Please DO NOT be somebody's back up plan because that sounds like what's happening with A. If he really liked you and deserved you, he wouldn't wait to see if things didn't work out with his girlfriend, he would break up with her for you. Only you, your head, and your heart know if you made the right decision. Just don't be somebody's back up plan or their second choice.
