Heartbeats & Lullabies
chapter 6: Muddy Shorts

I danced for a little bit, but mainly just watched Maddi. She definitely goes sick at parties. She even jumped up on a table and danced, causing many wolf whistles and cheers.
I snuck away after awhile, getting a headache from the heat and noise. I quickly walked outside and sighed in relief at the fresh air. I decided to just walk around outside for a bit, until my head settled. The dew on the grass brushed my feet, making me shiver. I stepped past the bush where Maddi parked, kicking a pebble. I turned around the bush quickly, and was hit by a hard figure. I stumbled back in surprise, falling on my butt in the grass. The tall figure chuckled, stepping out of the shadow of the bush and into the front porch light. I could make out his eyes, which were glittering with amusement, covered by tousled brown hair.
I was too busy looking at his shadowed face to see he was holding his hand out to help me up. I slowly put my hand in his, and he roughly pulled me to stand.
“Thanks.” I said quickly, stepping back.
“You should really watch where you’re walking. If I was drunk or something that could have been messy.” He said in a low tone.
“Yeah. Got it.” I said, annoyed. Who was he to tell me to watch where I was walking? He was the one creepily standing behind a bush..
“So you don’t like parties either I assume?” He asked, motioning to the house.
“Not really.. not anymore..”  He looked at me with a confused expression.
“Anymore?”
“Yeah. Uhh anyways.. I should go back inside.” I said quickly, turning on my heels.
I took a couple steps before I heard his voice again.
“Uh..miss?” He chuckled, “You’re pants are all muddy..”
I looked over my shoulder to see that he was right- my shorts had a big mark from when I fell. I cursed under my breath. I can’t go back inside now!
I suddenly felt a warm hand on my back, pushing me towards the house.
“Come with me, I can get you something.” The boy said as we walked across the yard.
He led me up the stairs and down the hallway, opening a white door at the end of the hall. I stepped into a very pink room, with sparkly things all over.
“This is my sisters room, you’ll probably fit into her shorts or something.” He said, opening a drawer and pulling a pair of dark denim shorts out.
“You live here?! Is this your party?” I asked, taking the shorts from him.
“Yes, I live here. But no, this is my sister’s party. You’ve probably seen her. She’s wearing an incredibly short black dress.. Her names Lily.” He explained.
I nodded, looking at the shorts he gave me.
The boy looked at me awkwardly and shifted his weight,
“Well uhh..the bathroom is right there to change..”
I nodded again and turned around to walk to the bathroom.
“By the way, may I ask your name? I’m sure my sister will want to know who stole her shorts.” He winked at me and smirked.
I stuttered briefly, like I didn’t know my own name.
“It’s uh- uh..Cameron.” I felt myself turning slightly red.
He smiled and held out his hand for me to shake. His dark blue eyes looked at me with interest.
“Nice to meet you, Cameron. I’m Will.”

chapter 5: Party Animal

She ignored my reaction and immediately went to my closet.
“Ready?! I’m so excited this is gonna be sooo funn you’re gonna look so good and-“
“MADDI! Breath!” I interrupted her babbling. Her tanned cheeks turned pink.
 “Sorry..”
Her quietness didn’t last long as she began looking through my closet again, dropping a pair of tan shorts and a white flowy shirt with sequins on it.
  “How’s that?” She said happily.
I smiled a little to myself. I had bought that shirt for a special occasion, even though I never went anywhere.
“Good.” I smiled reassuringly to her.
She squealed like a little girl.
“Ohmygosh! This is gonna be awesome! I’m so so excited!”
I chuckled at her childishness.
“I can see that!”
Maddi blushed a light shade of pink and sat down.
“Sorry..”

Most of the afternoon passed and it was time to go to the party. I checked myself in the mirror one last time before following Maddi to her car. I was wearing the outfit Maddi picked out, along with dark brown sandals. My long brown hair fell in loose curls, framing my face. I hopped down the steps and out the door with Maddi, jumping into the passenger seat. She sang happily to the radio that blasted “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida. I sat quiet, looking out the window.
“Is everything okay?” Maddi asked between songs.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I said smiling at her. She gave me an unsure look before focusing back on the road. Honestly, I felt guilty. I hadn’t been to any parties since Aaron..uh..passed.

We pulled into a huge stone driveway that led to an equally large house. Lights flashed and the bass boomed from inside.
  “Whose house is this anyways?”

