"we're leaving without you."
danny yelled as his voiice went in and out. i could tell he was
walking down the hallway.
"wouldn't want that, would we?" he laughed as i got
up and started to pick up my bag.
"nope stop." he said.
"i can carry it." i said, and lifted it, but it
didn't budge off the ground.
"i might have overpacked."
"little bit." he laughed as he picked it up and walked
downstairs. i just strolled behind him, and stopped by the
kitchen where his mom was making coffee.
"good morning." i smiled, and she turned around with an
extra traveler's cup that you can throw out.
"i got you decaf, if that's alright."
"yes that's perfect, i mean i can't really have
caffeine. i do sometimes though. don't
tell." i smiled, and she laughed.
"not on my watch. how did you sleep?"
"i slept great." i said, and i turned my head as pat
walked into the door and grabbed a banana. he threw me an
apple.
"good call." i said, as we both took bites of the
fruit.
"we have plenty of bananas." mrs. lickham said.
"i don't like bananas." i smiled.
"of course he knew that." she said, and walked outside
to help pack the car.
"your not getting a kiss until the banana taste goes
away."
"you're such a liar." he smiled.
"no, i really hate bananas." i said, and bit my
apple. he threw the peel away and backed me into a
corner.
"stop." i laughed.
"not until you kiss me."
"nope." i said. i put my hand to his stomach.
even through his shirt i could feel his scar, so i traced it with
my finger. he shuddered.
"giving me goosebumps." he said, and sure enough on his
arm, the hairs were standing up.
"good." i said, and looked up and kissed him.
"you gave in." he smiled.
"well it's not my fault i can't help it." i
licked my lips and tasted banana.
"ewwww." i said, and he laughed, and went to go pack
the car. everything was pretty much packed, and i grabbed my
vera bradley carry on, and we all
loaded into the car. mr. lickham drove us to the airport, and we all checked
our luggage in. we were going to meet pat's cousins in
florida for the layover and then
we'd all fly into the bahamas
together. we waited for a while to board the flight, i just
talked to mrs. lickham and
erin about a bunch of stuff, sports, school,
everything. they were so much fun to be around, and
danny would throw in a random comment
that would have me cracking up. mr. lickham was more quiet, but he
was still incredibly nice. finally, they called our flight
to board, and it was danny, pat, and
me were sharing a row, as mr. and
mrs. lickham shared a row with
erin. we were diagonal from each other, and
since neither danny or pat could sit in the
middle comfortably, i ended up sitting in the middle. pat got
window seat because apparently danny got a
better bed when we got to the house, but i didn't care.
i was just too excited to finally get there. after about
ten minutes into the flight, i put my head on pat's shoulder,
and he grabbed my hand.
"i know you're tired, go to sleep." he whispered,
as i closed my eyes.
"i'll try."
"i'll wake you up before we
land." he said. i tried to focus my breathing and
after my 247th breath, i drifted off into
sleep.
i awoke to pat walking across me on his way back from the
bathroom. i stretched, and his blue eyes just met mine, and
he smiled the irresistable crooked
smile, and whispered.
"sorry, didn't mean to wake you."
"it's fine." i smiled, and took a deep breath.
"we're landing soon anyways." he said, and the
seatbelt sign flashed on.
"more than halfway there." he smiled, as we held hands
as the plane began its descent back down to earth. we
waited, and departed the airplane, and went to meet pat's
cousins. they went a day earlier and spent the day in
florida. they were all walking
towards us, as i looked and saw a woman who resembled
mr. lickham and her husband was
walking next to him. next to her was a girl with bright
blonde hair, and a slim figure in shorts with a baggy
shirt. next to her was a girl in soffees with dirty blonde hair in a bun, and a
tshirt. the two boys were walking
behind them, one wearing a football shirt with a buzz cut, that
looked like pat's, the other wearing a lax hoodie with a bright blonde lax flow. athletic
ability must run in the family, i
thought.

