A Summer
to Remember
Chapter
5
The next morning I was sitting at the kitchen
counter, watching an episode of The Price is Right while Anthony
made me breakfast. Anthony was my dad’s personal chef, and
although I insisted on making my own breakfast, Anthony said he
wouldn’t allow it. He only let my dad make his own meals
when he asked. My dad had to go film some more interviews, so he
was going to be gone the whole day.
“So what are you planning on doing tomorrow night?”
Anthony asked me as he cracked two eggs into a frying pan. They
sizzled when they hit the surface.
I muted the TV. “Why? What’s tomorrow night?” I
asked him.
He took little cubes of ham and sprinkled them all around the
eggs. “Tomorrow is the fourth of July!” he exclaimed.
“It’s my favorite holiday. I love all of the colorful
fireworks,” he added.
Right, tomorrow was the fourth of July. I had completely
forgotten. I suddenly felt my heart breaking a little, because
this was the first fourth of July that I wasn’t going to be
spending with my best friend, Anna. Then I smiled to myself,
imagining what it would be like watching the fireworks with
James.
I looked over at Anthony, who was still expecting my answer of
what I was doing tomorrow night. “I think I know who I want
to spend it with, but I’m not sure where. Are there any
special fireworks shows?” I asked him.
He smiled as he started finishing up my omelet. “Why yes!
There are fireworks launched over Marina Del Ray in between
Fisherman’s Village and Breakwater. They are
amazing,” he told me.
“Perfect!” I said. I hopped up from my chair and ran
to my phone. I went straight to James’ contact and hit the
message icon.
Kayla: Hey James!
It’s Kayla, from the airport (:
I nervously waited for his response.
James: Hi Kayla! I was
waiting for u to txt me. I wasn’t sure if u got the sticky
note w/ my #.
Kayla: Lol, yeah I got
it(: r u doing anything for the 4th of July
tomorrow?
James: Not yet..y? Do u
want to hang out?
Kayla: Yeah! Do u want to
go see the fireworks over Marina Del Ray? They start at
9.
James: Sure. My aunt and
uncle live right near there. We can come back to their house and
go swimming or whatever after.
Kayla: Sounds great(:
I’ll meet u at the fireworks show at around
8?
James: Yeah, that’s
good.
Then I walked back into the
kitchen to see my omelet sitting in front of my chair with a
glass of fresh orange juice and a side of fruit waiting for me to
dive in. Half-way through eating my omelet, I dropped my fork and
my jaw dropped.
I had just made a date with
James.
This summer was definitely going to be the best one
yet.

