ZOE BELL PART 73

I don’t see his car, so I sit in mine, wondering what I should do or where I should go now. There’s a knock on my window and I almost scream before I recognize Alex in his black Three Days Grace sweatshirt. I get out and go into his warm arms.

"Are you okay?"

I nod. "I just needed to see you before I went insane. I can’t handle Curtis and Mason on my plate right now."

He pulls me inside and I’m glad I came here when I puts a slice of pizza in front of me.

"So where’s your car?" I take the pizza and put it on a plate with another slice.

"In the garage. My parents are gone."

I nod, taking a huge bite of the cheesy deliciousness. He piles his plate up with pizza and we go into the living room to eat.

"Spill." He tells me.

I begin my sob story and tell him about the pictures Zagger and Curtis showed me, and then all that happened from dinner with Mason. He laughed when I told him about my wish for a boy fairy to take care of all my problems.

"I just don’t know what to do!" I whined.

He taps my nose. "You should just ditch them both and hang out with me until Mason redeems himself." I think for a minute and wish that it was that easy. Mason would still be around, and Curtis would find a way to be around.

"You’re right, it won’t work." He traces the stress lines on my face and I try to relax my muscles.

"I love how you know what I’m thinking before I say it."

"That’s what best friends are for."

I kiss his cheek. "I’m glad you’re my best friend. I’d be lost without you."

"Same here. You’ve even saved my reputation a few times."

"Oh yeah? How?"

"I was known to be gay until I let loose in the locker room that I made it to third base with you in seventh grade."

I burst into laughter. I remembered how we were somewhat of a couple in seventh grade. Back when life wasn’t so complex.

"You’re still not gay, right?" I tease.

"Of course I’m not."

"Are you sure about that? I don’t see a girlfriend in the picture here."

"That’s because she’s in love with my best guy friend. She doesn’t see me the way I see her." He pushed a piece of hair back behind my ear and winked.

"Who is this lucky girl? I’ll have to talk to her."

He looks past me for a moment and says, "She’s a really awesome girl, and her eyes make me think of a bottomless ocean. And her lips are the color of a pink rose." He traced my lips with his finger.

I laughed and play swatted his hand away from me.

"And her laugh is the sweetest, clearest, tinkling I’ve ever heard in all my life."

"You’re joking with me, right?" I ask.

"Not entirely. I wish you were dating me, but Mason got you first. And when I do find a girl that loves me back, I want her to be just like you. My best friend."

I feel a little better, knowing he isn’t another boy on my list, and I am happy that he wants a girl like me. If I wasn’t stuck with Mason, I would give anything to have Alex as my boyfriend. That’s how much I truly did love him.

"I love you, best friend."

He takes my hand and kisses it. "I love you too."

We sit in silence while I’m mulling over the question I want to ask him. I can’t hold back anymore, so I just blurt it out.

"Why didn’t I qualify for your heart?"

He looks at me and shrugs. "I’ve wondered the same thing, many times. I just don’t know."

After another silence I pat his let. "You’ll find your princess, and you’ll be the most coveted Prince Charming in all the land of Southern Utah."

I feel accomplished when I get a laugh out of him. I love hearing him laugh. I haven’t heard it in a while, and I make a silent promise to myself to make sure I don’t go very long without it again.

"You should probably get home before someone beats down my door looking for you."

I sigh, knowing he’s right, but all my worries that have piled into my life have disappeared for the hour that I’ve been here with Alex. I almost want to crash here so that I can get a good nights sleep. I don’t think my mom would be too thrilled, but maybe if I ask my dad I’ll get my with a little less drama.

"If I promise to be a good girl, can I stay the night?" I ask in a little girl voice.

I get another laugh before he tells me he doesn’t care. I call my dad and tell him what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. He tries talking me into coming home, but since he has a tough time saying no to me, I get what I want and he comes over with Zane to give me clean clothes and my backpack.

"I hate to say it, but I told you so!" Zane said to me when I took my things from him.

"Told me what?"

"That you shouldn’t have gotten mixed in with Mason and all that."

I roll my eyes and shut the door on him. I guess that I should have listened, but I didn’t want to think about it right now.

ZOE BELL PART 72

"You’ll be really bored. I have one last paper to write for my final week of high school, and you’ll just get mad and leave if I don’t concentrate on you."

