Chapter 51
Carson's POV:
I was miserable in the hospital. I
hated not being at school and at practice and most of all I hated
having almost no independence. But that wasn’t the worst
part. My surgery was tomorrow and I was more nervous than I had
ever been in my life. What if something went wrong? What if I
wouldn’t be able to run track in the spring? What if I
wasn’t able to run again at all? I wasn’t having such
a good day. On top of all that my parents had e-mailed my birth
mother about the accident and now 3 days later there was still no
response. I couldn’t believe that my mother didn’t
even care that I had been in an accident or that I was in the
hospital. My mom told me not to worry about it. She loves and
cares for me and that’s what makes her my real mom; those
are things my birth mother never did for me.
That afternoon my day got a lot better. Gia and Sam came to visit. They told me they wanted
to have a party when Jeremy and I were discharged. It made my day
to know that they were thinking about me. They spent a couple
hours with me planning the party but then they had to go and I
was falling asleep because I had just been given another dose of
painkillers.
Early the next morning the nurses came in and wheeled me down to
the operating room. They told me it was a simple procedure and
that I would be fine but I was still nervous. They gave me a
sedative and everything went black. The next thing I knew I woke
up back in my hospital room. I looked at the clock and realized
that I had been out for hours. I tried to sit up but my mom was
right there pushing me back down. She told me to just take it
easy for the rest of the day. Then I realized the cast. It was
huge. Like I mean entire leg cast. I looked at my mom nervously
but she said “Don’t worry your going to be fine you
only have this big cast for a couple weeks then they take it off
and put a smaller one on.” Then I fell
asleep again.
The next morning I woke up and all I wanted to do was see Jeremy.
The nurse told me I couldn’t. I had to stay in bed for 3
days to let my leg heal before I could get up and use my
crutches, which Sam had painted with a gorgeous flowery design.
That meant 3 days without Jeremy. I didn’t think I was ever
going to make it 3 days without Jeremy. My parents were trying to
be comforting but I didn’t want them, I wanted Jeremy. Just
as I was trying to get my mind around not being able to see him,
Sam and Gia came to visit again. Thank God
there were there because they took my mind off of having to stay
in bed and made me feel so much better.

Chapter 50
Sam's POV:
The school days dragged on.
Carson hadn’t returned to school yet, but Gia and I were visiting her today. Lunch time rolled
around. I grabbed a chicken sandwich for me and a turkey sandwich
for Gia. I sat down at our usual table,
waiting for Gia to return with the drinks. I
lost myself in my thoughts. I kept thinking about Zach. He had
sent me a couple of flirty texts this weekend, but I didn’t
respond. I wasn’t the type of girl that would cheat on her
boyfriend. I loved Ben so much, but there was something about
Zach that made me think about him. Then again, I barely knew
Zach. Still, I liked him. “Hello? Sam? Earth to Sam!”
Gia waved her hand in front of my face. I quickly
snapped out of my thoughts. “Oh sorry Gia.” I said, taking my water out of her hand.
“What is wrong with you today?” she asked. I bit my
lip. I hadn’t told Carson or Gia about Zach
yet. I didn’t know what they would think. “It’s
nothing.” With that Gia changed the subject. “Okay well I was
thinking that maybe we could throw Carson and Jeremy a welcome
home party!” I smiled. “That would be great! We can
ask Carson about it at the hospital.” We continued
talking until the bell rang.
The school day ended quickly. Gia and I got in
her car and drove to the hospital. We walked into Carson’s
room. “Hey Carson.” We said.
She looked up from the magazine she was reading and smiled.
“Hey guys!” “So Sam and I were thinking and we
want to throw you and Jeremy a welcome home party when you guys
are discharged.”
Carson’s eyes lit up. “That sounds great!” For
the rest of the visit we talked about party preparations. Then it
was time for us to leave. “Hey Gia, we should go
visit Jeremy.” She nodded
in agreement. We walked down the hallway until we reached
Jeremy’s room. We heard a loud voice coming from it.
“Dude it was an awesome party though. I made out with like
five chicks.”
Gia wrinkled her noise. “Ew who do you
think that is?” We listened for a little bit longer. My
body stiffened. I realized that it was Zach. God, how stupid was
I? Why did I like him? He was a pig. Not being able to stand it
anymore I walked in. “Hey Jeremy.” I said in a cheery tone.
