I agree with the comments below, but to be honest I think you shouldn't. I don't mean to sound harsh at all, but if that were me I would be a little ticked off. Just put yourself in the author's shoes, ask the actuall author if it is okay, and put her name in the credit. And maybe if your lucky you might find a whole 'nother plot line that you think is even better ;)

as long as you give credit like "I was inspired by _________'s story so i decided to write something similar" Or something like that
