Letting Go, Holding On
Chapter
III
We turned onto my new street and headed towards our house. It
wasn't as big as our home in California, but it was decent for
a family of three. I got out of the taxi and took my bags with
me. The air was very clean, and the sky was blue as the sea.
There weren't many cars on the road. I couldn't wait to head to
my room and video chat with Austin.
"Amy! Maria! Anthony!" A woman said from the front door. I
turned to her, it was my Aunt Angela. "I'm so glad you made
it!" She said in her thick Italian accent.
"Aunt Angela," I said. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, honey. I'm just making sure you are fine and settled in.
Io vivo proprio sulla strada successiva!" She said. She
obviously thought I understood, so I just stood there and
nodded.
"Ah, si. Ma Amy non parla italiano." Mom laughed. I felt
awkward knowing they could be saying something about me,
considering I heard my name.
"Well, come inside! The rooms are nice and big!" We followed
her into the house. The last time I saw Aunt Angela was when I
was two years ago. We never go to Italy so she always visits
us. She was 55 years old, she had a hint of gray highlights.
She was a little big, and she was shorter than me.
I went upstairs and into my new bedroom. All my furniture was
already in there. I put my bags on the floor and jumped on my
bed. I quickly unlocked my phone and FaceTimed Austin. He
answered right away.
"Wow, you're even more beautiful then I remember." He said and
winked.
"Haha, stop you act like it's been a year." I smiled.
"I know, but it feels like it."
"It feels like I'm another planet!"
"Haha. When are you gonna visit?" He asked.
"I don't know, I just got here-" There was a sudden ring at the
door bell. I heard the door open so I guess someone answered
it. "It's just so different here. I feel like I won't be able
to listen to the music we get back there. And I feel like it
won't be the same."
"Because it isn't the same."
"I know it isn't. The hard part is understanding everything-" I
was interrupted by my aunt.
"Amy! Come down here, un vicino ci sta visitando." She
yelled.
"Can I call you back?" I asked Austin.
"Sure, I love you." He blew me a kiss. I blew one back and hung
up. I ran downstairs too see a boy and a woman
greeting my parents with a large bowl of Italian gelato.
"Quindi
questa e Amy? Lei e bella! Lei e l'eta di Vincenzo, guisto?"
The woman said smiling at me.
"Si, Amy ha sedici anni. Lei non capisce l'italiano." My father
said. "Amy, this is Carmela and her son Vincenzo, our
neighbors! Vincenzo is goes to the school you go to."
"Hi." I said timidly. I looked into Vincenzo's eyes. They were
a deep blue, blue as the sky here. He was muscular and tall. He
had dark brown hair that was gelled into a tiny fohawk. He was
tan and his smile was priceless.
"Ciao, bella." He winked, grabbed my hand and gently kissed
it.
"Hello," I smiled. "You should know I don't speak
Italian though."
He smiled too, "Oh, that's alright." I adored his accent.
"Would you like to go for a walk?"
"It would be my pleasure." We walked out.
Letting Go, Holding On
Chapter
I (Part Two)
We pulled into Austin's driveway, no one
was home. I loved him with all my heart, but I wasn't ready. I
just wanted to make him happy. The break up is ruining us both.
But, I can't go to Italy knowing that we are more than 1000 miles
apart. We have been dating for over a year. I'm a junior in
California, not for long. My dad is transfering to Italy for his
architecture job. I'm always begging mother for me to stay with
grandma, of course she said no. I'm leaving tomorrow morning.
It's going to be a long day.
"Ok, so the bedroom is upstairs." He said as he lead the way. I
followed him up the stairwell into his bedroom. It was small and
barely furnished. I have never been in his room before, nor has
he been in mine. "Alright, you ready?" He said as if he had done
this before.
"I... yes." I said hesitantly. "I'm ready." He walked toward me
and started embracing me. He kissed me and wouldn't let me go. I
started to unbutton his shirt and take it off. He held me tight
in his arms. His chest was cold and soft. He started to take off
my shirt. I was scared, what if he didn't like the way I looked?
What if something went wrong? He took my shirt off and we
motioned towards the bed. As he fell onto the matress, he took me
with him. I rolled him over and started taking off his
belt. And before I knew it he started talking off my
bra...
About 30 minutes later, I was in his car ready to go home. He sat
in his seat and started backing out of the driveway. "That was
great." I said. It really was great. I loved him so much and to
top it off like that was amazing.
"I know, I just didn't want it to end." Austin's eyes started
watering. We drove down to the end of his street.
"This is so hard for me to say goodbye, I don't want to lose you.
I just don't know how things would work out. You have to
understand..."
"I do, I do. But, after all we've been through? I just can't see
you leave like this. I love you more than anything!"
"You're right, I love you too. But-"
"-Please? Long distance can work sometimes!"
"It's not the same."
"We'll make it work!"
"Okay, fine." I said as we pulled into my driveway. "Long
distance, we can make it work like you said." He leaned into kiss
me and that would probably be our last kiss...
