I had such a similar situation. We're no longer together, but that's for a different reason.
Well what I did was instead of getting mad back, I stayed calm, said I understood and such. I brought up the things he's done wrong, making him more upset since he can't realize his faults. Honestly, I think you should talk to him and say that instead of taking it out on you for something so small, talk to you about it and such. Taking a break won't change much and will hurt the both of you.
