A Chance
Encounter
Chapter Eighteen
We stood on the steps in our tight embrace
for five or ten more minutes until we realized that the rain had
started pouring down on us. I laughed as I looked up to the clouded
night sky.
“What is it?” Niall asked,
pushing a strand of my soaking wet hair away from my
face.
“It’s just… This stuff is
supposed to happen in movies like The Notebook, not in my
life. It’s crazy.” I laughed some
more.
“You deserve a life like those movies
though, Addie.” Niall whispered as he kissed me
softly. I
blushed.
“I always hoped it would be,” I confessed. I paused for
a few moments before continuing. “Do you wanna come up to my
flat? You can dry off and wait for Harry to bring Beck back instead
of calling one of the other boys,” I
suggested.
“I’d like that.” Niall
smiled. He took my hand and we continued to climb the stairs until
we reached the entrance of the building.
“Okay, so I don’t know exactly
who all lives in my building, so I apologize in advance if any
screaming fangirls see you.” I laughed.
“As long as we’re together,
everything will be alright,” Niall said, pushing the door
open and leading me inside.
The lobby was relatively empty, except for
the creepy guy at the front desk. He was about 20 or 21 years old,
with greasy, slicked back hair, and the slightest
‘beard’. I didn’t even know his name, but he hit
on me and Rebecca constantly. Not all British men are nice; this
guy was sleazy. I hated walking into the building alone because I
was scared that one day he might try to pick me up or
something.
“Hey there, love. Who’s the
bloke? I thought we had something special.” He sneered,
looking down his huge nose at me and jerked a thumb at Niall and we
passed his desk.
“Don’t call him a bloke,
dirtbag.” I shot back. “He’s a friend. And we had
nothing. You being a creep does not qualify as
‘something’. Now, if you’ll excuse us,
we’ll be leaving now.” I grabbed Niall’s hand and
ran to the elevator.
As the doors slid closed, I heard an
obnoxious voice call to me. “You know you want this,
babe!”
“Ugh.” I gagged as Niall howled
with laughter. After a few seconds, I started laughing, too. His
laugh was contagious.
“Uhh… Addie?” Niall
asked, trying to catch his breath.
“Yeah?” I
replied.
“What floor do you live on?” He
smiled. I looked to the left of the elevator doors and realized
that I hadn’t pressed the button for my
floor.
“I had wondered why the elevator
hadn’t started moving!” I said as I leaned over and
pushed the grimy number 13, making it light up. I could hear gears
whirring as the elevator started to rise.
“Lucky number thirteen, eh?”
Niall said in his Irish lilt.
“Actually, it is my lucky
number!”
“Really? I was born on the
thirteenth,” Niall said. As if I didn’t already
know that.
“I know!” I blurted out without
thinking, then mentally slapped myself. “Oh God. I
didn’t mean to say that. Let’s pretend you didn’t
hear that.” I blushed, which made Niall
laugh.
“Hear what?” He pretended to
look confused.
“Exactly.” I said as the
elevator chimed, signaling that we had reached my floor. As the
doors started to open, Niall reached over and hit the switch that
made the doors close.
“Why did you do th—“ I was
interrupted by his lips, which had found mine in the dimly lit
chamber.
After a few moments, we broke
apart.
“Oh… That’s
why…” I mumbled, blushing yet again as the doors
reopened.