A Summer

Chapter
4
“That was a lot of
fun, Dad,” I said to my dad when we got home from Universal
Studios.
“I’m glad you liked it!” he said back.
“I’ll whip us up some ice cream sundaes. I think I
remember your favorite flavor,” he said with a smile. He
walked off into the giant kitchen and started opening and closing
various cabinets in search of ingredients.
I nodded my head. I figured I could just watch some TV. I went
into the living room and sat down on one of the white leather
bean bags and switched on the TV. An LA news channel was on. They
had a picture of a new movie poster titled “The Summer
Call” in the upper right hand corner. The reporter was a
woman around twenty-five years old. She had bright green eyes and
curly blonde hair. She was stick skinny, but was still chesty. I
was jealous of her.
“This movie is bound to be a great hit and will be
premiering on Friday, July 17th. And guess what? We
have two tickets to the exclusive VIP screening, which will be
occurring on July 10th. Call in Tuesday morning at
eleven o’clock to win these tickets! It is very exciting to
announce that we also got an interview last Saturday with the
director, Mr. Sam Anderly, himself ,” the reporter
said.
My jaw dropped open. Sam Anderly? Sam Anderly was my dad’s
name. Two seconds later, my dad popped up on the TV screen in
front of me and his interview started.
“What is going on?” I asked, confused. I scrambled to
get the remote, which I had dropped when they said my
father’s name. I quickly turned up the volume.
“So I think this movie will be very appealing to the
teenage demographic. I’m thrilled for everyone to see
it!” he exclaimed.
Why was my dad on the TV? Why did my dad not mention that he was
directing a new movie? Was my dad famous? I was so
confused.
I muted the TV and jumped up from the beanbag. I walked right up
to the kitchen and charged in.
“Dad, why were you on TV? You directed a movie? When did
you direct this movie? Why didn’t you tell me you were
directing a movie?” I asked.
He looked up at me from the tubs of ice cream in front of him and
sighed. He put the scooper down on the counter. “I’m
sorry I didn’t tell you, Kay. I really wanted to, but your
mother and I thought it was best if you didn’t know. I was
going to surprise you at the VIP screening,” he told me.
“Shortly after I moved out here, my buddy Shane told me he
was producing a movie and he knew I was looking for a directing
job, so he offered me one.”
My jaw dropped open. “Shortly after you moved here?! You
moved out here two years ago!” I exclaimed. “I
can’t believe you didn’t tell me!”
“Kay, I’m sorry, but I really didn’t want you
going around bragging about it to anyone. That can get you into
all kinds of trouble,” he said.
I sat down on one of the kitchen counter stools, realizing he was
right. “Yeah, that’s true, Dad. I’m sorry I
yelled at you. I was just so confused,” I said.
He smiled and started finishing up the sundaes. “It’s
okay, Kay. And now since you know about it, you can invite a
friend to the VIP screening,” he told me.
My heart started beating as I thought about inviting James, but
then I started having second thoughts. He might think I was some
stuck up brat if he knew my dad was a big time director and we
lived in a mansion with a house keeper and our own
driver. On the other hand, maybe it wouldn’t matter to him.
But what if it did? I finally decided.
I had to keep this a secret from James.
♥
Ahaha. So yes. I know it
might seem like this story has so many odd twists & turns,
but I promise that it all ties
together!(:
A Summer

Chapter
3
“Have you figured out what you would like to do
today?” my dad asked, suddenly appearing in my doorway. I
looked over at the clock and realized it was already one
o’clock.
I had been fantasizing about what a day would be like with James.
Then I realized that my whole summer can’t be spent with
only one person. I faced my dad.
“Can we go to Universal Studios?” I asked him. I had
been to the Universal Studios in Florida, but never in
California. I loved how every ride and attraction was based off
of a movie.
My dad smiled and put his hands in his pockets. “Sure
thing, teeno. Let me change and we can get going,” he
responded.
He walked away from my door and I decided that I should change my
outfit too. I was wearing an outfit that people typically would
wear to an airport during the summer; a T-shirt with Soffee
shorts. Then I realized that my Pumas were still out in the
hallway, so I went to retrieve them.
“What should I wear?” I asked myself, standing inside
the walk-in closet. I pulled out a light blue Sugarlip. Then I
grabbed a pair of Hollister shorts and got changed. I looked in
the mirror and thought it was a simple and an appropriate outfit
for Universal.
Next, I had to battle my hair and makeup. I walked out of my
bedroom and down the hallway to find the bathroom. Once I found
it, I walked inside and was amazed at the size of it. It was the
size of my bedroom back in New York! I really didn’t
understand why one man would need all of this space.
I braided my light brown hair into a fishtail down the side of my
head and put on some waterproof mascara with blue eyeliner on my
water line to bring out my blue eyes. I shrugged. “Good
enough,” I told my reflection and turned off the bathroom
light.

