chapter 6
I sat there, speechless.
I replayed her words in my head.
"It's not always what you look at Annalise, but what you
see."
What did she even mean by that?
I watched her as she strolled down the beach, lighting a
cigarette, acting totally normal.
I looked back at the boys volleyball game and noticed Will
talking to some girl, flirting it up.
My heart dropped and I was angry.
She comes over here saying, "You're different than the
other girls he likes, he acts shy around you, he likes you, blah,
blah, blah."
She got my hopes up and I actually believ- who am I kidding? She
didn't even know me! And she has no idea if he liked me by
one glance.
That Piper chick was crazy.
I pushed myself up, and shook my head, clearing out my thought,
and forgetting everything that just happened.
I spotted Eliza making her way up to the parking lot.
I sprinted after her, and tapped her shoulder. She jumped and
spun around, facing me. When she looked into my eyes, she
relaxed. Then she glared at me.
"Jesus. You scared me. What?"
I ignored her rude response and replied,
"Why are you leaving?"
She rolled her eyes and said in an icy tone, " 'Cuz I
want to."
I placed my hand on her shoulder and she brushed it off, looking
disgusted.
"Come on. Please stay."
She shrugged and said, "No."
With that she turned, and walked to her car, hopping in, and
drove off.
I sighed, wondering why she hated me. I was just trying to be
friendly. I've been here for like, 2 hours, and I've
already made an enemy. Great first impression Annalise.
I walked down the hill and joined the group again, and they all
greeted me, asking where I was.
"You know, just walking around. Getting to know the
place."
Chelsea smiled and Alex asked, "Meet anyone?"
I thought back to crazy Piper, and debated if I should tell
them.
"Nope," I responded.

chapter 5
After a while I got bored and ditched the
group.
I started walking down the beach, and stared out at the water,
the sun setting on the people swimming, surfing, doing chicken
fights, having the time of their life.
I wish I could join in like I had known them forever.
Everyone, well mostly everyone, was friendly and welcoming here,
so I could, but it was me that stopped myself from doing it.
I sighed and ran a hand through my long hair, and kept
walking.
I noticed some boys playing volleyball, and I decided to sit down
and watch them. I spotted Will, in the back, first position,
ready to spike.
I studied him as the ball went over the net and he lifted his
perfectly muscular arms, slamming it down on the other side.
His team mates ran up to him, slapping him on the back, fist
bumping.
I put my head in my hands and leaned on my elbows, admiring him
from afar.
I was startled when someone said,
"He's hot, isn't he?"
I turned and a girl with brown hair that fell to her hips was
sitting next to me, her legs crossed, and she was also watching
him.
She inclined her head, facing me.
"That was rude of me. Let me introduce myself. I'm
Piper. Are you new here?"
I nodded and responded, "Yeah, how'd you know?"
"It's a small town. I know a new face when I see
one."
"I see. Well my name's Annalise."
"Nice to meet you," she said, smiling at me.
"You've probably heard this before, but your eyes are
absolutely gorgeous! They are bluer than the ocean!"
I beamed and thanked her.
"Thank you. And believe it or not, you're the first
person here to comment on them. They are the only...thing about
me that stands out."
Her grin died down a bit and she assured me, "Well first of
all, you're new. That stands out. Second, you're
gorgeous. Third, I don't talk to people who look like bores.
That's why I came over here. Finally, Will doesn't seem
to think so."
I completely forgot why I was sitting here, and I spun my head
around and locked eyes with Will, who appeared to be staring at
me. He looked away quickly and seemed....embarassed?
"I'm no genius with boys, but Will is so outgoing and
he's mr.popular, flirts with every girl, but he seems so shy
around you. You are definitely different than the other girls he
has liked."
I smiled at the thought of Will having feelings for me, but my
thought wqs immediately taken over by reality. I have barely
known this girl for 5 minutes, she knows nothing about me, and
she says I'm different?
I shrugged and responded to her statement, "Well, I
don't even know him or anything about him. I haven't even
had a real conversation with they guy! He has really only looked
at me."
I threw my hands in the air, proving a point.
A corner of her mouth twitched and as she was getting up to
leave, she added one more thing.
"It's not always what you look at Annalise, but what you
see."

