homerun
part #104
after that we
laid our towels down, and we put our sunscreen on. all the
guys went in the water, and we just laid out to let the sunscreen
dry.
"so dev, what are you gonna do for pat's birthday next
week?" alyssa asked me.
"i got him plain white tee's tickets. i'm going to take him
to dinner and then surprise him with them." i said.
"awh that's so cute. and i heard how he asked you to
homecoming." alyssa squeaked.
"yea. i wasn't expecting it. he asked me when we first
started going out, but i thought it still applied. i'm not
used to being treated like this. he cares so
much."
"well, last time you were treated like this was with
dalton." she reminded me. i sat up from laying on my
back to see her laying on her back right next to me. i just
glared at her. she looked at me through her sunglasses.
"what?"
"we don't like to talk about him." blake answered
for me.
"about who?" came a voice i would know anywhere.
"pat doesn't like to either." i whispered. "no
one." i called out. he came down and sat next to me on
my towel. his hair was all shaken out. i ruffled it a
little.
"does the water feel good?" i asked.
"amazing." he said. our eyes locked for a moment,
and i couldn't release the hold he had. "you should
come in." he suggested.
"really? i think i might. i'm getting really
hot." i said. "you guys wanna come?" i
offered.
"no thanks."
"nah, you two go have fun." blake said. she
smiled, as pat helped me up and we walked toward the ocean.
"dev, can i ask you a question without you getting
mad?" he asked
"of course, i wouldn't get mad. shoot."
"blake still watches everything i do.
everything. why? i mean what's her deal? does she like me?
like did i do anything wrong?" he asked, and he went
off. i stopped at the water line.
"no." i said, shaking my head. "it's not
what you did. it's not what you did at all." i
began.
"then why?" he asked.
"well, i've just had a history of getting my heart broken, i
guess. and she just feels like she needs to protect me from
that. because i can't count how many times i've shown up on
her doorstep, crying." i said, and looked away.
"devon. you know i will never hurt you. i
swear." he said.
"i know. she's just paranoid. because with dalton,
" i studdered his name out. "i was horrible. i
stayed at her house for days, just crying. it was the worst
pain she's seen me in." i said, i looked at him, and he
looked away. he looked pained from thinking about it.
"but it's okay, let's go in the water." i said, and
pulled at his hand. i reached my foot out to take a step,
and as soon as my foot hit the ground, i collapsed, and
everything went black.
