There was an awkward silence in the car going home from the hospital. No one knew what to say, and Niall was just keeping quiet. A couple of times I opened my mouth as if to say something, but caught myself, making me look like a goldfish. I was already nervous, because the following morning I was going to FaceTime Jess, with or without Josh being there, plus our performance that night, the signing the following lunchtime and us moving to Scotland, and now there was a lump in my throat about Brooke.

The most terrible thing happened while we were driving to Brooke's special surprise. It was all too fast to remember properly. All I remembered was the car hitting us. We were both rescued from the car, but while I escaped with only a sprained ankle and wrist and some cuits to the face, Brooke slipped into a coma. My injuries were only minor, which was a relief because I would be able to perform on our last night in Wales, we were lying next to each other in beds, but that would end as soon as the boys came to pick me up. I wanted to lay beside Brooke, and talk her ear off even if there was no way she could talk to me. I couldn't believe what had happened. I was heartbroken.

For three hours I was sat on the couch, trying to write a song, and by the end of it there were crumpled pieces of paper all over the couch and scattered on the floor, a carton of KFC on the coffee table and a foggy feeling in my brain. I couldn't write a song by myself. But then it hit me. I had the perfect song sitting right in front of me. I would sing Gotta Be You with the boys, and I was sitting in the perfect location: the hotel! I couldn't wait for Niall to get back so I could tell him the news.