Maddi knocked loudly on the wooden door. It swung open and I was blasted with heat and the smell of alcohol. Maddi smiled and pulled me inside, weaving through a crowd of drunken dancing kids. I used to like to party. I used to drink and get a little crazy sometimes. But it was like when Aaron died, the crazy, careless part of me died too..
“Where are we going?” I yelled from behind Maddi, as we continued dodging people.
“Kitchen!” She chirped. We entered the kitchen, which had all sorts of bottles on the table and plastic cups strewn about. Maddi pulled 2 cups out of a bag and filled them up.
“I-I don’t want any..” I said warily. She smiled and only filled mine half way.
“At least drink this. You wont have any fun unless you’re at least buzzed.
I sighed and took the cup from her manicured hand. I smiled unsure at her and took a sip. The cold beer stung my throat, but I ignored it.
“Lets go dance!” Maddi squealed, grabbing my wrist and pulling me into the crowd of kids.

chapter 4: Flashbacks

“Honey? What would you like for breakfast?” My mother asked me from the kitchen. I lay quietly on the vanilla white couch, playing with Aaron’s bracelet. It’s been 7 months and 10 days since he died. I never take it off. Besides the haunting dreams that visit me every night, it’s all I have from him. I could still remember that stupid smile on his face when he gave it to me…

I sighed deeply with satisfaction after taking a sip of my iced coffee- extra extra sugar, just how I liked it.  Aaron and I were sat on “Lacey’s Boardwalk” which was about 20 minutes from my house. I dangled my feet carelessly as we talked about random things. Aaron took my hand and traced the lines on my palms with his finger. I giggled at the feeling. His finger stopped moving as I noticed his gaze was fixed on my wrist.
“What’s that?” He asked quickly, although he could probably figure out what the scars were..
“Nothing. Just a fall..” I said, nonchalantly taking my arm away.
“In straight lines? Cam, don’t lie about that.” He said sternly.
“I don’t do it anymore. I promise.” I said, looking up at his worried face.
He began untying his bracelet that he made from guitar strings, then took my hand and looped it around my wrist.
“Aaron, you don’t have to give this to me.” I felt stupid – like he was giving his bracelet to me out of pity.
He grinned like a child with a great idea, “Well, just in case. If you ever feel that way again, remember you’re wearing this.. and that I’m here for you.”

“Cameron?” My mother’s voice rang again, as I realized I hadn’t answered her.
“I’m not hungry. Thanks.” I spoke softly, lifting myself from the couch.
“Maddi wants me to go meet her at the beach. I’ll be home later.”
My mother sighed, and nodded before taking another bite of her toast.
I walked up to my bedroom and threw a gray baggy sweatshirt on, along with white shorts, leaving my wavy hair down around my shoulders. I didn’t put any makeup on, since there wasn’t much for me to do with my plain gray eyes. Aaron always told me that my eyes were beautiful, and different; I never believed him.
I took a deep breath as I lightly kicked the soft sand with my feet, pushing my hair away from my face as it twisted in the wind. It wasn’t long before I spotted a girl with raven black hair walking along the water with her dog. Maddi always took her puppy to the beach in the morning, and I usually met her here.
Noticing me walk towards her, she smiled and ran a hand through her hair, throwing it in loose curls on her back.
“Cammy!” She beamed, as her dog came bounding towards me. I greeted him and continued towards Maddi, who gave me a hug before we began walking along the water again.  She chatted excitedly for a good 10 minutes, like she always does.
“So yeah and he wants me to go to this party with him tomorrow night at his friends house. Oh Cam you should come with me!” She said quickly, nudging my shoulder.
Like my usual answers, I looked at her apologetically.
  “I don’t think so Maddi…Parties aren’t really my thing..”
Maddi pouted her lips.
“Pleeeaaassee? It wont be any fun without you! You were always the life of the party!” She persisted, throwing a stick far in front of us for her puppy to fetch.
“Yeah… I was.” I replied.  Only when I was with Aaron..
“Maybe you can be again! It’ll be fun, I promise! If not I’ll never ask you to come with me ever again!”
I sighed in defeat, “Fine.. Just this time though!”
Maddi squealed, wrapping her arms around my shoulders.
“This is gonna be soooo fun! Oh my gosh! I’ll come over tomorrow and we’ll pick out what to wear!”
I chuckled at her girlyness.

chapter 3: Regret

It's weird how quickly everything can change. Something crazy happens and 20 seconds later you end up like me, sobbing in a pathetic heap outside your boyfriends hospital room...and you're the reason he might die.
Why was i so stupid? I shouldnt have ran across the street like that. I should have seen the car coming.
“Uhh, miss? You can see him.. We have to tell you something..” A doctor said gently, pulling me away from my thoughts.