He promises he won’t do that, and follows me up to my room anyways. I grab my laptop and sit on the floor in front of my couch. Curtis sits behind me and massages my shoulders for me.

My paper was just a book report, so I was thinking about how my book was playing out similar to my life. The girl was in love with her best friend and another very suitable boy. She was, of course, torn between the two. Okay, it’s not exactly my life, but I do have more than one suitor in my life. Even if one of them is cheating on me with a girlfriend he told me never existed. I vividly remember him telling me that I was the first and only girl he was ever interested in. With the "connection" he has with me and all. Who even knows anymore! I’m so fed up with my relationships. Maybe I should just boycott boys for awhile. Maybe I’ll try some men in college.

Yet, as I say that, I lean into the amazing boy hands that are sending goose bumps up and down my arms and neck. Sometimes I wish I had a fairy that took care of all my boy problems for me! I must have been spacing out, because I am suddenly aware of a large hand waving in front of my face. I grab his hand and look back to see what he wants.

"Are you okay?" He asks, with a grin on his face.

"Why wouldn’t I be?" I snap. I surprised myself with my tone.

He puts his hands up in the surrendering position, and raises his eyes at me. I instantly fell bad and get up to kiss his cheek. It’s not his fault that I can’t keep my life in order. But he is a main reason!

"I’m fine. Just lots of things going through my mind. Sorry for snapping." I kiss his careful lips and he’s suddenly back to his normal fast paced self.

"The old Curtis has returned." I grinned as he broke away to kiss the rest of my face.

"Is that good or bad?" He kissed my neck a few times.

"Well, I’m not complaining. . ."

We both laughed and I saved my paper to print off later. I pushed away my homework and returned to his lap where I let old habits fall into place for about fifteen minutes. It was almost a relief when my mom called us down to dinner. I fake sadness when I pull him up off the couch and begin the descent of the staircase.

When we walk into the kitchen, my mom fakes a surprised face. I knew Zagger told her who was in my room with me, and she shoots me a look that tells me we’re going to talk later. My dad shakes his head and mutters under his breath. Zagger and Zane laugh and Curtis’s face goes slightly red.

Emerging from the fridge with a bowl of Jell-O is the last person I wanted to see right now. Even if he did give me the butterflies.

"Thank you, Mason. Let that on the table." MY mom says as she scrambles around him, putting the last touches on the food.

My dad pushes me into a chair so that I’m sandwiched between him and Mason. Curtis sits across from me, next to Zagger, and I can already tell that this is going to be a very awkward dinner. Unless I put a stop to it. . .

As food is passed around, I catch Zagger’s eye. "Who invited him?" I mouthed to him. He mouthed back that Mason had invited himself. I sighed and wanted to sink under the table and never emerge again.

"So how was your day?" MY mom asked, attempting to break the silence.

Everyone mumbled a response, but Mason’s was the one that stood out from the rest.

"I called my ex girlfriend up today and told her I wasn’t going to see her again."

"Wow. . . That’s interesting." My mom says.

"Yep. Then I tracked down my girlfriend to find her in someone else’s arms, and was rejected her forgiveness. I’m pretty heartbroken now." he sighed and I rolled my eyes. Everyone is staring at me.

"I found out that my boyfriend lied to me about being his first girlfriend. He was cheating on me over the weekend, and he told me he was protecting me as the excuse for playing tonsil hockey with some other girl. Who is more heart broken?"

Zagger, Zane, Curtis, and my dad said my name at the same time. I flashed a smug smile in Mason’s way before getting up and leaving the table. I grab my purse and keys off the table by the front door and drive around for about five minutes before I find myself parked in front of Alex’s house.

ZOE BELL PART 71

We end up in Aeropastle, and while the other boys check out clothes, I take Curtis to the perfume table.

"This is my favorite," I say, spraying my wrist with cologne that I knew he had.

"You like wearing the male cologne?" He teased.

"No, I like smelling it on very attractive boys."

He smiled as he sprayed himself with it. "Am I attractive?"

I give him a playful smile. "Very, very attractive." I lean in and inhale his scent mixed with the cologne. It is heaven! He pulls me into his arms and I feel like a school girl having her first crush. It’s ridiculous! But my happy moment is soon erased when I’m being yanked from Curtis’s arms. I looked up into the livid face of Mason, and I fell his fingers clamp around my upper arm.

"What are you dong Zoe? Why are you here with Curtis?" He’s pulling me out of the store because the workers are giving him dirty looks for yelling.

