The Angel Earns Her Devil
Horns
Prologue.
"Amber, your breakfast is
getting cool!" I hear my mom scream from the kitchen
downstairs.
Today is the first day of my attendance at Skyline High School.
My dad got a job offer and we travelled half way across the
country. I guess I like Oregon better than Minnesota. It's a
good change.
"I can't decide what to wear!" I yell back at my
mom. I want to make a good impression, but I want to be modest. I
close my eyes and run my fingers across my shirts hanging on
hangers and randomly choose one. I pull out my pink-orange blouse
my Step-Dad got me for my birthday a few months ago. From there,
I put on a pair of black skinny's, my leopard TOM's, and
a pair of earrings that belong to my ex-best friend.
I race down the stairs, finding my mom and brother sitting at the
table. I take my seat, and while doing that my mother was giving
me a look I didn't quite understand.
"Are you ready for your first day at a new school,
Amber?" my mother asked me as she took a bite of
oatmeal.
"No. I won't know anybody, and I don't know my way
around the school. Just the usual 'new girl' that
everyone glares at in the halls." I said, peeling a banana.
Oatmeal doesn't sound too good.
"Well you look beautiful today. You shouldn't worry,
when I drove past Skyline the other day, the girls I saw
didn't have any style at all. I don't think you should
worry one bit." My mom always knows how to get a grin on my
face.
I smile at her as I stand up and grab my brown leather bag.
"I should get going, I'll see you after school," I
mumble to my mom as I adjust my earring. "What time do you
want me home?"
My question was interrupted by a phone call she recieved. She
told me to wait a minute, but knowing my mom she'd be talking
to her friend for hours.
I run up to my room and grab my phone. I have a text from my
friend, Jamie, asking how everything is going. I haven't seen
her since the day I left Minnesota. I'll just call her
later.
As I'm heading out the door, my brother, Grant, threw a grape
at me from the kitchen.
"Not cool, Grant!" I say, jokingly. He stuck his tongue
out at me, acting like a 10 year old. It's hard to believe
he's going to be 14 in two months.
I close the front door behind me. I walk to my car, noticing my
new surroundings. "This is your new life, get used to
it." I still can't process the thought through my
head.
I notice a tall, dirty blonde boy standing in his doorstep across
the street, reading a book. He's kind of cute, thank God
he's my neighbor. I look down at the ground and slowly head
for my car. I put the key in the lock, it wouldn't turn. I
kept struggling, fearing that he would look over and think
I'm a freak. Just to my luck, the door opens. But with
that,
my bag with all my papers and registration fly everywhere onto my
driveway.
I stand there for a moment, not sure what to do. I glance over,
of course he's looking.
I bend down politely and start gathering my scattered belongings.
When I look up, there's a tall dirty blonde helping me
retrieve my papers.
"Need some help unlocking your car?" He asks me.
I just nod, unsure of what to say.
He takes the key already in the lock and turns it. It opens right
away.
"My name's Kolby. Nice to meet you, neighbor," he
said, happily smiling at me.
"I'm Amber, nice to meet you!" I say, a bit too
giddish.
He chuckled, and handed me the last of my papers I dropped.
"Well thanks for helping, I need to get to school," I
say, turning to my car.
"Are you going to Skyline? If so, I can give you a ride, if
you need one." He said, pointing to his car parked across
the street.
"Yeah I'm going to Skyline. Thanks, but I can drive
myself." I knew it was a sign of flirting: something I
wasn't ready for.
"Okay, I'll see you at school." He said, turning on
his heels heading back to his house.
I just wave goodbye.