“Hey Sam. Hey Gia.” I saw Zach look
towards us. “Hey Sam.” He said
smiling. “Oh hi Zach.” I said
coldly. He came over. “Hi. I’m Zach.” He said, flirting with
Gia. “Gia.”
She said, looking at me in confusion. The door opened and Ben
walked in. “Hey guys.” I smiled.
I walked over to him and kissed him. He saw Zach and introduced
himself. We spent about 10 minutes there when Zach had to leave.
“Nice meeting you Gia and Ben. And
it was nice seeing you again Sam.” He said. I just nodded at him.
Zach gave me a sly smile and left. “Did you know that
guy?” Ben asked as we left. I shook my head.
“He’s definitely not important." I said as I took his
hand. At that moment, everything just felt
right.

Chapter 49
Gia's POV:
The next morning I woke
up to my alarm clock. Great, school. My hangover was
practically gone but the day would be tough knowing Carson
was in the hospital while we were all at school. I dragged
myself out of bed and french braided my long hair. I put on my ugly
plaid skirt and sweater vest and ran out the door; ignoring my
parents.
I walked myself over to Sam's locker.
"Did you hear about Carson's surgery?" I
asked. She nodded her head, "Yeah, it's too bad.
Imagine no sports for awhile." I took a sip of my
coffee, "I know. It's crazy. Carson without sports is
like Justin Bieber without hair." She laughed,
"How's your hangover?" she asked with concern.
"It's better, thanks." The bell rang and we were
off to homeroom.
Math rolled around and I was so nervous. I looked over at my
teacher's desk. The same desk I was at a few nights before
changing my failing grade to a passing grade. "Report cards
were mailed today!" she said with a huge smile on her
face. My heart started to pound quicker,
but she totally dropped the subject. Maybe she
didn't find out. It was the end of class and I was
relieved. But as soon as I was walking out the door
she called my name, "Gia, may I see you
for a second?" Oh God, she found out. Hello being
grounded for life; goodbye college. "Gia, you're grades have improved a lot." Oh
no, she did realize. "I'm so proud of you." I
titled my head, I was so confused. She was proud of me for
changing me grade? "Gia you were
failing but your recent tests brought your average up to an
83!" she squealed in delight. "Oh, wow!" I said
faking me enthusiasm. She congratulated me again and I was
off to my next class. I felt so guilty, but hey it
worked.
That day when I got home from school Drew visited me. "Hey
what are you doing here?" I asked while he gave me
a hello kiss. "I don't have a lot of homework tonight
and I wanted to see you." he smiled. We went
upstairs to my room. "You play guitar?" he asked while
looking through my room. "Kind of." I shrugged.
"Play for me." he smiled while sitting
on my bed. "No, I'm not very
good." He handed me my guitar, "For me?"
I giggled, "Okay." I've never played or
sang in front of anyone before but I felt like I could trust
Drew. I plucked the first few notes of For the First Time by
the Script and started to sing along. After I finished he stared
at me in amazement, "Gia, you're
really good." I blushed, "Nah, it's just a
stupid hobby." I admitted. "Honestly, you're
amazing. We should totally jam sometime." he joked. He kept
complimenting me before he had to go. He kissed me slowly and
then left. I quickly ran down to my parents liquor cabinet
and drank some wine before they came home. i wasn't addicted
or anything; I just needed to relax. There's been a lot of
stress with me changing my grades, my parents, Carson in the
hospital, Drew and just everything. I took one last sip and
threw the empty glass in the sink. I wasn't becoming an
alcoholic; was I?

Chapter 48
Carson's POV:
I woke up and looked around. It
took a second for me to realize that I was in the hospital, that
my head was pounding because I had hit it pretty badly last night
and most of all that I had been in a car crash last night. I felt
myself drifting in and out of sleep. The nurse said I was doing
fine and it was normal because I was on so many painkillers. Sam
and Gia came
and visited in the morning. I wanted them to stay all day because
it made me feel like I was more at home but after a while they
had to leave. I wanted to go next door to see Jeremy and see for
myself that he was ok but the doctors told me that I had to stay
in my room.
