Chapter
27
“Ready?” Ashley asked me when I
turned around. I nodded and we started walking down the hall,
away from Kate.
Ashley started asking me more about my schedule. It turns out
that we also have English together, but that was all. I was
really hoping that we would have lunch together so I
wouldn’t end up sitting alone in the bathroom or
something.
While we were walking and talking, I noted a few things about my
new school. The students were not very friendly, in fact, I found
kids here are ruder than back in my old home town. Maybe it was
just my school in Colorado, but I thought people were supposed to
apologize when they run into you or hold the door open for you if
you were one foot behind them.
I also noticed that the hallways were always crowded, even when
there was only a minute left until the bell was going to ring.
And the hallways were crowded with groups of people, small groups
usually and sometimes a large group.
This school seemed clique-y, like you
wouldn’t be able to go up to a group and introduce yourself
without being judged and feeling completely humiliated. At my
last school, I could go up to anyone (well almost anyone) and
feel completely comfortable. Some “Goths” were
friends with “Preps” and some “Skaters”
were friends with “Jocks”.
We entered the cafeteria, which was big,
blue, and crazy. There were random lines, groups of chatter-y
kids, and loud noises coming from the kitchen area. All of the
blue tables were round and placed all over the huge
space.
Ashley and I started walking toward a
man sitting alone at one of the tables. He had black hair and
wore a pinstripe blue button down with a red tie. He was young
and without a doubt gorgeous. Even from ten feet away, I could
see his hazel eyes sparkle as he talked to a student. I suddenly
remembered that this must be the teacher Ashley was telling me
about…Mr. Mallen.
“He’s gorgeous!” I whispered to Ashley as we
approached him, who was right by my side. She nodded her head
enthusiastically and made a motion of fanning her
face.
“Hello ladies, what can I do for
you?” Mr. Mallen asked us, in a silk voice that made my legs
feel like noodles.
I smiled dumbfounded while Ashley told him,
“We’re here to sign in, and I’m Ashley
Waters.” She put her manicured finger on his
attendance list and slid it down until her
name.
He raised his eyebrows, smiled, and then
looked up at me, his eyes bore straight into mine. I tried to
remember how to breathe and just stared at him like a maniac.
Ashley bumped my ribs with her elbow, and I finally recalled my
name.
“Uh, I’m Allison Rogers” I tried to smile, but
just felt like an idiot. He looked on his clipboard and then put
a check mark next to my name.
“Thank you ladies” As he said
this he looked straight up to Ashley and she replied “no
problem” and swear I saw her wink at him.
She quickly grabbed my hand and pulled me
away. I was about to confront her about being a major flirt with
a teacher, until Ashley took me to another
table.
