I agree that some people haven't had such a bad year, but I know personally at least 2 other people besides myself that this last year has been pure for, so when people complain, maybe they truly feel like their year has been horrible..

It sounds like he was more interested in being just friends all along, than being "official", so maybe with this guy, just friends is the best way to go.