The doctor came in again in the afternoon. “How long and I
going to have to stay here” I asked. All I could think
about was the basketball season and how if I didn’t get out
of the hospital soon there was no way I was going to keep my spot
as captain. “Well at least 3 more days so we can make sure
there’s no brain damage from your concussion and in a
little bit we’re going to have to take some more x-rays of
your ankle to see if you need surgery.” The doctor answered. I
was thinking to myself Oh no not surgery. A broken ankle was
already hard enough to recover from in time for at least some of
basketball but surgery. That wasn’t an option because with
surgery I might not even recover in time for spring track. I
think the doctor saw my face go pale at the word surgery because
he said, “Don’t worry about surgery. We have great
doctors so you’re going to be fine.”
Soon after the doctor left a nurse came and helped me into a
wheelchair. I hated it, I felt so helpless. She rolled me into
the elevator to go down and take x-rays. The whole time all I
could do was hope that it was ok. The she wheeled me back up to
my room. Before I got to my door I said “Since I’m
already out of my room, can I visit my friend who was in the car
with me last night.” “Sure” she said “Just
don’t tell the doctor I let you do this.”
It was the highlight of my entire day getting to see Jeremy. I
felt awful when I saw him though. His face was all scratched and
he had a cast on his arm. I felt like it was my fault the two of
us were in the hospital. “Don’t worry” he
reassured me “It’s not your fault. The drunk driver
hit you. There was nothing you could do to avoid
it.” I stayed with Jeremy for about an hour but
it was too short. The nurse came in and told me that I had to go
back to my room.
My parents were waiting in my room for me. They looked really
serious. “We have something to tell you honey” my mom
said. “What is it?” I asked. “The doctors
looked at your x-rays and your entire ankle bone is shattered.
You are going to need surgery to repair it.” What no. It
wasn’t true. I just laid there and tried to make myself
believe it was all a joke.

Chapter 47
Sam's POV:
I drove to the hospital as soon as I could. I knew Gia probably
wouldn’t be aware of what was happening so I left her a
voicemail explaining the details. I drove as fast as I could to
the hospital. I took the elevator up to the third floor and
walked to Carson’s room. I was a wreck. I was so nervous to
see if she was ok. “Excuse me.” I heard someone call
after me. I turned around and I saw a guy around my age standing
behind. “You dropped your phone.” He said.
“Thanks.” I mumbled. He frowned. “Are you
okay?” “My friend was in a car accident.” I
said. He nodded. “Mine was too.” I looked confused.
“Really?” I asked. “Yeah. I guess it was pretty
bad but he’s going to be ok. I should probably go see
him.” I sighed. “Yeah I should go see my
friend.” I couldn’t put this off much longer. We said
goodbye. That guy was really cute, I thought. But wait I have a
boyfriend. I shook him out of my mind and visited Carson. I
walked in and saw lots of balloons and gift baskets. “Hey
Carson.” I said. Carson smiled. “Hey Sam. Thanks for
visiting.” I nodded, looking around at all of the equipment
surrounding her bed. “Don’t worry Sam. It’s
nothing serious. I just have to stay off my ankle for a couple
weeks.” I smiled. “That’s a relief.” I
said. “So I have to tell you something. Jeremy and I
kissed.” Carson said. “Oh my gosh that’s great!
Finally!” I exclaimed. “Finally?” She asked. I
laughed. “Jeremy has been in love with you for such a long
time.” Carson told me all about the kiss. After that I
decided it was time to visit Jeremy. I waved goodbye to Carson
and walked out the door. I walked into Jeremy’s room and
said hi. They guy who I had met in the hallway was in there.
“Ummm hi again.” I said. He looked over at me.
“Hi. What are you doing here?” He asked.
“Jeremy was in the car accident with my friend. Why are you
here?” I asked. “Well isn’t it obvious?
I’m visiting my friend who was in the car crash.” I
rolled my eyes. “Yeah I know that, but I’ve never
seen you around before.” “Jeremy and I have been
friends since we were in 3rd grade. I go to Ferris
Public School.” He said. Ferris. The public school I would
be going to if I hadn’t gotten a scholarship. “Oh
that’s cool. I’m Sam by the way.” I shook his
hand. “Zach. So maybe I’ll see you around.” He
said. I nodded. “Uh yeah definitely.” He walked out
the door. My feelings for Zach and Ben were getting jumbled
around. I left the room to clear my head.