“Is he gonna be okay?” I asked quickly, silently begging him to give me the answer I wanted. The way he awkwardly shifted a clipboard in his arms said different, though. I took a quivering breath as I stood up and quickly walked into the room where Aaron was. I gasped when I saw his condition. I thought I was going to vomit right there, but I pushed the feeling away. I had to be with him now.
I kneeled down next to his bed, lightly holding his hand. His ghostly white face was covered in crimson blood. White-mixed-with-yellow-parchment-paper sheets covered his broken body. His eyes fluttered open, revealing those innocent eyes I loves so much. I squeezed his hand, jerking away quickly when he groaned in pain.
“Aaron... I’m so so sorry. This is all my fault.” I tried to hold back sobs. He smiled weakly at me.
“It’s okay. I couldn’t live with myself if I let you get hit.”
His arm slowly raised, and I closed my eyes as he pushed my hair out of my face and traced his warm fingers on my cheek.
I took a deep breath to calm myself.
“I..I love you.. you have to be okay.” My voice shook nervously.
He smiled again, before closing his eyes, as he whispered.
 “I love you too… forever.”
Suddenly the heart monitor began beeping frantically. More and more tears spilled down my cheeks. A bunch of doctors and nurses rushed into the room, shoving me to the back, and out the door. Aaron’s mother ran in screeching. I fell into a heap at the door, the rest off the hallway was silent, as if everyone knew…I cried by the door, listening to the heart monitor in the room-Its robotic, emotionless tone.
Faster…
Faster…
Flat.

chapter 2: Blame

3 months later...

I pushed myself up to the white plaster walls as I slid to the floor, exhaling as I rested my head on my knees. This could not be happening. It’s entirely my fault. I was going to marry that boy, for god’s sake! He’s everything I wanted, he couldn’t be replaced by anyone… And I ruined it.
“Where is he? Where’s my baby!?” I heard a woman’s shrill voice yelling from down the hallway. I immediately knew whom it belonged to.  I looked up, and through my blurry vision I could see Aaron’s mother frantically running towards me. She ran pretty awkwardly with her black pencil skirt and high heels. She was always much more uptight and fancy than Aaron ever was. I remember how he always complained about the ostentatious parties she would drag him to so he could meet people that work with big rich companies.
“It’s just not my thing,” He would say, “I just wanna worry about now. I don’t want to be known as some rich woman’s son everywhere I go.”
Mrs. Camden stopped running and briskly walked over to where I sat.
“Where is he?!”
I took a deep breath, and answered with a quivering voice.
“H-he’s in there. Nobody’s allowed to see him yet.” I tried my best to hold back the tears that continuously spilled over my cheeks.
“You know, this is all your fault. If you hadn’t been a little idiot and stopped in the road, my boy wouldn’t be dying.”
With her accusation I burst into pathetic sobs again.
“I KNOW! It’s my fault! I-I’m so sorry! Believe me I wish I was in that bed instead of him!” I cried harder, pressing my forehead to my knees again. Mrs. Camden never liked me. I remember overhearing her tell Aaron that I wasn’t “classy” enough for him. He never listened though, assuring her that I had more class than any of her friends. Her face was priceless when he told her that. A tear cascaded down my cheek, leaving a dark mark on my jeans as I heard Aaron’s mother’s heeled shoes click-clack away. I sniffled as I repeated the accident in my head.

“You don’t understand! You’re not listening to me!” I cried as I stomped out of the coffee shop. I didn’t care that the people on the busy street were watching us. The sun was setting, turning the street a light pink.
“Cameron, why is this a huge deal?! I got into the college of my dreams! Why can’t you just be happy?” He yelled, his perfect features contorted with anger..
“Because you didn’t tell me until now! And it’s on the other side of the country!” He looked at me with an apologetic expression. I knew that if I stood there any longer I would give in, so taking in a quick breath, I turned and ran across the road. I didn’t care that there wasn’t a red light, or that this street was so busy. I just needed to get away from him for now. I need to think.  As I was almost to the other side I heard a car horn.
“CAM! WATCH OUT!” Aaron’s low voice yelled, as I was shoved onto the curb of the street.
The car horn blared.
Tires screeched.
And suddenly I was staring at Aaron, lying motionless on the pavement.

Heartbeats & Lullabies
chapter 1: Forever?