(SORRY ! i've been soooo busy with work and lax, but
here's a new addition, and i might add another one too !
comment with what yoou think ! )
i woke up and
rolled over to an empty bed. i looked around the room,
and it was empty, the sun was shining through the window like
it was specifically seeking out my eyes to shine into. no one
was in cordin's house, so i made his bed and cleaned his
room a little bit. there was a picture of him and his
mom. his mom was wearing a pink hat to cover her bald
head, and it was after the race for the cure. my eyes
started watering and i walked out of his room. there was
a note on the counter addressed to me, so i read it.
"mom's viewing at 11, and the burial's at
1." the clock read 11:30, so i trudged over to my
house. i took a shower, and curled my hair. i put
on a black sweater with my black skirt, tights and black
flats. the jacket covered my bright blue cast, because
for may it was oddly cold. my hair was in a ponytail with
a headband, and i checked the obituary, and i recognized the
address immediately. they were burying cordin's mom
at the same cemetary as rob's. i wiped a tear as i
drove forty five minutes to the cemetary in new jersey. i
pulled into the cemetary, and there was a green tent right
where they were going to bury her. i saw cordin pacing
around a good 50 feet away. my heart broke as i got out
of the car and walked over to him to see his red, tear stained
face. tears had already fallen down my face, and he
wrapped me up in a huge hug. as he released me, i wiped a
tear falling from his eye, and whispered "it's going
to be okay." he turned as another family member
diverted his attention, when i saw something out of the corner
of my eye. first, all i saw was the huge tree that rob
was buried near, then as my eyes wandered towards his grave, i
saw him standing there, looking at his grave. i looked
around and everyone was heading towards the tombstone
area. i couldn't watch anyone else too young be put
into the ground, so i walked over to his grave.
"rob?" i called out, and he turned his head, and his
creased forehead and furrowed brow turned into a huge smile, as
he gave me a hug, and kissed my cheek. i felt him there,
rob was with me.
"what are you doing baby?" i whispered through the
tears streaming down my face.
"looking at this tombstone. they did an awful job at
cutting the edges," he showed at one of the edges i
haven't noticed.
"there's something else wrong with it," i
whispered, and he wiped a tear, and lifted my head to see
his.
"what baby?" he whispered.
"rob, it doesn't belong here." i said, and
started balling, "just like hers doesn't deserve to be
there, rob why is this world so cruel." i whispered, and
he quieted me, and we sat on the ground, and leaned on someone
else's tombstone.
"rob why did they take you?" i said, and put my head
on his shoulder.
"excuse me." i heard a high pitched voice yell, and
as soon as i heard it, i knew i was home.
"what?" i looked up at rob, and a huge smile was on
his face. i looked around his shoulder, and saw a girl
about 18 walking towards us. she had short blonde hair
and huge green eyes.
"no,"
"why him, why him?" she imitated me, and i
smiled. "ever ask why me?" she laughed, and i
got up and jumped into her arms.
"only every day." as more tears streamed down my
face. "melanie how did you get here?"
"he told me you were going to be here today. i'm
not sure how he does it, but he does it." she smiled, and
elbowed rob, who was still on the ground. "if i was
still there when you met him, i would have approved."
"melanie, is this what you would have looked like?" i
asked.
"well to your eyes, yes. hair's grown back thank
god." i laughed.
"nice going on your arm." she said, and poked at the
cast.
"wasn't my finest moment." i said.
"i know. i saw." she said, and shook her head.
"i miss you." i said, and another tear slid down my
face, as she looked up, and saw cordin walking away from the
crowd of people that were now standing. i looked at him,
and back at mel and rob.
"go get him, i'll come visit you later." she
said, and walked away. rob looked at me with his big blue rob
eyes, and i started crying. he wrapped me in a hug, and i just
silently broke down.
"he needs you now. you don't need me." he said. i
looked up at him.
"yes i do. don't leave." i said, and he
kissed my cheek, and disappeared. i guess he already
did.