"I don’t know Mason. When you can tell me what you’re doing with Amber in Arizona, maybe we can talk. Now let me go!" He is looking at me with disbelief when Curtis and Zagger are on each side of me, glaring at him.

"What did you just say?"

"You heard her. Now let her go before you have one less arm to run with." Curtis was livid too. Eyes bright, pupils dilated, and arm muscles bulging, preparing to do some damage.

"I’m her boyfriend, dude. Back off. This doesn’t concern you."

"I’m her brother, it concerns me. Let her go, now." Zagger’s voice sent chills up my spine, and it must have had a similar effect on Mason, because he let go of my arm and took a step back.

Some girls I knew from school walked by with worried looks on their faces. "Let’s take this outside. If you get us banned from the mall, I will never forgive you guys." I tugged on Curtis’s arm and he let me lead him outside, back to his car. I look back and find the boys following closely behind.

"Does someone want to explain what’s going on for me?" Mason asks when we’re all positioned in a half circle behind the Chevelle.

Zagger looks at me and must know that I didn’t want to talk from the expression on my face. "Curtis and I were at a party in Arizona a few days ago, and we saw some things that would prove to a worried girlfriend that her boyfriend is cheating on her."

Mason won’t look at me, and he knows that he is totally busted. I know he’s going to pay for it. Big time. That was my plan.

"Can I have a minute alone with my girlfriend, please?" He asked, looking at me and raising his eyebrows.

"I wouldn’t be so sure about titles at the moment, man." Curtis kisses me so suddenly that by the time I have a chance to react, he pulls away from me and walks far enough away to give me privacy, but still keeping an eye on me. Zagger hesitates, and I give him a slight nod before he joins Curtis with Zane and Alex.

"What did they tell you?" Mason asked.

"They told me enough that I don’t trust you anymore." I cross my arms and lean against the car.

He looks down at his feet. Embarrassed, I assume. "I kind of got caught in a trap, which is no excuse for what I did, but just tell me what I have to do to gain your trust back." He steps closer to me and his hands move to my waist.

I turn my face away from him when he tries to kiss me, but I let his hands stay on me.

"It’s not something I can put a price on Mason. You have to prove to me that you deserve my trust. And why would I after you cheated on me? I thought you were, like connected, or something like that to me? What happened to that?"

He groans. "What did they tell you?"

I ignore his question and ask one of my won. "Why did you do it? Doesn’t the connection we have make me the only girl for you? Maybe you were only playing me, and you fed me a bunch of crap. That’s what this is, isn’t it?"

"I do have a connection with you! This, what we have, is so real. I love you so much it hurts, Zo!"

"Not enough if you go to other girls for love. And you lied to me."

"I’m sorry. I really am. Please let me have another chance? I promise I won’t disappoint you again. On my life, I swear it."

I can see that he is sincere, but that doesn’t mean it fixes my broken heart. And it most definitely doesn’t mean that I trust him again.

"I guess you’ll just have to take a number. I’ve got more guys on my plate than I can handle right now, and you just lost the top slot. I need some time."

I push his hands off my hips and Curtis is next to me before he can do or say anything else.

"I’m ready to go home," I say, and Curtis has me in the car before I can say goodbye.

There were lots of names directed to Mason on the way home that came from Curtis blowing off steam. I tried to just ignore him, since I felt horrible for agreeing with what he was saying. We got back to my house and he snapped out of his trance and back into his sweet as pie attitude that wanted to keep me company.

ZOE BELL PART 70

I heard Curtis’s car pull up, and I felt like hiding under my bed. Ugh. I’m not a little kid anymore! Okay, just get up and go talk to him like a civilized person, and together we can devise a plan that will make Mason sorry for what he’s done to me and our relationship.

I got dressed and went downstairs where I found Curtis and Zagger in the kitchen. They stopped talking when I walked in, but I didn’t say anything and searched the cupboards for some bagels.

"What was Mason doing here?" Curtis asked.

"I don’t know. I told him to leave me alone today."

"He’s a little suspicious, so we won’t tell him anything unless you want us to." Curtis came up behind me and put his arms around my waist.

"Thanks." He started to let go of me, but I leaned back into him, and he tightened his hold on me with obvious satisfaction.

"So this is your rebound plan, eh?" Zagger asked, pouring me some orange juice.

