ZOE BELL PART 42

His head was above mine, so I had to look up at him to see into his big blue eyes. They were the same as his human ones, and I loved them. He laid his head on my shoulder and I brought my hands up to touch his fur coat. It was like silk to the touch. So soft and slick, I ran my fingers through it and giggled when he quietly barked.
"You like that?" I asked him.
His big head nodded and I continued stroking his fur.
"Is this why your favorite color is silver?"
His eyebrows raised and he nodded again. "Do you like being a wolf?"
His massive shoulders shrugged and I wondered how I could have mistaken him for a dog before. He was just so huge! Out of the corner of my eye I seen three other wolves approach us. I studied them and wondered if I could figure out who they were. I assumed they were Alex, Cliff, and Zane, and they all blurred a little in my vision and became those three people after I blinked. Mason was also himself again.
"Isn’t that cool Zo?" Alex asked. He ran up to me and swung me around in a circle.
"Were you scared?" Cliff asked.
"No, that was way cool. I’ve never had pets before! Now I have four!" I joked.
"Well that’s why we never had pets. Animals don’t really like us. They stay away from us because they think of us as threats." That was Zane and his monotone voice made my smile dim.
"Oh. I’m sorry." I knew he’s always wished he could have animals. I always thought it was because of my parents saying no, but I guess if they knew about them then they already had two wolves.
"Well we’re gonna go back. We just felt that Mason shifted so we came to see what was up. See you later." They all blurred again and ran off in their wolf forms.
"That was really cool."
"You weren’t scared?" Mason asked. His arms snaked around my waist and he pulled me closer.
I shook my head. "You were being nice though. I’m sure if you were growling at me or something I might have felt a little nerved. You were amazing."
He smiled and kissed me. His lips were warm and I wondered if his teeth felt sharper because of his wolf parts. Either way my lower lip still tingled pleasantly when he gently bit it. He pulled me back to our table to finish our food and I had lots of questions to ask.
"So does Stephenie Meyer know about you guys?"
He shrugged. "That’s a mystery we’ve yet to solve. If she does know, then it’s another reason to keep everything as quiet as possible. I’m holding you to your word that you won’t tell anyone about this. We don’t even want to imagine what could happen to us if the outside world really knew the truth behind all the vampire and werewolf stories."
"So vampires are real too?"
"Yeah. We’re not death enemies like stories say we are though. We keep to ourselves mostly, but the ones that showed up today kind of want some things from us so they’re the only ones that really bother us. There was a war about three hundred years ago between vampires and werewolves that lead to a tie and I truce. We leave each other alone as much as possible."
We finished our salads and walked back to Mason’s truck together. I loved his truck. It was a raised silver 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. "Is your truck silver because of your fur coat?" I asked.
"Yes. A lot of my things are silver because of my fur. Haven’t you noticed that most of Zagger and Zane’s things chocolate brown?"
"I didn’t know their coats were chocolate brown. But yeah, they have lots of brown things in their rooms. Only their cars aren’t brown."
"Different preferences I guess. Do you have an opposition against silver?"
"No, I told you yesterday that I thought silver and pink went great together. Don’t you remember?"
He opened my door for me and helped me hop into it. "Of course I do. I think they go great together as well."
He went around to his side and jumped in and started the car. I moved over to the middle seat and held his hand while he drove me home. We were quiet, but it was comfortable. I was thinking about how awesome it was that I had a werewolf boyfriend, and I assumed he was thinking about things too. I didn’t ask, so I didn’t worry about it.
Five minutes later we pulled into my driveway. The garage door was open and my parents’ car was gone. Sweet, house to ourselves tonight! Zane came out and shut the door and ran around the back of the house. That was weird. Whatever, Mason and I could chill inside.
"Wanna come in with me?" I asked him.
"Don’t you have homework to do?"
I made a face. "Yes, but you can still be with me, can’t you?"
"Good thing I have my backpack in here." He reached around me to the back seat and grabbed his bag and then pulled me out of the truck on his side.
We went inside and I pulled him up to my bedroom. I was about to shut the door when he pushed it wide
open. "Just in case your parents come home before I leave."
"Won’t you be able to hear them?" I pulled him to my couch and pushed all my stuffed animals to one corner so we had room to sit and work.
"Yes, but I don’t want you to get in trouble." He kissed my nose and pulled some books out of his bag. I sighed and grabbed my bag and laptop off my desk.
I sat down next to him and his left arm went around my shoulders without him even looking up from the paper he was reading. I smiled to myself and turned my laptop on so I could finish a paper I was supposed to be writing.