chapter 2 - part

Then I noticed a little door next
to my bed. I walked over to it and pulled it open. Inside was a
giant walk in closet with hangers ready for me to put stuff
on.
I ran back downstairs. “Wow, dad, my room is
amazing!” I told him.
He smiled, pulling a grape off of the bunch on the kitchen
counter. “I’m glad you like it. So what do you want
to do today? I could take you sightseeing through the mountains,
we could go to the Santa Monica pier, or we could go to Universal
Studios. Whatever you want,” he asked.
“That all sounds great dad, but can I unpack first? I have
a ton of things since I’m going to be here for two months
and the sooner I can get it done, the better,” I
responded.
“Sure, I’ll bring your bags up for you,” he
said. He walked over to my suitcases and brought them all
upstairs at once.
I followed him and then got down on the floor to start
unpacking.
“Kay, I need to go on a business call in fifteen minutes so
if you need anything, press this button here and Annie will
assist you,” he told me.
I figured Annie was the housekeeper, so I nodded my head. He
smiled and walked back downstairs.
I started to take my clothes out one by one, fold them, and then
place them into the drawers. Once I finished that, I decided to
take everything out of my carryon as well. I unzipped my Coach
tote and dumped it all onto my bed. The last thing to fall out
was a pale yellow sticky note.
“What is that?” I asked myself. I picked it up and
unfolded it.
Kayla,
It was awesome meeting you and we should hangout sometime. Since
we’re both going to be here all summer, why don’t you
text me when you’re free?
516-504-7717.
James
I couldn’t help but squeal
a little as I danced around my room. James was one of the first
guys to notice me, and accept me for who I was, even when I had
makeup smeared all around my eye. My smile stretched ear to ear.
I ran across my large bedroom and grabbed my iPhone 4S. I copied
James’ number into my phone.
My finger hovered over the message button as I debated whether or
not to message him right away. I tossed my phone on my bed.
“I’ll text him tomorrow,” I told myself as I
did a belly flop onto my bed.

A Summer

chapter 2 - part
1
The limo started to slow down and
my heart started pounding. I couldn’t wait to see what my
dad’s house looked like.
“Okay,” my dad said, “you can open your eyes
now.”
I opened my eyes and let them adjust to the light. I unbuckled my
seatbelt and knelt on the seat to get a better view. His house
was huge. It had white stones outlining crème colored
cement walls. Above the door was a beautiful white balcony that
glistened in the sunlight.
Carlos came around to my side of the limo and popped open the
door. I hopped out and stared in awe at the house.
“Wow Dad, how do you afford this place?” I asked
him.
He shook Carlos’s hand and then turned to me. “Like I
told your mother, my job really took off. Plus, I live alone, so
I’m not paying as much for electricity or water,” he
explained.
I nodded my head. Carlos brought my bags over to my side.
“Here you go, Miss Kayla,” he said to me.
I smiled. “Thanks Carlos!” I exclaimed, putting my
fist out to him for a fist pound. He awkwardly obliged then
walked back to the limo. I shrugged and looked back at the
house.
“Ready to go inside?” My dad said, pulling the house
keys out of his pocket.
We walked over to the door and he unlocked it revealing the
inside. The floor was made out of white marble and there was a
white swan-shaped fountain sitting right in the foyer. I looked
to my right and saw a huge flat screen TV with chocolate brown
couches and white leather bean bags. Then to my left was a dining
room with a long mahogany table covered in a burgundy table
cloth.
“Your room is up the stairs to the left and the first door
on the right,” he told me.
I ran up the stairs in excitement. The door was closed so I
slowly opened it. I first noticed that the carpet was white, so I
slipped off my Pumas and left them in the hallway. I took a step
in and looked around the room. My comforter was a dusty rose
color and another huge flat screen TV hung on the wall across
from it. To the side was the newest version of the white colored
Mac laptop sitting on a white nightstand. I stood in the doorway
just amazed.