"Hell yeah it is!" Curtis spun me around and pulled me into a hug.

"We’ll see. You have to be nice, though."

"I can handle that." He kissed my cheek and pulled me to the table where he put strawberry cream cheese on my bagel for me.

"Mmm. Thank you." I bit into my bagel and groaned in delight. I was starving, and he caked the cream cheese on so that I could taste the sweet creaminess of the delicious red berry.

"What do you want to do on this fine day?" Curt asked me, giving a strand of my hair a playful tug.

"My parents don’t get home from church for two more hours. I say we go to the mall and get some Starbucks!"

"Your wish is my command!"

I finished my bagel in the middle seat of the sexy Chevelle with Zagger on my right, and Curtis driving on my left. Alex ended up coming with us in the backseat with Zane.

"So when did you two get back together?" Zane asked once he seen that Curtis had his arm around my shoulders and I was leaning into his side.

"This morning. Why do you care?" I bluntly said.

"Just wondering. Why did you jump off the soul mate boat?"

"I don’t really want to talk about it, so just stop asking questions, and enjoy the ride. You didn’t like me with him anyways."

Curtis turned the radio on and tightened his arm around me. Our fifteen minute ride consisted of the boys talking about things I didn’t care about, so I just relaxed and entertained myself by flipping through the several cd’s in Curtis’s car.

As soon as we were parked and out of the car, I dragged Curtis inside so that we would be the first to order and gt our drinks.

"Somebody sure is eager." Curtis chuckled when he looked back and the boys were still lingering by the car.

"I just wanted our orders in first so we can relax for a minute before we check things out."

We got to the front counter and ordered before the rest of our crew even got inside. Alex fixed me with a wary look, and I didn’t want to feel his disappointment on me, so I pulled Curtis down the little handicapped ramp that was semi enclosed in a hallway.

"What are you waiting for?" I asked him, pushing him against the wall and looking into his eyes.

"What do you mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean." He looked down at my lips and confirmed that he knew what I was talking about.

"I thought you would have wanted more time. . ."

"Time to do what? Waste my life away?"

He shrugged. "To think about whether or not you really wanted to be with me right now. . ."

I looked down at his collar bone and sighed. There’s a lot different with Curtis in the way he treats me. He used to be like wildfire, and not care about my feelings in our relationships. It used to be all about him. I kind of like having him more concerned with what I was going through right now.

The tip of his finger tilted my face up to look into his eyes. "I don’t want you feeling rushed."

"I’m not feeling rushed at all."

"Yeah?" I nodded. "You’re 100 percent positive?"

He’s leaning down with a smile that reveals his perfect white teeth. I reach up on my toes and our lips meet in a soft, sweet kiss. He’s holding back again, and I’m grateful for the new way I’m being handled. Especially since we’re in public. He stopped the kiss after a couple seconds, and I bury my face in his chest as he pulls me into a tight hug that I never want to break. His arms feel too nice around my waist.

"Are you guys done?" Zagger asked, pushing our drinks in our faces.

I sigh when Curtis releases me and takes his drink. I take mine in my left hand, and ling the fingers of my right hand with the fingers of Curtis’s left hand. He gives me a light squeeze as we follow the boys.

ZOE BELL PART 69

I went home later that night and found Zagger and Curtis waiting for me in my room.

"What are you two up to?" I hugged them both and stood back so I could see their faces clearly. I was feeling a little worried and hoped they weren’t here to guard me all night or something weird like that.

"We just came by to say hello." Zag muttered.

"Well hello. Was that all? I don’t usually find you in my room when all you want to do is say hi."

"We needed to tell you something, but you might already know about it."

I looked at Curtis and waited for him to continue with whatever they came here to tell me.

"Yes?" They kept staring at me with wary looks on their faces.

"Have you talked to Mason lately?" Zagger asked.

"Yeah, I just came from his house. Why?" I tossed my purse on my bed and kicked my shoes off.

"Where did he say he’s been the past couple of days?"

"Fending off bad guys. I guess that Adrian guy is still trying to kidnap me or something."

They glanced at each other and shook their heads a little.

"Did something happen?" I started feeling queasy. I knew there was something wrong earlier.

"Zoe, Mason’s been lying to you, and if you want to know the truth, you have to see something that you might not like very well."

I sat on my bed and looked down at my hands. What was my brother about to tell me? What is Mason doing that is making them upset? I took a deep breath before looking at Zagger.

