It was years ago,
I was 12 years old. I had stayed after-school because
my mom was always busy. My dad was at work. Two
hours later it was time to leave. I always walked
home. It was always peaceful. But, this time
would end in tragedy. It had rained and the ground
was wet. Puddles of water and mud scattered
everywhere. I passed a small brick house and realized
the smell of smoke was coming from up ahead.
I ran to find its
source. Something was burning. Gasoline, it
smelled like. I rounded a corner to see a blue
minivan upside down. My mom’s blue
minivan…
“Stay awake
Madeline. Please, stay awake.” My
dad’s voice cracked. He was in
tears.
“Dad!
Mom!” I scream running towards the
wreck.
“Madison,
go get help.” I heard my dad yell before I
reached him. I ran back down the road. To the
closest house there was. The small brick
house.
“Help, call
9-1-1, my mom’s hurt!” I screamed banging
on the door. A boy about my age opened it, I later
learned his name was Mason. Tears were streaming down
my face. “Help.” I said
again. He looked confused but grabbed the nearest
phone and did call 9-1-1. By the time the ambulance
had arrived. My dad was trying to comfort my
mother. Lying on the ground.
He looked
fine. Like I had, He was having a hard time breathing
but it was nothing compared to the mom. Her arm was
twisted unnaturally and she was bleeding, a lot. Her
chest was barely moving. Her eyes close to being
shut. She would be dead before she reached the
hospital. I would be left alone with the killer of my
mom, his wife. Yet, I still didn’t
know.

I opened my eyes. Putting the memory back, far
away. The hospital parking lot had very few cars in
it. I took a deep shakey breath.
I climbed out of the car, walking towards the main
entrance. Ms. Lincomfelt was right behind me.
"Chasten Lincomfelt?" The attendant
asked as we entered. I nodded. "Room 247,
he's probably sleeping, so please don't wake
him." I nodded again and walked down the
hall. Finally finding the room.
I opened the door softly and saw Chasten sitting up,
reading. He smiled as I entered and put the book
down.
"Oh, thank god, you're alright. I say
running over to him. Not giving him a hug, afraid
that I might hurt him.
"Duh, this is Chasten we're talking
about." He says, referring to himself in
third-person. I smile, he can make a joke at the
worst of times.
"Nothing broken?" I ask.
"Nope."
Ms. Lincomfelt butts in. "Oh, I forgot, I
got something for you Chasten, but left it in the
car. I'll be right back."
"No." I say. "I'll
get it."
I walk out of the room and head for the main
doors. Volunteering to get whatever it was she forgot
was a mistake......
