chapter 4
--------------------------------------------
"So... Chase. What do you do for fun?" Mave asked the
guy sitting next to her.
"Uhh..." He shook his head like he was snapping out of
a trance. "We go surfing. That's fun."
"Oh... cool." Mave said unenthusiastically.
"We have to go. My mom, uh, said to be home by 9:30." I
said glancing at my phone to make sure I got the time close
enough to right. It was 9. Good.
I could easily lie, just a good trait I got from my dad.
I stood up and dusted the sand off my butt and Mave did the
same.
"See you guys around." I said and we walked back
home.
"That was the most awkward thing ever, Mave." i
said.
"I know, Iknow. You really shouldn't cave in to me. I
have bad ideas." Mave quickly spoke.
We bickered at eachother teasingly all the way home.
"Hey, when Kit comes home, come wake me up. I want to know
how her date went." I told Mave while walking up the steps
to my room.
I still felt car-lagged from my trip, so I wanted to go lay
down.
As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was out like a light.
I woke up in the morning angrily. I wanted Mave to wake me up
when Kit got home!
I stormed down the stairs only to find that no one was home. I
went to the kitchen and looked at the fridge becuase that was
where we agreed to put our "we went out" notes. Sure
enough, there was a note saying that they went out for
breakfast.
I turned around and looked at the clock on the microwave. 10 am.
Perfect time to go to the beach.
I slid into my rainbow bikini and walked down to the beach. It
was so hot, though. On my way there, I was sweating like a dog,
and I'm not the kind of person who sweats. I had to wipe my
face on my towel so much that it was soaked by the time I got
there.
I walked across the boardwalk to the beach and I laid down my
towel. Just as I was laying down, I heard someone call my name. I
moved my gaze up to an attractive guy with blonde hair, green
eyes, tan skin, and abs.
"Aubrey, hey!" The guy said.
"Hey... sorry, but do I know you?" I asked, trying to
not sound like a butt.
"It's Chase, from last night. Am I really so bad that
you forgot who I was over night?"
"Oh... nonono I just didn't recognize you. I'm
really sorry." I looked down at the sand.
"I was just kidding. It's okay, it was dark. Sorry about
last night, being awkward and all. I'm not right around those
guys. They're not my friends, they just invited me to hang
out becuase we have mutual friends.
I let out a sigh of relief.
"It's all good. Don't worry about it." I smiled
at him.
"You wanna go in the water?"
I nodded and we raced out into the blue sparkling sea water.
We swam around, floated, splashed, and jumped waves. It was fun.
I really felt like Chase and I were connecting, even though we
were barely talking, just laughing.
Suddenly, the lifeguard whistles started going off. I snapped my
head towards shore and saw them dancing around. I never saw them
like that before. I got scared. I started swimming towards the
beach as fast as possible.
"Aubrey, stop. Stop right now." I stopped in my tracks.
He was being really serious.
"What's wrong?" I asked, my bottom lip
quivering.
"It's okay. Just let the current take you, it's
getting really strong. Don't fight it, just float.
There's sharks." He calmly said.
I don't know how he was being calm. We could die. I noticed
that the waves died down, thankfully. But then I noticed that we
were far from shore, too. I was going to die, I was going to
die.
I started to float on my back and I closed my eyes. I pretended I
was in a pool, floating on my back, the sun beating on my
stomach. And for a second I actually believed it, until I felt
something on my foot. The shark. I couldn't sit still after
that. I thrashed around and tried to get to the beach.
"Aubrey! Stop!"
And that's the last thing that I heard until I went
under.
-------------------------
I woke up in a dim room. I groaned and rubbed my head. I had a
major headache.
"Aubrey? Aubrey can you hear me?" A familiar voice
asked.
I nodded my head and rubbed my drowsy eyes.
"Where... Am I?" I asked, completely forgetting the
situation.
"Your in the hospital, baby." Kit whispered.
Then everything rushed back into my mind.
I groaned some more.
I opened my eyes and looked at my body. I had a cast on my foot
and my knee was stitched up.
"What happened to me?" I asked Kit.
"The shark brought you under. It snapped the bones in your
foot and cut your knee up pretty bad. I guess you also hit your
head on something, too, becuase you have a minor concussion.
It wasn't too bad, not too bad at all.
A nurse stepped into the dark room.
"Aubrey, you can leave whenever your up to it. You will just
be on crutches for a few weeks, but we fixed your foot enough
that it shouldn't be too long.
Wow, I was lucky to be alive, let alone crutches for only a few
weeks.
I told her thanks and she gave me crutches.
"I'm ready to go, Kit." I told her.
She helped me up and we went outside to her car.
"You know, you had me, Mave, and some guy named Chase
worried sick. All they would tell us was that you were in
surgery, but they didn't say it was just your foot. We
thought it could have been anything. Don't ever do that
again." She rambled on.
"I know, I'm sorry."