"What did he do?" My voice broke and my hands were shaking.

They both sat on either side of me, and Zagger pulled out his phone with a picture showing on it. I took another deep breath and let Zagger place his phone in my hand. I looked down at the picture and saw Mason with a girl I’d never seen before. They were in a serious looking hug behind some trees. I skipped to another picture and it was of them kissing.

I gave back the phone and felt tears stinging my eyes. "Who is she?" I managed to croak around my tears.

"His ex-girlfriend from Arizona. Her name is Amber Johnson."

"How did you guys get that picture?"

"We were at a party in Phoenix, and we seen her there. Twenty minutes later, he showed up, and we followed them around most of the night."

"Weren’t you supposed to be in school?" I was going to find some possible way out of this nightmare. This was a nightmare right? I was just with Mason and he was declaring his love for me!

"We haven’t been going to school, Zoe. We only pretend we are for our mother’s sakes." They both snorted and found it amusing that the last year of their lives has been a lie.

"Lots of lying going on. What happens when you’re supposed to graduate?"

"We’ll figure that out later," Curtis snorted.

"So what are you going to do, Zoe?" Zagger asked me, putting his arm around my shoulders.

"I don’t know. Maybe I’ll go on a break from boys for a while."

"No!" Curtis almost shouted. "I’ll be your rebound, and you can make Mason wish he never did this to you!" He grabbed my hands and looked at me with hopeful eyes.

"That’s not fair to you Curtis!"

He pulled me into his arms. "I don’t care. I want my second chance. Even if it only lasts for a week or so. I don’t care."

I sighed. "How about I think about it."

"Fine." He kept one arm around me though, and I sort of found myself not caring.

"I’m sorry Zo," Zagger told me.

"You didn’t do it. Just forget about it, and don’t tell him why I’m going to be avoiding him. If you do, you’re going to pay!"

They promised they wouldn’t, and as soon as they left I crawled into bed, where I cried myself to sleep. Mason tried coming into my dreams, but even then I ignored him. All I seen when I looked at him was a girl I didn’t know. In the morning, I went out to get some air on my balcony and Mason was there, sitting in my swing.

"Morning beautiful." He opened his arms to me, but I turned my back to him.

"I don’t really want to see you right now. I need some time to think."

"Think about what?" He came up behind me and started rubbing my back.

"Just go please. We’ll talk later."

He sighed and tried to kiss me, but I turned away so he kissed my cheek. He looked at me, but I kept my gaze on my hands. I couldn’t bear to look at him right now.

He jumped off my balcony and ran away from my house. A little piece of me died inside when I watched his back disappear from my sight. How could this have happened to us? I thought he was bound to me, and me only! Who was this Amber chick that has now ruined the one relationship I thought was going to last me the rest of my life.

I curled up into a ball on my swing and wished things in my life were different. I know I can’t change the past, but I wish I knew what my future held for me. I’m terrified of all the things that could happen to me that are unknown!

Graduation was next Thursday, and I was moving to Cedar City the third or fourth week of June. My life used to consist of wishing I was older and out of school. Now I wish I was a little kid again. I wouldn’t have to worry about so much! Skinned knees are easier to fix than broken hearts.

ZOE BELL PART 68

"Are you going to tell me what’s been going on, son?" Trixie asked when we sat down to eat.

"Just the usual stuff mom. Nothing to worry about. It’s all been taken care of."

"I don’t believe you."

Mason started shoveling food into his mouth so he couldn’t talk, Trixie looked at me and rolled her eyes. I nodded and she picked up a conversation with me about graduation.

"Will you be going to college?"

I nodded. I didn’t know where yet, but it would most likely be in Cedar City at Southern Utah University. Mostly because that’s where Zagger is and I can come home easily on the weekends if I want to.

We finished dinner and Trixie insisted that we leave the kitchen for her to take care of. I tried to stay and help, but Mason took me outside where we laid in the grass and looked up at the stars together.

"Are you okay?" I asked him.

He linked our fingers together and nodded. I didn’t feel like forcing him to talk, so I stayed quiet and enjoyed the sounds of our breathing along with the quiet night time noises. It was nice to just be with him. Without having to say anything for us to be enjoying each other’s company. I loved having his fingers trailing up and down my arm. He pointed to a shooting star, and we both made a wish.

"Do you ever worry about what will happen after High School?" He suddenly asked me, pulling himself up on his elbows.

