How To
Love
Chapter One
Sage's POV
Cara
James has been my best friend for longer than I could remember.
We met the
freshman year of highschool: It was the summer on my first year
of living in Florida. I
had gotten out of my car to go into my house, and there I saw
her. She was across the street,
sitting with her chin cupped in her hands, sitting on the front
steps of a big, victorian
house with red shutters.
She kept staring at me as I walked inside to my new
freshly-painted house that smelled
of paint and hard-wood. I wanted to get as quickly out of it as
possible: As soon as everything
was un-packed, I would take a walk downtown. That was my plan, it
wouldn't change.
As soon as I stepped back outside with my old Converse on, a
tank, and short jean shorts,
Cara was right there. She had long, blonde hair, and she was
extremely tan. She had
piercings all up her ears and hand a ring on every finger. Cara
was wearing a
peach colored sun dress that was very short, and had no makeup
on, but was just
naturally beautiful.
"Hi," I said to her.
"Hey," she replied.
"I'm Sage.." I said flattly.
"Cara. Do you want to go downtown and get some Slurpees or
something?"
And from that moment on, I knew Cara James would be my best
friend.

Brooklyn Boarding School was not, in fact, located in Brookyn.
Hell, I wish it was, but
no: It was smack dab in the middle of Georgia.
With only one year left of high school, I planned to make it the
best.
Luckily, Cara's dad was able to make us share a dorm. He also
got us one of the bigger
dorms, making it one of a popular hang out after classes.
Brooklyn was like any other high school; big, grand, and the
people fell into categories,
like normally. Lucky for me, I promised myself I wouldn't get
dragged into Brookyn's
crap, and decided to focus mainly on my grades and volleyball.
Relationships with
people other than Cara and my teacher's just weren't on
my agenda at the moment.
Unlike Cara, who was probably the most popular cheerleader in the
school, and
hooked up with guy after guy. Her life honestly made me sick: She
was basically failing
two classes, and only cared about cigarettes and boys.

As I sat criss-crossed on my bed, doing homework and listening to
The Real Slim Shady,
Cara was distractly talking on the phone, loudly and
obnoxiously.
"Cara," I snapped. "I'm trying to do
homework."
She said good-bye to her friend and looked at me.
"Sage, honestly. What is your problem? Live a little. Get a
boyfriend, or even just a
friend," she smirked.
I was about ready to pull her cute little pigtails out of her
airhead.
But before I could do that, there was a loud, pounding knock on
our cherry wood door.
Without a 'come in' from either one of us, a tall, black
haired girl with many tattoos
placed all around her body came stroming in.
"Cara!" She screamed. "Where were you? I told you,
this practice was important-"
"Coach Britt," Cara looked worried. "I am so
sorry-"
"If you miss one more practice, I swear, you'll be
kicked off the squad. Clear?" Britt snapped.
"Crystal," Cara mumbled.
The door slammed behind Britt, making the dorm shake.
I stared at Cara. "Really? You can't even keep up with
cheer?"
Cara smiled. "I'm the captain, she won't kick me
off."
With that, Cara dialed a number, and started to blab on the phone
again.
