first join tumblr, obviously..
the main thing you really need to know about is the dashboard. when you start following people, this is where all of their posts show up. you're going to want to follow people that post things that you like...for example, there are blogs dedicated to fashion, certain celebrities, movies, funny gifs, etc. when i first started on tumblr, i followed people from witty that i knew had tumblrs, and i followed fashion blogs and cute photography blogs because i knew that was what i would want to reblog. reblogging is just taking something that someone else has posted, and putting it on your blog. when you do this, your followers will see this post on their dashboard...this is a little confusing but you'll get used to it.
now, setting up your profile...your profile is basically your "blog" in general. this is where you can scroll down and see everything you have posted/re blogged in the past. a big part of tumblr is blog themes. a theme is basically like a layout on witty. there are a ton of places to get themes, you can buy them from tumblr but i don't recommend that because most people get html theme codes free from people who make them, just like on witty.
for example, i got my theme from http://pandor4.tumblr.com/ because that particular person makes themes. to find themes, i suggest looking around at people's blogs. there will almost always be a "Theme" link as credit, so just click that and it'll take you to a theme-maker's profile, and you can browse through their themes and see what you like.
