Part #2

“What, why?”

I knew this shocked her, because this would be my only chance, no matter how small it was, for me to survive. I just couldn’t risk it.

“Because ma, I want time… to you know… say goodbye to everyone. If I take the surgery I would only have like a week or two tops, and I don’t want that.”

“Okay sweetie, think over it while I go get the doctor so you can tell him what you want.”

My mom leaves the room while I whip out my cell phone and text my best friend Mckayla. I tried to tell her the best I could, but it was hard to tell my best friend that I am dieing.

Me: Hey, this is really hard to say over text… I’ll just tell you when I get home. Come over around 12, okay? I’ll be back from the doctor by then.

Mckayla: Miranda…? What’s going on? What happened? Are you okay?

Me: Kind of. Can you come over at 12? It’s really important.

Mckayla: Yea, sure, anything. See you soon. Ily.

Me: Okay byee. Ily too.

My mom walks in the door with the doctor right behind her.

“I heard you made your choice about the surgery, what did you choose?” The doctor says in a hushed tone.

“Yea, I did. It was a really hard choice to make but I know that what I choose I want one hundred percent. I’ve decided to not do the surgery. I just don’t want to risk dieing in it and not saying good-bye. I want to live a little longer.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’ve never been so sure in my life.”

“Okay then. I’m going to have you come in twice a month to check on you, and tell you how it is going.”

“Alright,” Says my mom, “We will see you in two weeks.”

“Okay, goodbye.” The doctor replies.

My mom and I walk out the door; there is an awkward silence between us the whole car ride home. Although I did manage to tell her that Mckayla is coming over and she said that was fine, but other than that no words were spoken.

We arrive at the house, and in no longer than two minutes Mckayla shows up at the door. I feel like she ran here because she is out of breath. I don’t know how I’m going to tell her, but I’m sure it won’t make a difference no matter how I say it. Either way its more than likely I’m going to die.

part # 1

I always thought I would get some warning, I never thought it would come as this big of a surprise. I kind of thought something was going to happen when I got more and more random nose bleeds now and then. I never wanted my life to end like this. Especially at thirteen.

The doctor walks in the door, “Mrs. Phillips, will you please come step outside for a moment. I need to talk to you.”

My mom, squeezing my hand as hard as she can, looks at me. She stares into my eyes. She’s worried, as am I. I have hope thought, my mom never thought positive, she always thought for the worst. I guess it’s good to think negative because it can only get better from there. She then reluctantly lets go of my hand, kisses me on the forehead, and walks out the door.

The doctor talks while my mom patiently listens. I can see them through the tiny window in the door. Her eyes are turning red, and the start to fill up with tears. The doctor hugs her, and I can’t see what happens from there because I’m to busy burying my head in my knees not wanting to know what is going to happen next.

A few minutes later my mom walks in, the doctor stays put in the hall, probably not wanting to see anyone else cry.

“Miranda sweetie, my beautiful baby girl, ” my mom begins as a few more tears fall from her eyes, “I’m so sorry. This should’ve never happened to you. It’s not fair at all, Miranda… you have Leukemia. It wasn’t that bad at first, but we waited to long. Now it is spread to your liver, and brain. The doctor says that it is unlikely for you to get better.”

I know that’s not all my mom needed to say because she wipes more tears away and stutters trying to start her speech again.

“The-The doctor says you have a choice to do surgery or not. Surgery is very dangerous since it spread. The surgery might even be fatal. I left the choice up to you, what do you want to do?”

“If, if I don’t take the surgery… about how much time would I have?” I made the words come out, even though the only thing that I thought would come out were tears.

“He says six months, but no one knows for sure. It may be more, or it may be less.”

“I’m not going to do the surgery.”

today,
I was hanging out at my brother's apartment and while he was showering,
I put my iPod on shuffle and began dancing in the living room. The Dora
the Explorer theme song came on and I began to sing along. Suddenly, a door
opened and his room mate ran out singing along to the song at the top of his
lungs, not realizing that I was there. We exchanged an awkward glance,
then broke out into dance. I think I found my future husband.
