I had only been walking for about five minutes when i got the feeling i was being followed. As soon as I fled the restaurant, I checked my purse and realized I didn't have my MetroCard for the subway, and I didn't have even remotely enough money for a cab. So I kept walking, and did what I've always been told to do in a situation like this. Make a turn, cross the street, accelerate into a nearby business. Well, my version at least. I walked a few more feet and turned the corner, glancing behind me to see if the boy was still there, my vision didn't fail me. I grabbed the pepper spray out of my bag and stood against the building, waiting for him to turn into spraying distance. As soon as he rounded the corner, the spray exploded into his eyes.
"AH! What did you do to me?!" He covered his eyes and doubled over in pain.
"What were you planning to do to me?!" I demanded, ready to spray again if need be.
"What are you talking about! I'm not some sort of kidnapper! I'm just going back to my apartment! The building right there." I turned around and looked at the brick building. It was mine, too. I just sprayed my neighbor in the face, for no reason. Oops.
"Oh.." I didn't really know what to say, they don't exactly make Hallmark cards for this. I reached into my bag returning the bottle. "Don't touch it. you're only making it worse, the bottle was nearly empty anyway. It'll be over in five minutes." I pulled his hands away from his face and he opened his eyes, locking our eyes for the first time.
"Uh, what happened to your hand.." I looked down at my hands, which were holding his. I quickly let go and saw that my right hand was slightly swollen and bruised, nothing horrific. I couldn't help but laugh at myself a little bit. He smiled too, for some reason.
"Oh, uh. I kind of um.. hit someone.."
"Oh god, who?"
"My boyfriend.."
"Boyfriend, huh?"
"Well, ex-boyfriend now."
"Sheesh, I can only imagine why."
"It was for a good purpose!"
"Why don't you tell me about it on the way to the hospital.."
"Oh, really, I can go myself."
"But I want to, I think I might have to be checked out too."
"Hey," I hit him in the arm with my good hand, "I thought you were going to kidnap me!"
He laughed at me and shook his head, leading the way to the emergency room.