Chapter 45
Carson's POV:
If someone had asked me what I
thought about Jeremy before the Ball I would have said that he is
just a friend, but now my answer has completely changed. I loved
him. I don’t know how I could have ever had feelings for
Josh when there was Jeremy I could be with. He was sweet, funny,
cute, athletic, everything I wanted to see in a guy.
After the dance, Josh and I got into my car. We were going to go
to the after party, but Jeremy said he was tired and I had gotten
a text from Sam saying that she was worried about
Gia, so we
just decided to go to Sam’s house instead. It was really
snowy out. I don’t think I had ever driven in weather like
that. I could barely see the road in front of me. The weather was
bad and Sam lived kind of far away so I decided to take the back
roads to avoid other traffic. I was really careful and after
about 5 minutes it stopped snowing. I was enjoying my alone time
with Jeremy. He was being really flirty and cute and I
wasn’t hesitating to flirt right back. We stopped at a
stoplight and he reached over and kissed me. It was the best kiss
I had ever had.
We had just about made it to Sam’s house when I saw
headlights coming towards me. I tried to get out of the way but
in that split second there was not much I could do. Time seemed
to slow down. The other car had hit us and we were spinning.
Jeremy looked at me and said “I love you” I said
“I love you too.” Then everything went black. The next
thing I remember is waking up in the ambulance. My head was
pounding and there was a sharp pain in my leg. I looked around
for Jeremy but he wasn’t there. “Where’s
Jeremy” I said to the paramedic. “In the other
ambulance. Don’t worry honey, He’s going to be fine,
so are you. Now just lay down we are almost to the
hospital.” Everything went black again.
The next time I woke up I was in the Hospital. My mom and dad
were there. They told me that I had been hit by a drunk driver,
that I had hit my head and gotten a concussion an that I had
broken my left ankle. “How long am I going to be
here” I asked. “We don’t know. The doctor said
the bone in your ankle is shattered and we don’t know if
you’re going to need surgery on it or not. I asked ho
Jeremy was and they said that he broke his arm and hit his head
but that he would be ok too. The drugs they were giving me were
making me tired, so I went to sleep, feeling a lot better because
I knew Jeremy was ok.

Chapter 44
Sam's POV:
We were are all having a great time at the
dance. I looked over at Carson and Jeremy. They were dancing
together and laughing. I smiled. It looked like maybe there
would be a new couple. Ben and I were dancing when Gia came up
to me. She asked me if she could have a ride home and I said
sure. Her eyes were glassy and her speech was slurred. I pulled
Gia aside. "Gia, have you been drinking?" She just stared at me
and laughed. "What? What are you talking about?" I just stared
at her. I could smell the alcohol on her breath. "Whatever Gia.
I know you have been drinking. Just stop okay? You might do
something you will regret." I walked away from her and returned
to Ben. "Is she okay?" Ben asked. "Yeah she's fine. Drew will
help her out. We kept dancing. It was truly a magical
evening. The ball ended and everyone started to shuffle out.
Ben, Gia, and I got into Ben's car. "Jeremy, Carson. Do you
guys need a ride?" Ben called to them. Jeremy said "No it's
okay. We will meet you at the after party." Ben nodded and got
into the car. "Okay let's drop Gia off at her house first and
then we can go to the after party." I looked in the backseat at
Gia. She was covered and sweat and looked like she was going to
throw up. "Is it okay if I skip the after party?" I asked. "I
can't let Gia go home like this. Her parents will kill her. She
can sleep over at my house." Ben nodded. "Oay that sounds
good." he said. Ben pulled up to my house. I got out of the car
and gingerly helped Gia out of the backseat. "Do you heed any
help?" Ben asked. "That's sweet of you to ask but just go to
the party and have fun." He smiled. "Okay babe. I will call you
tomorrow." We kissed. Ben drove away. I turned around and found
Gia lying in the snow. I helped her up and we slowly walked
into my house. I knew tonight was going to be a long
night.