chapter 4
We made our way over to a group of people
who were laughing, holding red solo cups in their hands. They all
looked so happy and welcoming.
"Hey guys! This is Annalise. She just moved here from
Maine," she announced.
They all turned towards me, and I could feel my face burning.
"Hi," I said in my friendliest tone.
They all smiled and introduced themselves.
"I'm Camile," said a petite brunnette.
"I'm Tari," remarked a redhead with long legs.
Chelsea beamed and shot her finger up.
"Oh, and don't forget Eliza!"
A tall girl with long, dirty blonde hair, glanced over at us. She
seemed kind of... distant from everyone, and seemed quiet
compared to the rest. She also looked like someone you didn't
want to mess with.
I grinned and said, "Nice to meet you."
She rolled her eyes, and strutted away, making her way over to
the coolers.
Camile gave me a sincere look and Tari stated,
"She'll warm up to you. I promise."
I nodded and looked down, wondering what was wrong with me. I
didn't want any enemies my first day.
A boy with brown hair, and green eyes approached me. He looked
like your classic lax bro, with his hat backwards, pinne with no
shirt on underneath. At least he had abs.
He bent down on his knee, and grabbed my hand, kissing it.
"Carter. It's a pleasure to meet such a beautiful woman
like you."
Everyone in the group laughed. I could already tell within 5
seconds of knowing the guy, he was the life of the party.
I noticed Eliza, with a sad expression on her face, looking over
at us.
I was about to go over and comfort her, when a blond guy pushed
Carter, and held his hand out.
"I'm Alex. Carter's a flirt. And a loser. Every girl
he sees he tries to get it on with."
Carter stomped his foot and yelled defensively, "I do
not!"
Everyone rolled their eyes as a tan girl with long black hair
walked by in a string bikini.
Carter checked her out, drooling and yelled, "Adios
amigos," and tried to catch up to her.
We all laughed, except for Eliza, who watched them intently.
Something was up with this girl. And I wanted to know.

chapter 3
When I arrived home I told my parents about
the party and they were just as thrilled as I was.
"Of course you can go honey! We want you to feel like this
is your home."
I smiled and assured her,"It already does mama."
I wrapped my parents in a group hug, and my dad ruffled my
hair.
My golden retriever, Sunny, came over and started barking at
us.
"Can't forget Sunny," my dad joked.
I pulled away and knealt down, kissing her on th nose, and
petting her head. "How could I?"
I stood up and made my way over to my room.
I glanced in and it wasn't exactly comfortable yet. There
were boxes piled up, and I hadn't designed it yet the way I
wanted it to look like.
I searched through the boxes and found the one I was looking
for.
Labeled on top in red sharpie it read, "Swimsuits."
I ripped it open, and picked out the one that looked best. I
wanted to make a good first impression.
I slipped on a salmon colored bikini, and threw my hair up in a
ponytail.
I scanned the room for looking for a pair of shorts, and noticed
a white pair lying on my bed. I slid them on, and also threw a
navy, off the shoulder t-shirt over my head.
I slipped my toes through my toes through my rainbows, and
checked myself in the mirror.
I didn't exactly feel like a california girl, but I sure
looked like one.
I checked the time, and I was about ready to leave. I sprinted
out the door, and yelled goodbye to my parents.
I hopped on my bike and headed to the boardwalk.
Before I even parked my bike, I noticed a bunch of teenagers on
the beach, doing everything Chelsea said they would.
I gulped nervously, and scanned the boardwalk.
I spotted Chelsea and Will at the ice cream shop waiting for me,
just like they said they would be.
I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and made my way
over.
Once I approached them Chelsea turned and grinned, running up to
me, embracing me in a bear hug.
"I'm so glad you could make it! Everyone's dying to
meet you!"
I laughed and replied, "I'm sure they'll
live."
I glanced at Will who was staring at the beach, itching to
go.
I was a tad upset he hadn't said hello, because I thought I
looked really good. It was mostly for him honestly. Chelsea
looked me up and down and said,
"You look adorable! You'll fit right in!"
I smiled and thanked her. At least someone noticed.
"Really? Thanks! You too!"
And she did. She had her brown wavy hair, pulled to the side in a
fishtail braid, and she was wearing a navy and red striped
bikini, ripped jean shorts, and a white tanktop.
She beamed and grabbed my wrists, dragging me to the beach.
"You ready," she asked.
I nodded, and she lead the way.

