Chapter
4
I grudgingly went out
of the restaurant, after Marissa's spawn. I found her
outside, a cigarette dangling from her mouth.
I leant up against the bin with my back to her. 'I'm
guessing your mom doesn't know.'
'I thought I told you not to talk to me.' she spat. I
swear, this kid seems to have anger as her only emotion.
'Oh okay. I guess I'll just go ask her if she wants
one.' I turned round to face her with my eyebrows raised, and
by her expression could tell she knew I'd won. I stared at
her, daring her to repeat what she'd just said.
She exhaled and the smoke spiralled upwards into the sky. 'I
don't want to have anything to do with you. I don't want
Mom to get married.'
'Neither do I, kiddo,' I said, perching on the bin.
'Neither do I. But there's nothing we can do to stop them
so we may aswell make the most of it.'
I heard a sharp intake of breath. 'But there is something we
can do!'
I turned to her and raised my eyebrows in disbelief. 'What,
split them up, parent-trap style?' I asked sarcasrtically.
She obviously didn't notice my sarcasm and nodded earnestly.
'Listen, I know you're just a kid, but you should really
know that stuff doesn't actually work.'
'But it might!' she exclaimed indignantly.
I thought for a second, considering how to play it.
'Okay,' I said slowly. 'We'll give it a try.'
I swear, as I said that, her whole face lit up. Maybe she does
have an emotion except anger after all. 'But if it
doesn't work, we'll leave them alone.' She nodded.
'So if nothing's happened in a week, that's it.
We're never talking about this again.'
Her face fell. 'A week is no where near long enough!'
I sighed. 'Fine, two weeks. Not that it'll make any
difference..' I added under my breath.
'So we have a deal?' she asked. 'You give me two
weeks then we do it your way.'
I nodded with a smile. I never thought she could be this civil.
'Deal,' I agreed. 'What's your name anyways?'
I hopped off the bin and she followed, putting out her cigarette
on it.
'Charline, but call me that and die,' she glared at me
again.
'Okay,' I paused. 'Charlie.' She grinned at me as
we walked back inside.

Chapter 3
I sat back in my chair and sighed,
pretending to listen to Marissa’s "great new
idea" for a "family vacation" this
summer.
It’s not that I
don’t like her or anything, she’s just
too…peppy.
Always coming up with
activites for us to do.
"Ha, good luck
getting Mason to do that" I muttered under my breath
when Marissa mentioned something about "trust
exercises" and "family bonding".
The waiter came, and
gave us our menus.
Whoa, that’s more
than I make from three months of babysitting! I thought when I looked at the
price of the food I wanted to order. Now I know why this restaurant is
so fancy!
I felt weird ordering
something so expensive, so when the waiter came around the second
time to take our orders, I just ordered the $20 salad.
As I was waiting for
our food to arrive, I amused myself by surveying the people
around the room.
Too old, too old, too
young- Yuck! Too ugly… and that’s when I saw
him.
The boy sitting 2
tables away from me.
With his sandy-brown
hair that fell over his face in the perfect style bangs, and his
crystal-clear blue eyes that just seemed to go on, and on
forever…
"What are
you looking at?" snapped
Marissa’s youngest daughter, who I had yet to learn her
name of.
I realized that the boy
I was looking at was in the little "window" that was
the space between the girl’s head and the wall. I guess she
thought that I was staring at her.
"Oh, nothing. See
I was just looking-" I started.
"Look, I do NOT
want to be here. I do NOT want my mom to get married to your dad,
and I do NOT want to be part of this ‘picture perfect
family!" She cut me off.
"Got it? So
don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, don’t
include me in any of your ‘perfect family bonding
times’. Okay?" She snapped.
"Look, I
wasn’t trying to st-" She cut me off again.
"What part of do
NOT talk to me don’t you understand?!" She yelled at
me.
"Now, honey, calm
down…" Said Marissa.
"NO! Okay? Look,
this stupid ‘super lovey-dovey’ family of yours? It
is NOT going to work!" She screamed at her mother, while
standing up so abruptly that she knocked her plate and silverware
to the floor.
"Oh
dear…" muttered Marissa as she bent down to pick up
the fallen dinnerware.
Her daughter looked
around at the shocked faces of the other diners all staring at
her, then began to cry and stormed out of the dining
area.
"Krystal!" My
dad ‘yell-whispered’ at me. "You go and talk to
her."
"But
dad…" I began.
"But nothing! We
are going to be a family, and you need to learn how to help each
other out!" He snapped at me.
I sighed and slowly
stood up.
Things certainly
weren’t going as easily as I hoped they would.

Chapter
2
~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a long car ride in silence,
we arrived at the fancy resteraunt. I was glad I had dressed up
for this dinner.
"Okay, you three, can you at least try to make conversation
with Marissa and her daughters?"
"Why? I don't want to get to know them." My brother
mumbled. My dad shot him a look and continued.
"Her daughter, Scarlett is your age, Krystal, and
Marissa's other daughter is 13. So, Lauren, talk to her about
Barbies or something."
"Dad! I stopped playing with Barbies like, two years
ago!" Lauren said.
"Well then talk to her about whatever, just try to be
nice!" My dad looked desperate at this point. "Oh,
there they are, let's go!"