faves for chapter 2?(:
I watched all of the luggage go
around the carousel. There were all types of suitcases. Small
bags, big bags, multi-color bags, and I even saw a cardboard box.
Finally I spotted my suitcases and started to panic. My suitcases
weighed a ton, and I needed my mom to help me get them out of the
car, let alone a spinning carousel.
I looked around and spotted
James. I ran over to him. “James, can you help me grab my
bags, they’re the pink ones right there,” I pointed
to them as they passed us.
“Great, now I have to wait
another whole lap,” I said.
James wasn’t saying
anything so I turned around. He was gone. Just my luck. I walked
back over to where I was standing before and then I saw someone
walking with my suitcases. James was rolling them towards
me.
I raised my eye brows and smiled.
“Thanks James!” I said, taking the handles. “I
thought you just left me,” I said, and we both started
laughing.
Ten minutes later, while James
and I were leaning up against the wall, I saw my dad. He was
looking around for me, but there was a ton of people in the room,
so I decided to walk up to him since he clearly couldn’t
find me.
“Dad!” I yelled and
ran into his arms.
“Hey kiddo,” he said
to me, squeezing me into one of his famous dad hugs. “I
missed you. We have a lot of catching up to do! I have Carlos and
the limo waiting outside,” he told me.
I looked up at him.
“Who’s Carlos?” I asked.
He chuckled. “My driver,
kiddo,” he said.
He has a driver? I heard him and
mom talking on the phone about how his job had taken off, but I
didn’t know it had taken off to the point where he could
afford his own driver.
“That’s so cool
dad!” I said. “But can you stop calling me kiddo
please? I’m fourteen,” I told him.
He smiled. “Sure,
teeno,” he said. “Let me get this,” he said,
pulling on the handle of my suitcase. “Ready to
go?”
I turned around and saw James
wasn’t against the wall anymore. I looked out of the doors
and saw him riding away on his skateboard and then it registered
in my mind. He already had his bags with him and he wasn’t
even waiting for a ride. He was just waiting with me.

Chapter 1 ; Part 3
James and I talked for a long
time on the plane, but I started to get tired so I fell asleep
with my head against the window. The next thing I know, my
shoulder was being tapped on.
I rubbed my eyes and looked at James. “What? Where are
we?” I asked him.
He started laughing so hard that he wasn’t able to tell me
where we were.
I smiled, trying to go along with it. “What’s so
funny?” I asked him.
He pointed at me. “You just
smeared your makeup all around your eye,” he told
me.
I could feel my face burning with
embarrassment. I try so hard every morning to make sure I
don’t look like a raccoon when I apply my makeup, and then
I just mess it all up by rubbing my eye.
“Oops,” I said,
brushing it off with my index finger. “So where are
we?”
James pointed to the TV screen in
front of him that showed a map of the United States and where the
plane was throughout the flight. The little plane was directly
over Los Angeles.
I couldn’t believe I slept
for four hours straight on a plane. I was so excited to get to
Los Angeles, but nervous to see my dad, and upset that I
wasn’t going to see my friends.
“Hey, are you okay?”
James asked me.
“Please place your chairs
in their upright positions, fold up your tray tables, and fasten
your seatbelts, we are preparing for landing,” the flight
attendant said over the loud speaker.
I smiled. “Yeah, I’m
fine.” Then the plane started to dip below the clouds and I
looked out the window for the first time during the flight. I
could see the blocks, outlined in little squares. The houses
looked like mini marshmallows.
“Wow,” I
said.
James turned and looked out the
window with me. “So who are you meeting here?” James
asked.
The plane was closer to the
ground and we could make out the buildings now. “My
dad,” I told him. “What about you?”
“That’s cool. Do you
remember my dad in the elevator? Well, he’s on a business
trip here to LA and my aunt and uncle live here, so he’s
making me stay with them. But he needed to get to LA fast and the
only plane tickets available for his time slot were really
expensive. He never wants to bust his wallet, so he just bought
me a cheaper ticket on this plane,” he
explained.
I nodded my head. “What
about your mom?” I asked him.
He looked down at his hands,
which were folded in his lap. “She passed away last year
from cancer,” he told me.
I felt terrible. I felt like my
heart was breaking. I felt so bad for asking. “James,
that’s terrible, I’m so sorry,” I
responded.
He smiled a little out of the
right side of his mouth. “It’s okay, but thanks. So,
what’s your dad’s place like?”
I never even thought about that
myself. What was his place going to be like?
“Honestly, I have no idea. This is my first time visiting
him,” I said.
“Oh, cool,” James
said.
The plane started to shake when
we hit the ground and we slowed to a stop. We were finally here
and the sun was shining bright.