“Alright, truth or dare?”
“Dare!” He answered quickly.
“Okay, I dare you to put 10 marshmallows in your mouth at once!” I giggled, throwing a bag of marshmallows at Aaron’s chest. He looked up at me with a playful smile.
“Challenge accepted.” He said as he proceeded to stuff the marshmallows in his mouth. 1..2….5…8.. I started laughing, because his cheeks were huge. He ended up laughing too, causing the marshmallows to spill out of his mouth, and we laughed even harder. His laugh made me happy. He was one of those kids that could look beautiful no matter what he did, even with his chipmunk cheeks filled with marshmallows. His dirty blonde hair fell perfectly just above his eyes. He flashed a perfect innocent smile at me.
“Challenge failed..”
I giggled,
“Before you ask, I choose truth.”
“Alright, uhh, if you could make sure one thing happened in your life, what would it be?”
I thought for a moment.
“I’d marry the boy of my dreams.” I smiled sweetly at him. He grinned and took my hand.
“If that boy is me, I don’t think we’ll have a problem with that.”
I smirked, “When did I say it was you?”
His smile dropped and was replaced with a pout. “Oh..”
I giggled and kissed his cheek.
“Of course its you!”

Once we finished the game we picked up the marshmallows and I plopped back on the couch, lightly closing my eyes. It was nearly midnight, and I was beginning to feel the effects of our childish games. I felt Aaron appear next to me, sliding his body under mine so that I was lying on his chest. I snuggled into his shirt, taking in the sweet scent of his cologne. He began singing my favorite song, “You & Me”, slowly and softly, just loud enough for me to hear it. His voice was warm and flowing like hot chocolate, and everyone seemed to relax when he had something to say. But as soon as he became angry, the hot chocolate would freeze and his voice would become like ice, cold and hard, and his eyes seconded the notion. But luckily, it wasn’t often he had that emotion. As his voice coaxed me into a comforting sleep, he gently brushed his warm, pink lips against my cheek, his lean fingers moving my long brown hair from my ear as he whispered,
“Happy 3 year anniversary baby, I love you so much.” His warm breath tickled my ear. My lips twitched upwards as I turned to him, looking into his milk chocolate eyes.
“Forever.”

How to Make a Girl Fall in Love
Chapter 6. Secrets

The kids all came in and put alot more than just orange juice on the table. I decided to take a walk around the beach- I wasn't really that hungry. I took a deep breath as my feet came in contact with the warm sand.
"BABY!" I heard someone yell behind me. I could pick out that voice anywhere. I turned around and saw Dalton jogging through the backyard to me.
"I saw you walk out. You okay?" He smiled his childish smile. I gave him a reassuring smile,
"Yeah I'm fine..."   He tilted his head, watching me intently.
"Did Kendall say something to you? She seemed extra 'excited'" He asked, quoting "excited" with his fingers.
"Well...she told me that I shouldnt be here.. I don't know what that means.." I trailed off, kicking some sand into a pile with my feet. I looked up at Dalton, who was looking at the sand with a confused look.
"Uhh..yeah..I'm not sure what she's talking about.." We stood in silence for acouple seconds before he nudged my arm.
"C'mon, race you inside!" He flashed a smile before dashing off the beach. I rolled my eyes and jogged behind him.
                                                                   ...

“Lexi! You went last the other night. You go first now.” I sighed, trying to decide between picking truth or dare. I chickened out and picked truth again. Josh was asking me.  He thought for a moment before I spoke
“Its an easy one, remember.” I said, hoping he wouldn’t ask for anything embarrassing.
“Fine..umm.. When’s your birthday?” He finally asked. It was an easy question, but I still didn’t want to answer it.
“Uhhh…December…umm…fifteenth?”  I said, which sounded more like a question than an answer. I mentally slapped myself for sounding like I didn’t know my birthday. They’ll know I’m lying.
“You sure about that?” Luke chuckled, wrapping his arm around my waist.
I felt myself blushing, like I always do when I lie.
“Yeaahh…” I said, trying to cover my blush.
“Really, when’s your birthday? I picked an easy one for you.” Josh said.

I sighed.
  “Tomorrow..”
  Everyone’s faces lit up.
“Tomorrow?!” Rachel asked incredulously.  I nodded.
“But I don’t want anyone doing anything for it. Okay?” I said, scanning everyone’s faces. I ended on Luke, who was giving Dalton a mischievous look. I nudged him in the stomach.
“Okay??” I repeated. He smirked, looking at Dalton once more.
 “Okay. No celebration.”
And so we continued the game.