we met in
front of the car before he walked me in. his family was
sitting there, and when we walked in they got up, and we walked
over to the table. it was a cozy little table for 6, and i
sat next to pat , who sat at the head of the table, and erin was
to my right. danny was right across from me, and next to
him was his mom, and pat's dad at the other end. we
flipped through the menu and i got a chicken salad. i
wasn't hungry so i didn't want to risk throwing up
again. after the waiter came and left, we were talking
about school and stuff. the soccer championship that we
ended up winning, felt centuries ago, when pat and i weren't
together, as did the football team win states. the happiest
either of us could've been, but we weren't with each
other, so it didn't feel right.
"devon have you decided where you're going to
college?" mrs. lickham asked me.
"i was accepted to uconn, so i think i'm going to go
there." i smiled.
"that's good. and pat, is going all the way across
the country to usc." she said, and i looked down.
"that's so exciting." i said with false hope, and
pat squeezed my hand under the table.
"dev can't you just transfer your nursing credits
whenever you want?"
"i applied to ucsd, which has an amazing nursing program,
but they haven't gotten back to me yet." i said.
"so you can still be close?" erin said.
"if i get in. i applied last year though so i
don't think they're going to accept me." i said.
"well, speaking of all this traveling." pat's dad
finally spoke up. "devon what are you doing over
thanksgiving break?"
"well all my family's going to my aunts in chicago, but
we're too afraid to go flying with delaney just getting over
her coma and all." i said. "so we're just staying
here. what are you guys doing?"
"well." pat began. "my uncle, yes your doctor, has
a house in the bahamas." he said, and smiled.
"and you're going there?" i asked, as all my plans
to spend time with him over break faded.
"yes.." erin said.
"but.." pat said.
"what?" i asked. danny finally blurted out.
"you're coming with us!" my heart stopped.
"what?"
"we already talked to your parents, and they were willing to
let you spend the week with us in the bahamas. i knew you
wouldn't mind." his mom laughed. i was in utter
shock , and i started laughing.
"so i'm going to the bahamas over thanksgiving
break?" and pat nodded his head. "with you?" i
pointed to him. and he smiled.
"why didn't you tell me?" i asked.
"we wanted it to be asurprise." danny said.
"oh my gosh i'm soo excited !" i said, and
smiled.
"i thought so." pat said, and i could barely contain my
excitement as the waiter came with our meals. we ate and
still talked more of the trip.
"my uncle's family is going, and my aunt too." pat
said.
"as in my sister." his dad cut in.
"my uncle has three boys, 13, 10, and 7." danny
said.
"and my aunt has two girls and two boys. the girls are
18 and 15 and the boys are 16 and 8."
"oh god i'm gonna lose track." i laughed.
"don't worry. the only ones you need to worry
about are my aunts. the little kids will be running around
everywhere you won't even be able to tell the
difference."
"okay. where do your cousins live?"
"they're from florida. i'm warning you now, my
cousin bri can be a toughie." he said.
"that's my aunt karen's daughter who's our
age. the younger girl is brook and the two boys are caleb
who's 16 and cole who's 8."
"alright i think i have that."
"and my uncles kids are jake, nick, and sam."
"haha this is going to be so fun." i said, and finished
picking at my salad.
"so when do we leave?"
"you're missing school this friday, so i'd start
packing soon." his mom said. "the weather's
going to be beautiful,so pack for summer weather." she
smiled.
"like hot hot?" i asked.
"yes dear, bring some bathing suits and at night it only
drops down to 60 at most."
"okay sounds good." pat stood up to leave. "thank
you so much for lunch." i smiled, and hugged mr and mrs.
lickham. pat walked me out to his car, and i waited for him
to shut the door before i screamed with
excitement.

i woke up and felt a lot
better. i didn't feel the urge to throw up, neither did
i eat anything to not push it. good thing i didn't eat
a lot the day before or it would've been a lot messier.
i walked over to my dresser and turned on my two curling
irons. a skinny and a fat one. i checked my phone and
blake texted me.
"hey what are you doing tonight?" i texted her back and
said
"pat and i are both sick, so we're not doing anything
tonight. sorry. what are you up to?"
"dee!" i shouted, but it immediately hurt my head, and
i ran over to my toilet and threw up a little. not a
considerable amount it just hurt my head. note to self,
don't yell.