"Sort of. What made you ask that?"

He shrugged. "I was just thinking about it is all."

"Do you worry?" I rolled onto my side, facing him, and he did the same.

"Not for myself."

"For who then?"

"You."

"Why?"

"Because you’re going to school and stuff."

"And you aren’t?"

He shrugged and lay back down with his hands behind his head. "I already have my life planned out for me."

"What’s your life plan then?"

"To be with you and work in the car garage when I’m not doing stuff for Steve."

"What if I want to move? Then where will you work?"

His eyes widened. "I can’t move!"

"Why not?"

"I have a duty to fulfill with my pack, babe."

"For the rest of your life? Zagger and Curtis moved! And so have others!"

"Well I know that, but I haven’t been replaced yet. Zag and Curtis had replacements. There’s still a couple guys ahead of me that are waiting for replacements before I can get one."

"What do you mean?" I sat up and stared down at him.

"Well I can’t leave the pack short handed! When a younger wolf comes in, then I’m free to go unless they need extra help or something like that."

I didn’t realize that was how it worked, but I guess it made sense. "What if you get a replacement after you graduate? Will you move with me?"

He shrugged. "I guess. If that’s what you want."

"Are you coming to college with me?"

"Do you want me to?"

"It’s not my decision to make. Either you do or you don’t."

"I do then. To be with you." His eyes were shining, so I knew he was serious.

"How will you work?"

He touched my face. "I’ll commute. Why all the questions?"

"You’re the one who brought this subject up."

He chuckled. "I’m glad we found each other Zoe." He pulled me into his arms and I laid my head on his chest.

"I’m glad we did too."

ZOE BELL PART 67

"You’re being punished for not talking to me this long! No kissing until you tell me what you’ve been doing!"

He sighed and kept his arms around me. "We just had some stuff to take care of. I couldn’t call you because we were halfway to Salt Lake by the time the problem was taken care of and I can’t talk on the phone in my wolf form. You know that."

"Well you couldn’t have sent me a message through Zane? He was home last night but wouldn’t talk to me. He acted like a guard dog outside my bedroom window. When I said it like that, I realized that Zane probably was guarding me last night. It kind of creeped me out at first, but now I think I’m glad.

"What’s going on?" I asked again when Mason didn’t deny my guard dog theory.

"It was nothing serious Zo. I was just taking an extra precaution because Carter’s threat is still vivid in my mind."

"Are they gone now?"

He nodded. "But they’ll be back. They always come back even if they go away a few less than they come here with."

My eyes widened. "You’ve killed people?"

"No, vampires. And I didn’t take part in it, even though I wanted to, so don’t worry."

I took a couple steps back. "You wanted to kill them?"

"Zoe, I can’t always control my wolf moods. If I’m in a hunting mode, I’m going to want to kill them. Do you want them to take you away? And kill other innocent humans?"

I relaxed a little and felt better that he wasn’t running around constantly killing things. It just didn’t feel right to think of him as a killing monster. His beautiful wolf image in my mind was starting to darken in the amazement I felt when I thought about it.

"Can I hold you now?"

I rolled my eyes, but welcomed his arms around me once more.

"What were you doing before you came here?" he asked me, kissing my forehead.

"Writing out graduation invites, I need to call my mom."

She told me that she was almost done, and I didn’t have to go back and help her. I didn’t protest too much, since I wanted to be with Mason, and he took me to his house where his mom made us some dinner.

Zoe Bell 66

We ended up just watching a few movies and eating dinner together in the cabin, and when it was time to go to bed Zagger was asleep on the couch, so I snuck into the bedroom with Mason where I slept soundly through the night. The next morning was a quick bustle as we got everything ready to go and packed in the truck. One last raptor run with Mason to clean up after Abbie and Cliff, and we were set to go!

Mason and I rode down to the lake and parked the bikes in the water so far that only the tires were submerged, and then we splashed and scrubbed them clean of all the mud that collected when Abbie and Cliff went out the previous night. I was completely drenched when we were finished. Mason decided that he liked seeing goose bumps on my arms and legs, and continued to splash water on me. He let me get him back though, and I pushed him off the dock to make sure that he was soaked like I was.

Our ride home off the mountain was quiet and peaceful as we watched the scenery around us. When we finally got home, life went on as normal. Graduation was a few weeks away, and preparations were being made for our last high school experience.

