Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 5

After lunch, I began to stress out about hanging out with Bentley. I was having second thoughts about being so close with another guy. I'd had guy friends in the past, but after the incident three months before I began to shut them out until we stopped talking altogether. The majority of me was saying run away as I always had. But there was still a tiny voice pushing me forward. I heard my sister reminding me that I had come to Oklahoma to get away from all my worries. To start over for the summer. I heard my mom begging me to move on from my troubled past. I sighed and began preparing for my date.
Thirty minutes later, I was dressed in light jeans, a blue tank top that matched my eyes and a pair of brown riding boots I borrowed from Aunt Holly. Since we were going to be outside the whole time, I left my long blonde hair in its natural loose waves and my face remained free of makeup. I breathed deeply trying to calm myself down and left the house before I could talk myself out of going.

Bentley's POV
As soon as I finished talking to Allie, I abandoned my work and went to the barn to get the horses ready for us. I brushed Rusty's coat and set up his saddle, then I moved on to Maggie. I was planning on riding Rusty at first and give Allie a chance to ride again on the calm mare. I quickly realized that wouldn't be possible because Maggie was going to need two new shoes before she could go anywhere. I sat down in the hay and frantically racked my brains for any solution I could think of. I decided my options were either postpone the date or we could both ride Rusty. If it was postponed, I didn't know when she would ever agree to something again, but I didn't think she would want to ride double. I could tell it took a lot for her to agree to this date and I knew before I asked that no matter what she would have her guard up more than ever. The last thing she would want was to get on the same horse as me. I was thinking about how I was going to tell Allie our date was canceled when she walked in looking happier than I had ever seen her. When she was happy she looked calm and innocent and with the blonde hair and blue eyes all she needed was wings and she would be the perfect angel.
"Hey Bentley," she said with a shy smile.
"Hey Allie. Look I have some bad news. Maggie needs new shoes. We can't ride her today." I saw her happy expression falter for a second, but before I could say anything it was back.

Allie's POV
It took me a second to process what he was saying. I was a little distracted by the fact that he was wearing his white t-shirt again and now he had added a tan cowboy hat. It was so stereotypical but so perfect. He looked like he had stepped out of an old western movie. Then his words hit me. The mare couldn't ride. That meant one horse and two people. At first I was terrified. I didn't want to be that close to a boy ever again. But I listened to my mother and sister yet again and forced a smile on my face. There was just something about Bentley that made me trust him. I could do this.
"That's ok. Rusty's strong enough for both of us right?"
"Yeah," he smiled and moved toward Rusty. "He's strong enough."
A few minutes later I was perched in the front of Rusty's saddle and Bentley had his arms around me loosely holding his reins. It was awkward at first but then we began talking about everything and anything. He had a way of making me reveal things about myself that I'd barely ever talked about. The only thing I didn't talk about was  Ryan. We rode for hours by a large calm river, past a gorgeous waterfall, through the  corn fields, and everywhere else within a two mile radius of the ranch house. It was perfect. At the end of the night, he took me up into the loft of the barn and opened up the door so we could see the sunset. For the first time in a long time I was genuinely happy. I couldn't help it I scooted closer to him and leaned my head on his arm.
"Thank you for everything today Bentley. I had a really good time." He smiled down at me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
"I did too Allie. I'm glad I could get to know you."
This brought a smile to my face that lasted long after I climbed down from the loft and went back to the house. I knew then that I wanted to see this cowboy again.

Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 4

The next day Aunt Holly was going into town to get groceries and I decided to go with her. I figured if I was going to be here for a while I might as well know how to get around. I also got the feeling Holly wanted to spend some time together when she asked. We got into her rusty blue pickup truck and drove the fifteen or so minutes until we saw some houses and buildings begin to appear. On the way to the grocery store, I noticed a little movie theater that could've come from an old black and white movie as well as a cafe and an ice cream shop. The whole town was so adorably country it actually made me  look forward to the rest of the summer here.
Finally we pulled up to the local grocery store. The sign read Shaw's in large orange letters. We got out and immediately split up each of us with half of her long shopping list. I sighed at the paper in my hand and walked off to pick up cereal. In the cereal aisle, there were no boxes that looked even vaguely familiar. They were all the store brand kind. I was so busy searching the shelves for something I might like that I didn't notice the girl behind me until I backed up into her.
"Oh sorry," she giggled before I could even say anything. The girl was about my age with curly brown hair and chocolate colored eyes. She spoke with a thick southern accent and even wore cowboy boots. Definitely a local.
"Don't worry about it. It's my fault," I replied.
"I don't think I've seen you around. Are you new here?"
"Yeah I'm staying with my aunt for the summer just outside of town."
"Oh! You're Allie Jacobson aren't you? It's so nice to meet you! I'm Heather Andrews by the way," she chirped excitedly. Word travels fast in small towns I thought to myself. Just then, Holly appeared with the cart. I grabbed a couple random boxes and tossed them in.
"Nice to meet you Heather. I should get going."
"Okay but Allie we should hang out sometime. You're gonna need someone to talk to this summer." I nodded and gave her a rare genuine smile as I walked away. I truly did look forward to getting to know her better.