We all got out of the car, and faced this new family we were
supposed to embrace. Marissa was a shorter woman, but still
skinny. She had copper colored curly hair, and I thought it
looked nice with her pale skin. I wasn't quite sure it was
natural though. Her oldest daughter, Scarlett, had long blonde
hair. It wasn't quite as long as my own, but she was getting
there. She was taller than her mother, but skinny as well. Her
younger sister, who I hadn't learned her name yet, had blonde
hair like her sister. Except her eyes were more green then her
sister's blue.
"Hi, I'm Scarlett," she said, waving. The two
families had stopped about two feet away from each other, while
my father and Marisa embraced.
"I'm Krystal," I said, waving back. "This is
Lauren," I said, pointing to my sister who had always been
shy. "And Mason," I nodded towards my brother, who had
hung back looking uninterested. "Don't mind him, his
girlfriend just dumped him," I said, laughing. She joined in
and smirked at my brother.
"Poor thing! He must be heart broken to be in such a bad
mood."
My brother glared at me and I laughed again. Scarlett seemed like
a really nice person, but I hadn't heard a peep from her
younger sister. "And who are you?" I asked her, but she
ignored me.
"I'm sorry, I don't know where her manners
are," Scarlett said apologetically.
"It's fine, it's a little bit of an uncomfortable
situation for us all," I shrugged.
"Kids, this is Marissa." My dad said, joining our
conversation.
"Hi girls!" She said, giving Lauren and me a hug.
"Hi Mason," she said, waving at my brother. "I
won't hug you, but it's nice to meet you all." She
stood there smiling like a goofball. This lady was kinda off.
"Well, let's go eat," my dad said, herding us into
the doors. We all fell into an awkward line, with Marissa and my
dad leading the way. My dad wrapped his arm around her waist and
whispered in her ear, and she giggled. I almost threw up on the
floor right there.
"Get a room," I heard Mason grumble, and I laughed.
When we sat down, we were again divided. Lauren to my left, Mason
to my right, and Dad at one end. The three girls sat opposite us.
The younger daughter was still not talking, but Lauren was trying
to coax her into conversation. Scarlett was trying to get Mason
to respond to her useless chatter, then Marissa turned towards
me.
"So, Krystal, tell me about yourself."
"Well I'm a sophmore, and I love to draw."
"Oh, how nice! Do you like to draw anything in
particular?"
I shrugged and took a sip of water. "Really whatever comes
to mind. I like to read too, mostly fantasy."
She nodded, "I like to read too, I was reading something the
other day..." I tuned her out when I saw my dad trying to
talk to Scarlett's sister. She pointedly ignored him, and I
could tell my dad was trying to make an effort.
"Excuse me, he's trying to talk to you," I said to
her, and she looked at me.
"I don't care," she said.
"Well I do if you're ignoring him. You could at least
pretend to talk," I had learned that in the early stages of
my parent's divorce. If you pretend to talk long enough, they
will leave you alone.
"I said, I.don't.care!" she yelled at me, and I was
stunned. This was going to be a long
dinner.
Chapter
1
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I
stare into the mirror at my crystal blue eyes, with so many
thoughts spinning in my head. I continue to straighten my waist
length long black hair when there’s a knock on my door.
"Come in," I say without turning away from the
mirror.
"Krystal, mom said dad will be here in fifteen minutes, are
you ready?" my little sister said. My sisters name was
Lauren. She was so pretty, she’s only twelve years old and
has long brown hair and brown eyes, with naturally tanned skin.
She loves sports and isn’t your typical girly girl. But
tonight, she looked different. She was wearing makeup for the
first time, just a little to highlight her eyes. She was wearing
a black ruffle skirt that came right above her knee and a yellow,
pink, and black flowing shirt.
"Yeah, just a minute," I answered as I turned off my
straightener. Lauren was already on her way downstairs. I turned
to take on last look in the mirror at my black skinny jeans and
blue tank top with black pumps.
When I got downstairs I found my older brother, Mason, and Lauren
sitting in the kitchen talking to my mom.
"Mom, I don’t want to go. I’m almost eighteen
years old, I shouldn’t have to go meet dad’s new
girlfriend, my brother snapped.
"Mason, your father wants you there, and I think it’s
best that you meet this woman and her children at least once
before the wedding next month."
"Whatever," Mason shot back as he rolled his eyes and
walked in the other room.
My big brother Mason is 17, only two years older than me. With
the same blue eyes and jet black hair as me. He used to be the
sweetest guy I knew. Sure we had our arguments, but most of the
time he was always nice, to everyone. He’s always been
popular in school, and the football quarter back, but that never
changed his charming attitude towards everyone. But that big
brother I once loved, was gone. After our parents got divorced a
year ago, he was a different person. Always fighting with me and
Lauren, his perfect grades dropped, and he broke all of our moms
rules.
"Dad’s outside," Mason called from the family
room. Lauren, my mom, and I headed for the door. Us three kids
left while my mom stood by the door and waved.
We began to drive to a fancy restaurant right out of town, near
my dad’s new apartment. He told us that his fiancée
Marissa is meeting us there with her two daughters