chapter 2
" Welcome to California
Annalise."
I smiled, replaying those four friendly words in my head. I think
I had made my frist friend! And this fast! In 2 minutes someone
reached their hand out to me, literally, and at my old school,
that I went to for 2 years, no one would even bother giving me a
minute of their day.
"Thank you Chelsea," I replied in a warm tone.
She grinned and pulled me in for a hug. I was already feeling the
love.
"Hey! Let me introduce you to my brother! The one that hit
you."
The last part she said while rolling her eyes.
"Will! Come 'ere!"
I glanced past Chelsea and saw a boy who looked about my age
jogging up to us. Once he got closer, I took a good look at him.
Brown hair that fell over his green eyes, tan, well-built, little
freckles scattered across his face, and the abs. Oh my. He was
perfect. You never saw boys like that in Maine. I looked back and
forth between both of them. They looked very alike.
"Will, this is Annalise, the girl you hit with the
football."
He put his hand behind his neck, and looked down.
"Sorry 'bout that," he mumbled.
"It's ok. I'm fine."
He lifted his head, and looked into my eyes. I turned in the
other direction, hiding the fact my face was probably as red as a
tomato.
"She moved up here from Maine! How cool is that? We're
gonna have to get you used to the warm, huh?"
I nodded and laughed a little. Well it came out more like a,
"Hmph."
I looked at Chelsea, then at Will, who was intently looking at
me. My stomach started doing little flips, and my face was
burning. But that was probably the sun, hitting my pale face.
Will added, "Is California that different than
Maine?"
I shook my head up and down.
"Well, yes. Maine is colder, and more, well, woodsy.
There's many trees, lakes, animals. Perfect place for fishers
or hunters."
Will put his thumb under his chin, and nodded.
Chelsea piped in and said, "Well Annalise, how about tonight
you come with me, Will, and the gang, whom you will meet, to the
night swim tonight?"
I raised my eyebrows, oblivious to what she meant.
"Every Saturday night all the teens from the high school
come to the beach and go swimming, throw concerts, drink, play
games, have a bonfire, you name it!"
It would be nice to start school off with a nice group of
friends.
"I'd love to," I replied with an excited ring to my
voice.
Chelsea beamed and clapped her hands.
"Awesome! Meet us at the ice cream shop tonight at around
8!"
Will looked amused, and started playing with the sand, using his
feet.
"See you then," I waved to them as they started walking
away.
Will looked back at me one last time, and he left me there
anxious to see him again.

chapter 1
I blew a strand of blond hair out of my
face, and kicked off my flip flops. I looked ahead of me and took
in the beautiful scenery. The long boardwalk with tiny little
shops and venders, surrounded by people of all ages. The beach
with the waves crashing down on the shore. Figures lying down on
the sand. Children making sandcastles. Teenagers surfing. Nothing
at all like Maine, which was cold, and didn't have as much
people. Maine was fun if you didn't mind shoveling snow all the
time.
When my father announced we were moving to sunny California, I
didn't know what to expect. I was so used to the cold, and
wearing mittens and winter coats, not shorts and bikinis. I
wasn't exactly the most popular person at my school, and I didn't
have a boyfriend, so I couldn't be missing out on anything
leaving. It was a chance to start fresh. Make a new person out of
myself. I started walking, feeling the hot powdery sand beneath
my feet. I made my way down to the water, and dipped my feet in.
The water was cold, but not freezing. It was refreshing. I closed
my eyes, and took in the feeling.
My thoughts were interrupted when I heard a voice behind me yell,
"Duck!" I spun around, and was struck by a football in the center
of my forehead. I fell backwards into the water, and put my hand
on my head. Everything was spinning, and I saw a character walk
up to me, and hold out their hand. I tried to grab the hand, but
it looked like there were so many.
"You idiot! She can't even see right," said a girl that seemed to
be about my age. "Hey. I'm so sorry. My brother and I were
playing football and he has horrible aim."
I shrugged and she grabbed my hand, and pulled me up. I stumbled
a little, and she helped me regain balance. I shook my head and I
began to see things clearly now. The girl was looking at me with
a worried expression.
She had wavy brown hair that hit mid-back, and had a toned, tan
body. A light sprinkle of freckles covered her nose, and she had
bright green eyes. She looked like she belonged here. Unlike
pale, blond, blue-eyed me.
I waved my hand. "It's ok. I'm fine. It was an accident."
She smiled and replied, "Oh thank gosh! I'm glad you're ok. I've
never seen you here before. Are you visiting?" I shook my head
and answered, "No. I actually just moved here. I used to live in
Maine."
Her green eyes sparkled and she responded in an excited tone,
"Yay! My name's Chelsea. You'll love it here. I definitely do." I
grinned and stuck out my hand. "Thank you. My name's Annalise."
She grabbed my hand, and shook it.
She showed off her pearly whites and said, "Welcome to California
Annalise."