When we got back to the ranch, the first thing I saw was Bentley. His black hair was gleaming in the sun and he was wearing just a white undershirt with his button up flannel shirt draped over his shoulder. When he saw us, he immediately made his way over and went to help us with the bags.
"Hey Allie. What do you say we go riding later today?"I couldn't reply. I was struck speechless momentarily by the way his muscles looked in the tight shirt. His lean body was strong from working the ranch for years. I forced myself to stop staring and coherent thoughts began forming again.
"Uh yeah sure," I managed to get out. "I have to finish unpacking but I should be done around 3."
"Perfect. Meet me at the barn." He set the grocery bags down in the kitchen and walked out of the house. I ran up to my room with a stupid grin plastered on my face. Not only had I made a new friend today, but this adorable cowboy was making an effort to hang out with me. This was the best day I'd had in months. Maybe Oklahoma wouldn't be so bad after all.

AN:So this is the beginning of my first ever story so it would mean a lot to me if you would read and comment please!!I was going to write their date but this is already pretty long so I'll post that tomorrow. Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 3

Bentley's POV:

I walked my roan stallion Rusty into the barn and was just closing his stall when I noticed a pair of green flip flops and long, tan legs poking out from the corner of the barn. I made my way through the hay until I could see a girl who looked to be about my age, sixteen, with long blonde hair sleeping curled up in a tiny ball. I reached over and touched her shoulder shaking her slightly. A dirty barn is no place for a teenage girl to sleep.
When she awoke at my touch, she slowly opened her big blue eyes and seeing me leaning over her began to scream and lash out at me. I jumped back and ran a hand through my dark hair in shock. She calmed down after a moment and her face flushed bright red.
"Oh my goodness I'm so sorry," she stammered. "Did I hurt you? I didn't mean to."
"No no I'm fine," I assured her. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have scared you like that. I'm Bentley. I help Holly around the ranch."
"I'm Allie. Holly's my aunt. Im staying with her for the summer. Her cheeks were slowly returning to their normal color. As she moved forward to shake my hand, I noticed for the first time how tiny she was. The very top of her head just came up to my shoulder and her whole hand barely covered more than my palm. At that moment, Rusty snorted loudly from his stall. Allie skipped over to the door and began stroking his nose. To my surprise, he rubbed against her hand without hesitation.
    "Is he yours, Bentley?"
"Yeah. His name's Rusty. He seems to like you. He's usually bad about strangers."
"I've always had a way with horses," she murmured absently, still moving closer to Rusty.
    "Oh yeah? Do you ride?"
"I used to. It's been years though. I don't even know if I still could."
"I'd be very interested to find out," I said smiling down at her."We should ride together sometime. I'd even let you ride Rusty here." Her face lit up completely. It transformed her features making her look even more beautiful and innocent. But just as suddenly her guard was back up and the smile was gone.
"I don't know-" The rest of her comment was cut off by a call of her name. It sounded like Holly's voice. In an instant Holly was at the doors of the barn.
"Allie! There you are. Dinner's ready'" then she noticed me."Oh, Bentley. I see you've met Allie. She'll be staying here this summer."
"Yes ma'am," I said nodding at her respectfully. I turned to address both of them. "I'd better get out of your way now. I've got work to finish." I didn't wait for their replies but made my way quickly out of the barn knowing without a doubt that Allie would be on my mind for a long time.

