Repunzel
#6
I woke the next morning to a fright. The
walls in my new room closely resembled the ones of my old house
in the woods. When I opened my eyes, fear consumed me of being
back in that house, trapped by the four walls and a very angry
father.
I waited for my heart rate to slow, and then sat up to find
Vicky plaiting Amie’s hair. They looked over and smiled
at me.
“Good morning sleepy head!” Amie crooned.
“How was your beauty sleep?”
“Very good,” I answered smiling and trying to think
of the last time I had slept in an actual
bed.
We were walking down to breakfast when Vicky explained the plan
for the day. “We need to get you a uniform for school
because tomorrow’s Monday, and I noticed that you
don’t have many clothes, so we have to go downtown.
That’s where all the good clothes shops
are.”
I scoffed down breakfast while Amie explained to me how
‘dorky’ the school uniforms are. I smiled and
laughed at her jokes, but all the time growing even more
nervous about the next day when I would be attending school. To
be honest, all I wanted when I was little was to go to school,
to make friends and learn new things. But we had entered the
age of the teenager, and I didn’t exactly know how to act
in public, being raised in a house in the middle of nowhere and
all.
When we finished breakfast, we got changed, I let Amie and
Vicky do my hair, and then we set off to go clothes shopping. I
had never been clothes shopping before, so this was a new
experience for me. At the end of the day, I didn’t
actually buy anything because I had no money, but the other
girls didn’t end up buying anything either. We just
enjoyed window shopping and trying things on. I decided that I
liked shopping.
We went to one store where they sold uniforms for different
schools. We bought my uniform, and when Amie paid for it, she
swiped a card and we left.
“What was that card you just swiped? Like a credit card
or something?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of
me.
“Oh, just a card from the adoption place,” Vicky
explained. “The government pays for everything we need,
like food, school, and our uniforms and stuff. You’ll get
a card eventually, but whatever you do, don’t use it for
nail polish.”
This made Amie and I laugh as we walked back home.
Home. I smiled to myself for like the hundredth time
today. The house in the middle of the forest was never my home.
It was temporary, while I was waiting for my prince. I suddenly
realised why it never bothered Amie or Vicky that they would
never get adopted. Whilst they had each other, they had family,
and it didn’t matter where they were. As long as they had
family, they were home. Now I had these two girls, both
perfectly imperfect in their own ways. Now, I wasn’t
waiting anymore.
I was finally home.