"what?" she said as she walked in. she was
wearing denim capris with zip up jacket and her sperry's.
"where are you going?" i asked.
"i think his uncles boat, actually." she laughed.
"i should've known, the sperry's." i
laughed. everyone called them the boat shoes.
"i don't want my hair curled," she said as she
switched out the curling irons for my flat iron, and finished
with her eyeliner as i brushed my teeth quickly.
"did you just throw up?" she asked.
"yes, but no i'm fine. i just yelled your name and
it hurt my head." i said. i parted her hair and broke
it up into sections and straightened it until it was pin
straight. i slightly hair sprayed her and she was ready to
go.
"thanks dev." she said, and she finished putting her
makeup on as i laid down again.
"pat stil sick?" she asked.
"yea, i have to text him." i said.
"i'm sorry i'm leaving you."
"no your not."
"i know but still." she said, and i laughed.
"have fun, don't worry."
"thanks so much dev." she said, as she walked out of
the room. i laid down and blake had answered, her and chris were
just hanging out, and wanted to see if we wanted to come. and
before i could even text him, i got a text from pat.
"hey baby.. how are you feeling?" so i answered.
"a lot better, how about you?"
"same, i slept it off. but oh my god i have the best thing
to tell you !"
"what?" i asked.
"i can't tell you now. i'm not allowed. but if
we're up to it, how about lunch tomorrow?"
"babe why can't you tell me? and alright sounds
good."
"i just can't, but you'll love it."
"you're gonnna killl me." i said.
"i know (;" he said, and i slowly fell asleep
again.
i woke up at 10ish, and pat texted me saying to call him when i
woke up. i walked around my room and felt a lot better, so i
called him.
"morningg sunshine." he laughed.
"heey you.. how are you feeling?"
"a lot better. you still up for lunch?"
"of course. where are we going?"
"can't tell you."
"what should i wear?" i asked.
"something nice, my parents are coming."
"really nice? like dress?"
"i'm not sure. uhh."
"put erin on." he laughed, and called her.
"hello?" she said.
"hey er, are you coming to lunch?"
"of course !" i could hear the smile in her voice.
"what should i wear?"
"i'm wearing a dress with sandals."
"hmmm. i was thinking the same thing. flip
flops?"
"i have these sandals with black flowers on them, so not
really."
"are boots too wintery?" i asked.
"wear them with a bright color." she said.
"brilliant ! thanks er!" i said.
"want me to put pat back on?"
"does he want to talk to me?"
"dumb question." she said, and i heard pat almost
immediately.
"are you done going through your wardrobe?"
"yes." i smiled, "thank you."
"i'm going to pick you up. can you be ready by
like 1?"
"you're underestimating me. of course i can."
i laughed.
"alright i'll pick you up then."
"i'll seee you then."
"bye."
"seeeya babe." and he hung up. i took a shower,
and straightened my hair a little bit. i pulled it into a loose
ponytail as i put on a light blue shirt that came down to my
forearms, and a high black skirt on. i put on grey shrug
boots, and jewelry to match. i did my makeup, and it was almost
one, when pat texted me, saying he was here. i grabbed my
bag and ran downstairs. i told dee where i was going and
headed off. i walked outside and his silver volvo was in the
driveway. i walked over into the passengers seat, andhe just
smiled the whole time.
"what?" i asked.
"nothing, i just missed you."
"i missed you too." i said, and he leaned over and
kissed me before he backed out of my driveway and off to meet his
parents.
"so delaney went out with justin last night." i
said.
"running back justin?" he asked.
"yea him."
"oh, how was it?"
"it was fun, i guess. he took her on a boat."
"a boat?" he asked.
"i'm not sure. i just did her hair. and threw up a
little." he laughed.
"ugh that was the worst."
"sorry." i smiled.
"it's not your fault. you got me out of workouts
today."
"good." i smiled, and grabbed his hand from in between
the seats. we finally pulled up to a nice restauruant, that
i'd never been to before, and i got out.
