American Dream
prologue
I
looked across the street on February 28th and smiled. Behind the
wrought iron gates was a large, Victorian building. Mayflower
High. I got out of the car, pecked my mum lightly on the cheek
and began to walk toward the school. "And Dakota!" She
yelled. I turned and grinned at her. "Don't forget that
you are you - nobody else." For the past 8 years I had been
home schooled by my creative, imaginative and kinda strange
parents, and now they had decided, having moved to the town of
Sharville, I deserved to mix with other kids my own age. I walked
through the beautiful gates and immidiately bit my lip in
anxiety. There were groups of girls everywhere! Gaggles of year
7's near the gate, fit sixth formers leaning against the
school wall as if they owned the place. I looked around for other
Year 8's and caught sight of the girl I lived next door to,
in a group of pretty girls, laughing and chatting. She caught my
eye and smiled, waving me over. "Hey Carolina!" I said
quietly, smiling weakly. "Guys, this is Dakota! Dakota, this
is Gabriel," she pointed to a model thin, pale, ghostly girl
who only gave me a whisper of a smile. "Arizona," a
black girl with a huge afro and a huge smile waved at me.
"Rhoda," a coffee coloured girl with vibrant, green
eyed nodded at me. "And finally, Indiana." another pale
girl, who was stood next to me turned up the corners of her
mouth. The smiley 13 year old giggled and pulled me into their
circle. "Like I was saying," Carolina continued.
"I think Aaron is getting very
immature."
During registration, my form tutor introduced
me to my class. "Dakota, welcome to 8B! I'm sure
you'll love it here. Tell us a little about yourself."
Mr Harris smiled and nudged me slightly. "Um, well I'm
13, 14 in October, and, er, I have been home schooled since I was
5 and I like to play violin." I managed to stutter. I began
to walk to the nearest spare chair when Mr Harris said
"Wait! We're doing a little swap around. We sit in
alphabetical order. So if everyone can stand
up?"
well, do y'all like
it?