Allie's POV:

Thank God Holly showed up when she did. Bentley seemed sweet but then again so did Ryan. The sweetness never lasted. Teenage boys were all the same. But still I couldn't get his bright green eyes out of my mind. There was no question he was good looking. It would take more than a pretty face to earn my trust though. I'd learned the hard way. I followed my aunt back into the house still contemplating his invitation. I was very tempted to go riding. Even if it was with a strange boy. I mean how bad could the sweet cowboy be? I made up my mind to look for him after dinner and tell him I'd do it. I knew without a doubt the butterflies in my stomach would be around for a long time.

Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 2

Aunt Holly met us at the car when we pulled into the long dusty driveway of her ranch. She hugged and kissed both of us then grabbed a suitcase. Mom and I picked up the other two and folled Holly into the house. The house itsself was bigger than I remembered. It was painted white with red shutters and there was a wraparound porch with white rocking chairs outside the front door. Typical southern ranch house. Behind the house I could just see the large red barn and the horses trotting around in the pasture. Holly led us up the stairs into a large bedroom.

"This is where you'll be staying Allie," she chirped placing my bag on the floor. She and Mom left to catch up while I had a look around. The only furniture was a white dresser and a queen sized bed with fluffy white blamkets. The sky blue paint on the walls made the white carpet and furniture look like clouds. There was a walk in closet on the opposite wall from the bed. I unpacked one of my suitcases then made my way back downstairs to see the rest of the house. As I started into the pale yellow kitchen I heard my mother's voice.

"...ever since he did that to her she hasn't been the same. It's tearing our family apart.  Kelly has started to drift away now too. Allie just needs some time to get herself back together." I spun around angrily and ran out of the house. I ran to the barn and threw open the doors. Inside, I began to tear at the hay bales and kick the equipment around. I couldn't believe she was blaming me for all of our family issues. I wanted to scream. Slowly my rage faded into sadness and I curled up in a ball in the corner of the barn and cried until there were no tears left. At some point, my adrenaline was gone and I drifted off to sleep with no desire to go back into the house and face my aunt and mother.

Holly's POV

My sister and I turned when we heard the pounding of footsteps in the hallway. We could just see Allie's long blonde hair disappearing out the door. My heart sank, but Meghan didn't look concerned.
"She'll come back. She always does," she commented matter of factly. I felt anger arise. How could someone not care about their own daughter's feelings? Especially a girl like Allie who had already been through so much pain because of that darn city boy. I knew it was time for Meghan to leave. I was determined to do whatever I could to fix up this broken angel.

Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 1

I woke with a start and realized I was in my mother's minivan. I breathed a sigh of relief and wiped the tears from my cheeks and the beads of sweat from my head as my heart rate slowly returned to normal. It was just a dream I told myself, forcing my breaths to become deeper. But still a voice in the back of my mind argued. It wasn't just a dream, but a nightmare. The same one I'd had every time I closed my eyes since the incident. My parents, friends, and even my therapist kept telling me it would stop but they were wrong. It had been three months since that day and I still couldn't talk about it or even think about it without bursting into tears.

I glanced over at my mom. She hadn't said a word since I awoke, but I could tell from her worried expression and creased brow that she knew exactly what was going on in my mind. And I could tell what she was thinking as well. Though she didn't say it out loud, I knew this episode would convince her further that moving me from my home in Chicago for the summer was the best thing for me. I strongly disagreed, but I knew there was no point in arguing so I shook my long blonde hair out of my face and stared out the window at the scenery that was rapidly changing from familiar skyscrapers to the vast open spaces of the countryside.

As much as I hated to admit it, Oklahoma was beautiful. It was calm and serene, the complete opposite of everything I was used to. But I still maintained the mindset that this summer on my aunt's ranch would be the worst one yet. I had to try one last time to get out of this situation."Mom please turn around. I don't want to do this," I pleaded though at this point we were only two hours away from the ranch and I knew it was hopeless.

"Alison don't be ridiculous. It will be fun. And besides, it'll be good for you to get away from the city. By the end of the summer you'll be back to your old self." She cringed at the last sentence as if she'd said too much. I glared at her though I knew she was right. I had completely changed since the incident. I used to be so innocent and sweet. Now I was critical and I didn't trust anyone, not even myself.

AN:So this is the beginning of my first ever story so it would mean a lot to me if you would read and comment please!! I promise it will get better in the next chapter and eventually you will find out more about the incident. It'll make more sense later. Thanks so much for reading ♥