How to Make a Girl Fall in Love
Chapter 6. Secrets

I woke up panting, as I sat up and looked around the room. I squinted my eyes at the sunlight that was spilling out from between the curtains. It was just a dream. I’d been having almost the exact same dream on and off for years now, and it still woke me up screaming some nights.
I shuddered at the thought, the vividness of the dream flashing in my head. I pushed the thoughts out of my head the best I could, flipping the wrinkled sheets off of my legs.
I sleepily walked through the hallway, peering into a couple rooms. Nobody was around. They must all be in the kitchen..
I stepped into the kitchen, taking in a sharp breath at the coldness of the tiles on my feet. I looked around the room, and out the front window. Kellen’s car was missing too. Where was everyone?
As if on cue, a girl’s voice answered, “Everyone went out to get orange juice.” I jumped, spinning on my heels. I didn’t hear anyone in the living room.
“Oh..okay..h-hi.” I said, to Kendall, still startled. She looked at me with the same blank expression she had around me since we met, ignoring my greeting. I awkwardly looked around the room and back at Kendall, who had her gaze fixed on me.
“I’m uhh…gonna go get changed..” I said, quickly turning and making my way back to the bedroom.  Why did she make me so uncomfortable?

I walked back into the kitchen wearing blue denim shorts and a flowing beige tank top, a long heart necklace hanging around my neck. I left my hair natural, since it was pretty straight. It was a little after 12:00. I grabbed a pop tart out of a box on the counter and walked into the living room, where Kendall was watching tv. I hopped down the little ledge into the room, and Kendall looked me up and down, giving me a funny look.
“What?” I asked, consciously looking over my outfit. She continued giving me that look until she looked up at my face, and faked a smile.
“Nothing!” She said, crossing her legs and looking at her phone. We sat in silence for around 10 painful minutes. Does she hate me? What did I ever do to her?
“Did I make you mad or something?” I blurted out, regretting it as soon as I said it.
Kendall giggled, running a hand through her long hair.
“Not really. But lemme just tell you that you shouldn’t be here.” She smiled sweetly at me, which made me angry.
“Why not? They’re my friends too. I didn’t do anything bad to you.” I said quickly, staring at her.
  “Well…the thing is that-“
“WE’RE BAAAACCKK!” Someone yelled from the front door. Kendall didn’t finish her sentence.
“In hereee!” Kendall sang. I gave her an angry/confused look, and she just smiled, jumping up and skipping to the kitchen. Why wasn’t I supposed to be here?!

How to Make a Girl Fall in Love
Chapter 5. (Part 2) Truth or Dare.

It was nearly 10 o'clock when we began to head inside, quietly chattering as we filed into the kitchen. Everyone hung their towels up on chairs, changed, and scattered into their bedrooms. I said goodnight to everyone and moved down the hallway to my room.
I quietly opened my door to see Luke laying on his bed staring at the ceiling. He didn't notice me come in, so I crept up and put my hands on his eyes, ruffling his hair. He grunted with surprise when my hands came in contact to his face, and tried to move away from me, but couldnt. Finally, I let go of him and looked at him, giggling. He looked at me, his eyes wide, then narrowed at me, smirking.
"Nobody. Noooobody. Messes up my hair and gets away with it!" He said evilly, quickly swinging his legs off the bed. I laughed and sprinted over to the closet on the other side of the room, and said
"Awwww dont be such a girll!".
I threw my hand on the handle and swung the door open. As soon as I was about to step in i felt Luke's arm around my waist, lifting me and and flinging me onto my bed. Before I could get up I felt Luke's body heat hovering over me. He spoke  in a low tone, "What'd you sayy?" His face was just inches from mine, getting closer by the second.  I tried not to ger caught up in it, and said
"I said you shouldnt be-" I choked on my words, bursting into laughter.
"Luke! S-stop! I c-cant breath!" I laughed, trying to stop his hands from squeezing my sides. He chuckled,
"What did you say about me? I didn't quite hear that." He continued tickling me, as I continued squirming uncontrollably under him.
"Nothing! N-nothing! I p-promise! Stopp!" I panted, as he moved his hands from my stomach and placed them on both sides of my head. He leaned closer to my face. I could feel his breath on my face. I picked up my head alittle, closing my eyes. I waited for our lips to touch...sooo closee...
"Go to sleep Lex." He chuckled, pushing off my bed and walking to his. I sighed, feeling the adrenaline die down, and slipped under the white sheets.
Did I want to kiss him? More importantly, did he want to kiss me? Was he even going to? I turned to my side and was asleep in a matter of seconds.

'I woke up that night to hear my father and an unfamiliar voice screaming. My older sister, Klara, padded out of the room and down the stairs, not seeming to be worried at all. Her lifeguard sweatshirt swayed around her legs as she walked, as it was too big for her. She was a champion swimmer, and a lifeguard at the local pool. I winced and cuddled closer into my blankets. Suddenly I heard a gunshot...then another...and I heard Klara screaming. Then it was quiet. I cried quietly, hoping it was all a dream. After a while, I crept out of my covers and tip toed downstairs. I saw my mother and father, laying in a pool of red liquid..and Klara was gone.'
