I'm a pretty nice person. I love making friends. Talk to me. :)
One day, when I was a freshman
in high
school, I saw a kid in my class walking home from school. His
name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying
all his books. I
thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring all their books
home on a Friday night? What a nerd."
I already had my weekend planned, (sleepover, and
football game with friends) so I just shrugged my shoulders
and kept walking.
As I was walking, a bunch of kids came
running up to him, knocking him down and all of his books. His
glasses went
flying. He looked up and I saw the most awful
sadness in his eyes. Feeling sympathetic, I ran to
help. I crawled on
my hands and knees, looking for his glasses. I saw tears in his
eyes.
Finally I found his glasses and handed them to him,
saying, "Those guys were jerks. They really should get
lives. He
looked at me and said "Thanks!" with the
biggest smile. It was a smile that wasn't just
happiness, but real gratitude.
I helped him pick up all of his books, and asked him where he
lived. Turns out, he lived near me. I asked him why I
Had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private
school before this. I would have never hung out with
private school kids before. I walked him with
him, talking the whole way. He turned out to be a
pretty cool kid. I
asked him if he wanted to come to the football game on Saturday
with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung
out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I
liked him. Same with my friends.
As the years went by, we became the best of friends.
I loved him, he was the most amazing guy.
But I never had
feelings for him. I mean, sure, I got jealous sometimes.
He got girls left and right. From freshman to senior year,
he
became more attractive. More popular. But I was always his best
friend. He was always there for me, no matter what.
Finally senior year came and we had
to start thinking about colleges.
Kyle was going to go to Georgetown to
become a doctor. I was going to Duke. I knew we'd still be
friends. The miles wouldn't make a difference. We were
that
close.
Kyle, being the nerd he was, was the valedictorian of our
class. He had to make a speech at graduation. I was happy
and nervous for me. I'm gad it wasn't me who had to
speak up there. The day arrived at last. Right before the
speech
he told me how nervous he
was. I assured him he'd be fine and
that I loved him. "Thanks." He whispered as he
hugged me. As he began his speech, he said,
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make
it through all these tough years. Your parents, your
teachers,
your siblings, but most of all, your friends. I am
here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is
the best gift to
give someone. I am going to tell you a story."
I just looked at Kyle onstage with disbelief as he told
the story of the first day we met. He had planned
to kill himself
over the weekend. He talked about how he cleaned out his
locker that day, carrying all of his stuff home, so his
mom
wouldn't have to do it later by
herself. He made eye contact with me in the
crowd and smiled. "Thankfully, I was
saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
I heard a gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular
boy told us about his weakest moment. I saw his mom
and dad looking at me, smiling with the most grateful smile. I
had tears of happiness in my eyes. Not until that moment
did I realize how much I had meant to him.
Never underestimate your actions. You can save
someones
life.
