homerun
part #105
(pat's perspective)
i grabbed devon's hand to walk
towards the water, and then she started pulling me down.
"dev?" i asked. and looked down to see her on the
ground, jerking.
"oh no. devon don't do this." i said to
her. but she was past hearing me now. she looked
exactly like erin did, laying there on the ground, jerking.
she was making noises, but not consciously. having learned
the basic first-aid for a seizure when erin had one, i rolled her
on her left side, and started counting. ray looked at me,
and then he looked down and saw devon on the ground.
"ray, come here and help me!" i shouted, but he was
already on his way. it was already at one minute.
after 5, i was supposed to call an ambulence.
"dude, what happened?" ray asked, out of breath.
"she's having a seizure." i said, and stared at her
helplessly. i couldn't touch her, that wasn't the thing to
do, because i could get hurt, or worse, potentially hurt
her. i continued to count, and was at 2
minutes.
"ray, go get blake and
alyssa." i said.
"too late, they're
already coming over." he said. i turned to see the two
of them sprinting over to us.
"what happened?"
blake shouted.
"she's having a
seizure." i answered. "we're already at 3
minutes."
"after 5 we have to call
an ambulence." alyssa said.
"i know that." i
answered. "someone go get a lifeguard. they are
probably the first people who can get one." i said,
and ray ran over to the stand, and two came running over.
they were a guy and a girl. typical life guard guy, tan,
somewhat buff. not close to me, but he was up there. the girl was
short, and petite. she was unnaturally blonde.
"what
happened?" she asked.
"my girlfriend's having a
seizure." i said. panicked.
"how long?" the dude
asked.
"it's been 5 minutes
now." i said. "please get an ambulence here,
now?" i asked.
"sure." he said, and
she was already on her walkie talkie.
"911" she
said. i heard the roar of an engine within seconds, and
there was a huge truck with a woman in her late twenties jumping
out.
"what happened?" she
asked. another guy was running after her with a kit.
he looked about 30.
"how long?" he
asked.
"about 5:23 now." i
said.
"alright, back up."
he said, and he had a needle in his hand.
"what are you doing with
that?" ray asked.
"he's giving it to her to
calm the signals her brain is sending to the rest of her
body." as soon as she said that, he stuck the long
needle down her neck, and she started to slow.
"we should get her to a
hospital." he said, and he ran back to get a
stretcher. he pulled it out, and lowered it to the ground
for her. the girl took the neck stabilizer and wrapped it
around her neck. the guy brought out a board.
"can you help?" he
asked me.
"she's not that heavy,
but sure." i said. on 3, we lifted her over to the
board, and they strapped her up nice and tight, and wheeled it
over to the truck.
"we need someone to come,
can you?" the woman asked.
"i will." i
volunteered, and turned around.
"i'll come." blake
said quietly.
"are you sure?"
alyssa asked.
"yea. i'll keep you
posted. tell chris, okay?" blake said.
"yea, okay." alyssa
said, and we walked over to the truck and got in the back.
the woman got in the driver's seat, and the guy was in the back
watching devon.
"where's the nearest
hospital?" i asked.
"its 2 blocks north of
here." she answered. we got off the beach, and were on
the road. i turned around to look how devon was
doing. she was still unconcious. i was getting really
nervous, and when i looked down, blake was wiping her
eyes.
"what's wrong?" i
asked.
"that was her first
seizure over 5 minutes. pat, i don't know what they're
going to do to her." she said, and wiped her eyes
again.
"i don't either." i
said, and she gave me a weird look.
"my sister has the same
thing." i said coldly.
"oh, i'm sorry." she
said, and turned her head, and wiped her tears again.
"listen, sorry i'm just
really scared. i know you don't want to lose her, and i
sure as hell don't want to lose her. i just want her to be
okay." i said, and offered an arm. she leaned in
and i hugged her.
"we just have to hope everything's okay." i said, and
she nodded her head, and sniffled.