A week before graduation, Mason was hanging out at my house when all of a sudden he left without saying two words. By this time, I was used to him running off and taking care of business, but I didn’t see him at all for the next two days. I was over at Abbie’s house with my mom and Malloree, writing out graduation invitations, when he finally answered my millions of messages that Saturday afternoon.

It was only a text message that said he wanted to meet later at our special spot. I tried ignoring the thumping on my heart while I was with the girls, but I just knew something was up!

"I’m sure everything is fine. Stop freaking out and breathe." My mom told me when I told them what I was worried about.

"But I can’t stop worrying mom! I haven’t gone this long without talking to him since we first started dating!" She chuckled, took my pen and the invite I had in my hand for the last twenty minutes, and told me to go find Mason.

"No mom I can’t. I have to finish these. They need to go out today."

"Go find out what’s going on. I’ll finish up since I’ve been the one filling them out anyways."

I blushed. I’d been so worried that I hadn’t actually been doing my job.

"No, I’ll stay and finish. It’s okay."

She put my keys in my hand and walked me out to my car. "I know what it’s like to be worried about the ones you love. Go find out what’s going on, and then call me if you want to come back. I’ll see how much I have left to do by then."

I hugged her. "Thanks mom. I love you."

"Love you too sweety."

I got in my car and sped to the park in front of the middle school. Ever since he first showed me he was a wolf, that’s bee our hang out spot when we’ve wanted to be alone the last couple of months.

I had only a couple seconds to think before he was by my side and I was in his arms. He started kissing me, but I pushed him away.

"What in the world is going on? Where have you been the last two days?"

"I’ll tell you in a minute. I need to hold you. I want to kiss you." He grabbed me, but I put up a pretty good struggle.

ZOE BELL PART 65

Zagger morphed and pulled a stump over to me. "I’m staying the night."

"Okay, cool?" I didn’t care really.

"You’re not sleeping anywhere near him, or I’ll tell mom and dad."

My mouth fell open and I felt my face get hot from anger. "I don’t want you here anymore, I just decided that. Please leave." I got up and started walking on one of the many trails around the cabin.

Nothing happened last night, so I don’t understand why Zagger suddenly cares about my love life. He wasn’t the boss of me! I’m 18! I can make my own choices. I heard someone following me, so I quickened my pace, wishing they would just leave me alone. I knew I couldn’t outrun them if it was one of the guys, so I spun around and Curtis almost ran into me.

"Why are you following me?" I snapped.

"I’m sorry. I just wanted to talk to you for a second."

I waited for him to continue, but he grabbed my hand and pulled me farther away from the cabin.

"Is this really necessary?" I whined.

"Yes. Just a little farther and they won’t be able to hear us if we whisper."

I groaned. I really didn’t want to talk to him at this specific moment. We were behind a tree when he finally stopped.

"What’s so secretive that we had to come clear out here?"

"I just wanted to say sorry for what happened the last time we seen each other."

I rolled my eyes. "It’s okay. You already apologized, and I don’t want to talk about it anymore."

"Okay. That’s fine with me. I have a question for you though."

"Yeah?"

"Do you regret it?"

I shrugged. This must be why we came clear out here. "Does it matter?"

"I guess not, I just wondered."

"Well I don’t. So let’s just go back. Carry me and run. I don’t want to walk." I received scratches from the bushes I walked through in my shorts and sandals.

"You want me to carry you?" He was shocked.

"Well if you’re opposed!" I turned and started walking back. Today was turning really dramatic for me! He picked me up and ran back to the cabin where he promptly put me on my feet in front of Mason. His arms snaked around my waist and put some Advil and a water bottle in my hands.

"What’s this for?"

"You seem annoyed. Do you have a headache, or other PMS symptoms?"

My eyes widened as I stared at him in shock. Did my boyfriend just tell me I was PMSing? I threw the pills over my shoulder and took a drink of water.

"I’m fine! I’m irritated because the two people who get under my skin the most are here, and they’re already giving me a run for my money in the first five minutes of seeing them!"

He pulled me into a hug and rubbed my back. "Just breathe, Zoe. They’re not the ones that matter right now."

I sighed and kissed his cheek. "What else are we doing today?"

"Whatever you want."

"Can we inflict harm upon Zagger?"

He laughed. "I don’t think you’ll be able to do that without hurting yourself babe."

I groaned.
