Mine
Chapter One - Summer
Time
“Woo! School's
over!” my best friend Casey screamed, running out of the
school, dancing around wildly. I laughed at her, running too, my
schoolbag bouncing against my back.
Everyone was laughing and shouting. Well, why wouldn't they
be? We were free, for three whole months, after spending ages
studying and doing tests and homework and having no social life.
Now, we were free!
Our parents had agreed to let me and Casey go out into town after
school. The sun was shining, and we had some money in our
pockets.
“So, where do you want to go?!” Casey grinned,
jumping onto the school wall.
I shrugged. “I honestly don’t know, Cas, you’re
the one who knows the insides out of this town.”
She patted the side of the wall and I hauled myself up there,
sitting beside her. “How about The Cosmic
Café?”
I rolled my eyes at her playfully. The Cosmic Café was a
small place downtown. It sold coffee, ice cream, cakes, scones,
sweets – everything sweet and traditional. It was a hotspot
for the local teenagers who headed there every Friday. I’d
never been there, but Casey had – and a lot of times,
too.
“Come on, Claire-Bear, it’ll be fun!” she
whined. “Coffee and cute guys – it’s every
girls dream!”
I sighed. “Cas, you know I’m not interested in dating
or guys yet.”
“Well, you’d like the food, anyway!” Casey
nudged me, so I finally gave in. Not because of the food, or
anything. Just because my friend was pestering
me…honest!
It was really hot and our grubby school jackets were sticking to
us. We decided to take them off and wrap them around
ourselves.
When we finally got there it was bustling with noise. As Casey
opened the door a fresh wind blew into my face as the smell of
coffee and tea filled up the room. I glanced around. Teenagers,
everywhere. Girls with short skirts. Guys flirting with them,
making perverted jokes. What a great way to start off the
summer.
“Over here!” Casey grabbed me by the arm and dragged
me over to a small table, two seats either side, by the
windowsill.
I sat down awkwardly, as Casey dropped her bag exhaustedly and
plunked down in the seat, stuffing a menu into my face.
I studied the menu and mumbled “I guess I’ll get an
ice cream.”
“Scone and cold glass of water for me.” piped up
Casey.
We headed up to the desk. Casey had told me about the lady who
served the food; Magda, a kind old woman who gave you free
coupons and mints after each purchase.
But who we saw in front of us wasn’t old. Wasn’t even
a woman.
A ‘cute’ guy, as Casey would call it, stood at the
desk. He had chocolate brown eyes and caramel hair which was
slightly tousled.
“Hey,” he smiled at us.
I was speechless. Casey, however, cut to the chase.
“Where’s Magda?” she insisted.
“Magda? Oh, you mean gran! I’m her grandson, my
name’s Ethan. She had me run the shop, because, you know,
her arthritis is getting worse by the day. And you ladies
are…?”
“Oh, right. I’m Casey.” Casey smirked at
him.
“Hi, Casey.” He replied, then tilted his head to the
side. “And you are?”
I looked around the room dumfoundedly, trying to find out who he
was saying that to, then nearly slapped myself when I realized he
was asking me.
“I’m Claire,” I stammered.
“Claire-Bear.” Added Casey.
“Cute! I like it.” Ethan beamed. He took our
orders and handed us our food on a tray.
“Thank you,” I said to him.
“No problem. Do you come here often?” he
murmured.
“Yeah, I do.” Casey told him obnoxiously.
“Claire-Bear is more of the introvert.”
“Aw.” Ethan nodded. “Well, please visit me
every so often, so I’m not lonely. Pleeease?” he
simpered, pulling a puppy face.
“I’ll think about it.” I laughed, as we headed
up to our table.
Author's Note:
Hi! I hope you liked my story so far! This is just going to be a
draft, during the summer {ironically} when I have time, I'll
be rewriting it properly {adding more details} and posting it up
on WattPad. What did you think of the chapter? Do you have any
suggestions for me? Have a great day!
