Firefly
Chapter
2
I sluggishly made my way down the hallway and into the kitchen.
Grandma sat in her wheelchair knitting over the counter, and she
slowly turned her worn, bony face to mine. “Good morning,
Lizzie.”
“Morning,” I told her with a smile, pulling out the
chair next to my niece.
“Elizabeth, you sleep in so late,” Kayla
told me.
“I had a late night,” I explained to the little 9
year old, rubbing her bald head.
Kayla was a very unique little girl. Ever since she was little,
she requested she have her head shaved. Not to honor cancer
patients or as some sort of tribute, only because she liked the
way it looked. I liked it on her, though. It brought out her
golden eyes only my mother and sister had. It was kind of like a
little piece of them that stayed with me.
“How was work last night?” the 80-year-old
woman in the wheelchair asked.
“Brutal,” I moaned.
“How old was he?”
“Like, 50.”
“Oh,” Grandma sighed, putting her needles down on the
counter. “I’m sorry.”
I shrugged, standing. “Gotta do what you gotta do to get
by.”
She nodded, agreeing with me. Grandma had always been supportive
of whatever I wanted, even prostitution. She said it was my body,
and I had a right to do whatever the hell I wanted with it. She
had been my best friend for my entire life.
“Liz?” she asked.
“Yeah?”
“When are you planning on popping out a great grandbaby? I
haven’t got forever.”
I smiled at her. “No boyfriends for me,” I told her.
“Work first.” I made my way back down the hall, away
from them.
“But I don’t even like the one I got!” she
teased, nudging Kayla, who giggled at her.
I sighed. “I’m gunna run to Starbucks with Daniel,
okay? I’ll be back later.”
“Danny!” Grandma shouted. “Danny would make a
good boyfriend!”
“He would,” I told her, grabbing my keys and kissing
her wrinkled forehead, “If he liked girls.”
Grandma looked at me through her glasses. She was a skinny old
thing with grey curled hair and gnarled fingers, but she acted as
young as she could. “Whatever works,” she said,
flashing a grin.
I smiled at them both. “Alright, bye guys,” I told
them before hopping out the door.
“Bye, Liz!” Kayla called.
I waved to them from my old car as I backed out of the
driveway.
Can I just thank you guys like
real quick for thoroughly accepting me back? I'm going to
tell you right now, I won't be on forever, no promises on
being loyal, I don't know when I'll need another break or
when I'll leave for good. I've lost many followers, and
gained a few back; I'm almost at 1,000 again. But, just,
thanks (:
