the person that everyone was waiting on, was a little girl. Only 5 or 6. What she was doing up there-abandoned in her water wings-I couldn't guess. Apparently, a careless teenager had accidentally ran into her when 1 of his friends shoved him. I looked to Ash, but, Ash wasn't standing there. She was running through the people, shoving some out of her way.
                                            Then, she leapt off of the platform.
preface
        I stayed close to the front door. Just waiting for the party to really kick back up and swing back around. People continued to dance past me like I was a coat rack. I didn't want to be here. I wanted to go home. To go to a quiet place where I could think. To go to my Wonderland. It was too loud here. Too bright. It all made my head ache. I kept my eyes on my shoes and shifted my weight from one foot to the other. Someone touched my shoulder. I stiffened and looked up. My gaze found Collin's pale green eyes, clear and undiluted by anything. In my small hands, I held a Coke. Collin gently took it from me and set it on the couch side table.
         "Collin-" I started.
         "Come on, Ash," Collin said, softly taking my hand. I looked up to him and felt small at his side. It wasn't unusual for Collin to hold my hand, but it was usually when he thought I could get hurt. Here, there wasn't anything that could, not really. I started to wonder where he was taking me as he led me by the hand from where I had sought shelter at the front door. I found myself watching the rebellious goldish-bronze curls at the nape of his neck bounce and twist as he stepped carefully over a dropped drunk on the floor. I maneuvered my way around him and grimaced at the rotten stench of alcohol. I suddenly felt happy that this wasn't my house. Collin tugged me along and stopped momentarily in front of a set of French doors that opened up to an abandoned-looking wraparound porch. Collin bent over and whispered in my ear,
         "Close your eyes."
